Activity 06: Mapping Population, Number of Voters


and Population and Voter Densities

Objective:

 To learn how to map population and number of voters as well as population and
voter density of Southern Leyte municipalities.

Open QGIS.

Open Project Act05_R08_SL_Munis.qgs that you saved from previous exercise.

Note the coordinate notations in geographic coordinates in degrees (i.e. lat/long).

Let’s revert to the previously set projection, which is WGS4 / UTM zone 51N. Click on EPSG:
4326

Open the attribute table of SL_Munis_Join. Click ‘Field Calculator’ tool. Create a new field.

Click OK.

For now let’s save the project as Act06_SL_Munis_Popn.qgs. Save in C:\.....\OUTPUT\PROJECT

Apply Scale Rendering to Labels of Mun_Name

Open the Layer Properties of SL_Munis_Join

Labels > Rendering: Maximum 900000

Click Apply. Click OK.

Reduce the Scale to 1:900,001. Observe what happens to the town labels.

Increase the Scale to 1:899,999. Observe what happens to the town labels.

Mapping Population

Open the Layer Properties of SK_Munis_Join

Click Classify.

Click Apply. Click OK.

On the Layers Panel, right-click SL_Munis_Join > Zoom to Layer.

For now let’s save our project as Act06_SL_Munis_Popn.qgs. Save in


C:\….\OUTPUT\PROJECT\

Add two-line labels: Town name and population values.

Open Layer Properties of SL_Munis_Join again.

Click the ‘Labels’ tab.

Click ‘Expression dialog’ tool to open its window. Encode the expression shown in the
Expression box.

Click Apply. Click OK.

Categorize population values into 4 classes

Click Apply. Click OK.

Click Apply. Click OK.

Mapping Population Density

Open the attribute table of SL_Munis_Join.

Create a new field using a field calculator and name it as POPDEN_GIS (= Population divided by
the hectarage based on GIS-calculated data).

Also, VOTDEN_GIS (= Voter population divided by the hectarage based on GIS-calculated data).

At this point let’s save project as Act06_SL_Munis_Dens.qgs. Save in


C:\……\OUTPUT\PROJECT\

Click Save. Click Edit (to close Editing mode).

Open and fill out the Layer Properties of SK_Munis_Join, as shown below:

Click Apply. Click OK.

Click Apply. Click Labels tab.

Click OK.

At this point let’s save the project as Act06_SL_Munis_Dens.qgs. Save in


C:\…..\OUTPUT\PROJECT\

EXTRA CHALLENGE

1. Map voter density. Add buffer to the labels. Save project as Act06_SK_VotDens.qgs. Save in
C:\…..\OUTPUT\PROJECT\.
2. Map population density into 4 classes. Add buffer to the labels. Save project as
ACT06_SK_Munis_PopDens4CL.qgs. Save in C:\…..\OUTPUT\PROJECT\
3. Map voter density into 4 classes. Add buffer to the labels. Save project as
ACT06_SK_Munis_VotDens4CL.qgs. Save in C:\…..\OUTPUT\PROJECT\
