LO3 - Evaluation

Weekly blog updates are required, as with every unit. Please remember to
take photos/screenshots as you film/edit. You might find it easier if you note
down a record of what you did each day in a diary form.

Please use the following guidance to help you with each week.

LO1 This learning objective was researching examples of your specialism in

practice
What have I have to produce three 2 minute productions over the next few weeks, one
you been product is focused on a radio show, and the other is based on a short
asked to highlight show whilst for the third I have to make a studio based show. The
brief states to “include details on the conventions of your specialism”.
do?
How has By conducting both primary and secondary research I now have a better
researching understanding of my specialism, for example I looked at how the likes of
key Match of the Day and Sky Sports news analyse football highlights. I took an
in depth look at how professional programmes analyse key events that

Here you can see my analysis, I spoke about the camera angles and how
they portray power between the 2 cricketers at the crease as the camera
angle switches between the power and the batsman.

I also spoke about how TV rights dictate the start time of most modern day
key events like the FA Cup final, most key premiere league matches and
other wide national events
Did you Overall, I did not encounter any problems when analysing the videos for my
encounter specialism, the only minor hindrance I came across was that I could not
any think of points to cover all of elements such as camera angles and lighting.
In addition, as I was working against time, I had to make sure the work I
problems
produced was relevant to my genre and that I avoided waffling. Similarly, I
when trying also had to make sure my work was coherent so when it came to marking it
to analyse is easy for the marker to understand what I’m talking about

What have To help me overcome these issues, I asked my teacher for help. This was
you done to obviously a benefit as they gave me points which I could talk about in
overcome depth, similarly, I had slight issues with infographics as I wasn’t sure how I
was meant to analyse my survey monkey results. For example, I was unsure
these issues?
If I had to produce an aesthetically pleasing infographic that included
images and diagrams or if I was required to. I also tried to sustain my
research over the weeks we had to complete the unit as this allowed me to
go in depth and talk about a wider range of issues over a longer period.

What will From the research taken, I will implement a range of different camera
you angles into my productions, especially when it comes to the two-minute

High Grade Tips

Look to use these terms in order to improve the analysis of your own work.

Relevant and coherent – make sure your research sources are not just the same as the
media product you hope to make and talk about how they inform your planning.
Sustained – continue your research throughout the 4 week project and don’t just limit
yourself.
Efficient production against timescales – how is your planning helping you to meet your
deadline.

LO2 For this learning objective you worked on planning and production

What did you From thoroughly planning my productions I learnt an array of

learn from your conventions regarding my specialism, I learnt how sports shows are
planning? aired and delivered on radio as well as improving my camera and
presentation skills in my studio highlight show. To continue, in my first
production I produced a two minute highlight show, similar to the
sports show, ‘Match of the Day’ I used my two fellow colleagues Joe
Maine and Conor Coleman, thanks to my research I learnt about the
mise-en-scene of the highlight show. So acting upon this, I dressed
appropriately in a shirt and smart jeans as did my accomplices.
As you can see by the screenshot above, due to careful planning we
are conforming to the genre of a football highlight show. Furthermore, I
also looked at the minor details of a football highlight set, I noticed that
professional shows have props like a table and water, so I acted on this
and followed suit. As you can see by the screenshot below this football
talk show uses similar props to me (newspaper and drinks) by doing this
I also feel my show comes across as less formal and gives the audience
an idea of what to expect.

For my radio show, I looked at YouTube clips of how the presenters and
there guests talk to one another, I picked up on the tone of voice and
register in my planning so when it came to recording I knew exactly
how I was going to speak and so did Joe who acted as the angry fan. I
opted to use a less formal tone than the approach I adopted in the
studio highlight show as I felt it was important to diverge down to the
tone of my guest.

How will this be As my production process continues my planning will play a vital part
useful as your in, not only my future productions within CMP but any future
production productions I will undertake at university or beyond. From learning
about the codes and conventions of my chosen specialism I now have
process
a better understanding of the different genres within sports
continues? broadcasting like radio and TV. I also developed my understanding on
an array of sports like the NFL and cricket as I looked at them in my
research. Furthermore, I found statistics about football, NFL and cricket
as I may have needed them in my productions as well as further my
knowledge on the three sports, I also looked at how the sports were
conveyed on TV through the use of different camera angles, lighting
and editing styles.
As you can see by this camera angle, the viewer gets a full idea of what is
going on, the low angle gives me the impression that the production editords
want you to be in the fielders posistion as this low angle is suggesting. This
camera angle also enables the watchers to see the emotion of the two
fielders standing up.
In comparison, I found that NFL uses much more high angle shots (like the
one below)

