Disasters have made a big impact by destroying different

infrastructure and lives of people. It is evident that there is
a lack of knowledge and strategy on implementing disaster
management that could alleviate its devastating effects.
Furthermore, is the lack of application on being prepared in
DLSU Research Congress 2014 De La 2014 an upcoming disaster. There is a new strategy that can help
Salle University, Manila, Philippines increase knowledge and application when it comes to
disasters, which is the concept of gamification, which is the
implementation of game elements such as quests,
leaderboards, trophies and ribbons that would be
implemented in a non-game platform.
Assessment of a disaster risk reduction management plan
for each school is of paramount importance as it is the first
step in risk reduction and management. In this regard, the
authors developed a seismic evacuation safety index to
quantify a school’s safety in terms of means of egress,
disaster preparedness and disaster response. This tool could
aid school administrators, disaster management groups, the
Department of Education (DepEd) and other stakeholders in
identifying risks and evaluating the school’s evacuation and
disaster management program. This will also serve as a
basis for evacuation planning and decision making.
Furthermore this study can be used to classify schools
according to their level of evacuation safety.

Salle University, Manila, Philippines 2017

Risk assessment is the first step in making schools safer

against seismic hazards like ground
shaking, liquefaction, tsunami and landslide. It is important
that such risk assessments involve the
primary stakeholders such as school administrators and
officials, but the tools utilized by the agency
responsible for such assessments, the Department of Public
Works and Highways (DPWH) are
limited to screeners with a good background of
engineering. Employing a semi-quantitative risk
assessment that assesses qualitatively the school building’s
assets, seismic hazards and
vulnerabilities to the various hazards would allow the
school administration and staff to participate
in the decision-making process. A seismic risk index, defined
as the product of these three factors
categorizes the school buildings to be at low risk, medium
risk or high risk to a specific seismic
hazard. Through the computed indices, the school buildings
in a specific compound are ranked and
prioritized for further detailed inspections and possible
repair or retrofitting. Mitigation procedures
are recommended based on the identified vulnerabilities to
reduce the risk. This paper presents the
DLSU Research Congress 2013 De La conceptual framework of the research and the semi-
Salle University, Manila, Philippines 2013 quantitative risk assessment methodology.

"OF THE 37 SCHOOLS COVERED IN THE STUDY, MOST
(59%) OF THEM CAME FROM THE NATIONAL CAPITAL
REGION AND MOST OF THEM WERE ELEMENTARY
SCHOOLS. THIRTY FIVE SCHOOLS (95%) REPORTED TO
HAVE FORMED DISASTER COMMITTEES. HOWEVER, LESS
THAN ONE THIRD (30%) OF THE RESPONDENT SCHOOLS
HAD DISASTER PREPAREDNESS PLANS. THE MAJORITY
(95%) OF THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS CONDUCTED DRILLS
ONCE A YEAR. FIRE AND EARTHQUAKE DRILLS WERE THE
MOST COMMON TYPE OF DRILL CONDUCTED IN THESE
SCHOOLS."
> it can be used as a great reference for our study since it has
a lot of data concerning the preparedness and the schools'
plans when a disaster occurs.

" In addition,
people within the community have lack of interest
and motivation in disaster mitigation and
preparedness with the implemented system, people
could gain motivation and interest to do disaster
mitigation and preparedness activities within the
community."

> it is interesting how gamification can be a massive help in giving motivation and
interest towards a certain community in conducting disaster preparedness activities.
this will be very helpful when considering the factors that can affect the
implementation of the preparedness plans.

"The ESI was used to evaluate

thirty eight (38) public schools in Baguio….Generally, the level of evacuation
safety of the public schools in Baguio City is
satisfactory based from the results"

> it is shown that the evacuation safety of the public schools in Baguio City is
satisfactory, and we might arrive at the same conclusion in the future.