This may be because of the shear number of players concentrated in one

posistion on the pitch at any given time thus meaning that a high angle shot
is the most apporpriate to use. From looking at multiple NFL highlights, I also
noted that many close up shots are used this is done to allow the audience
to feel the pain of superstars.
To sum up, by looking extensively at an array of sports in my planning, I now
have a much better understanding of how camera angles are used to portray
the narrative
What Throughout the course of this unit, I learned a lot about sub-genres
genres/formats within sports broadcasting. I focused my productions on two different
have you areas, TV and radio. I produce a two-minute radio talk show similar to
chosen and what you see on Saturday evenings after the matches have finished.
why? For my other production, I opted to create a two-minute highlight show
based on Match of the Day. Throughout the course of this unit, I learnt
many new skills such as implementing a green screen onto premiere
pro, using the ‘ultra-key’ effect and editing an audio only production
on audacity.

Due to me challenging myself I learnt many new things about both

premiere pro and the general conventions of sport
How much work In truth, I only completed a small amount of work outside of the lessons
did you and this ultimately jeopardised my final production as I didn’t get one
complete production done, however there was external factors that prevented
this, like the adverse weather conditions which prevented myself and
outside of the
Conor from filming the football game. Nevertheless, myself and Conor
lessons? should have planned our final production a bit better and allowed
ourselves more time thus meaning we would have completed it within
allowed time. Moreover, for the first two productions I completed a
vast amount of work outside of the lesson time, including the
productions themselves. Looking back, I’m highly disappointed that I
failed to complete my third production as this doesn’t look on me but
the two productions I did complete were a high enough quality to
make me pass the unit.
What issues did I did encounter a couple problems in my planning, especially as I and
you encounter Conor were never sure about what day we were filming our
whilst planning production. It is fair to say that if we allowed more time for this
production and planned a bit better we would have definitely
and how did you
completed the production. Another issue that I came across was my
overcome storyboards weren’t completed at the first time of asking, I had to
them? make allowances to my studio highlight show as I couldn’t use some of
the camera angles in my storyboard.
How did you find I found the filming and editing process a challenge but it was a new
the filming and learning curve nonetheless. I learnt multiple new skills when editing my
editing process? studio highlight show, I learnt how to use the ultra key, which is a tool
that enables you to colour out the green screen which allows you to
add footage of your choice in the background. (Like shown below)
With regards to my radio show, I managed to edit this very quickly as it
only took one take. Overall, it only took myself and Joe 15 minutes to
record the show. Editing the audio was very easy, I used premiere pro
to edit, I could have used audacity, and however I felt more
comfortable using a programme that I am familiar with.

Did you Well firstly, I only encountered one problem when filming, as touched
encounter any upon already, I couldn’t use the camera angles I first hoped when
problems during filming my studio highlight show but this wasn’t too much of an issue as
I just used different camera angles (see below) which in fact looked
filming/editing?
relatively good after I edited the production especially with the green
How did you screen added in the background. Furthermore, the rest of the editing
overcome process went smoothly, I used the ultra key in appropriate places. In
them? terms of the filming process, I had to get my teachers, Sarah and
Adam to help me set up the cameras in the studio as I wasn’t sure
how.
My radio show sounds professional, both myself and Joe used specific
terminology to help boost the quality of the production, this production
was fairly straight forward as I just had to speak into a microphone then
save it to my memory stick. As touched upon already editing my
production was easy as it was done in one take with not many
hiccups.

How do you feel How close have you come to creating a professional
your product standard production?
compares to
I think that both of my productions are of a fairly high
existing
quality especially the studio highlight show. The only
professional

element I don’t like about this production is that the sound
is quite unclear in some parts of the production. To rectify
this I could have used the sound picked up from one
microphone throughout instead of using the sound from
each individual clip. However, this is very time consuming
and as I had a tight deadline I don’t think I would have
submitted the production in time
Have you effectively matched the codes and conventions
which you found during your analysis? Were there any
times when this was difficult?
I matched the codes and conventions throughout my
production, I made sure I did. I used specific camera
angles and terminology when needed, even more so in
my radio show. Overall, I wouldn’t say there were too
many times when I struggled to include generic
conventions as I know my topic very well.
Is your production appropriate for the intended audience?
Yes, I would say my product is appropriate for my
intended audience, by conforming to the codes and
conventions of my genre this allowed me to obtain a
better understanding of what I needed to include in my
production
Are there any areas where you production falls short? Be
specific. How would you improve next time?
I think my production falls short in the sound department,
I feel that in some parts of my studio highlight show, the
sound was rather unclear due to a small background
noise picked up on one of the camera microphones, so to
improve my production quality next time I will allow more
time to edit as then I can tune the fine details of sound. If
I had more time, I would have used the sound recording
from just one of the microphones as this would have
meant the sound waves would have been constant
throughout. This however, would have been more time
consuming and matching the sound from one camera
microphone to the frame from the other camera would
have taken a lot of time.
