Rippenschal

Charted pattern for an easy-knit scarf, perfect to use some suitable yarn from
stash or to treat yourself with a luxury yarn comforting your skin.
Materials for scarf shown:
4 skeins of Atelier Zitron Nimbus, col. 413 (great shade of very dark taupe
other than picture is showing), 100% organic merino wool, 109yds/50g, knitting
needles 6mm (US 10, old UK 4)
Size: 15 x 200 cm, based on 40sts Chart
Gauge is not critical. Try to get a knitted texture that makes you feel
comfortable by its smooth drape.

Annotations:
Provided charts show two alternate widths , one of 40sts cast on, one for 60sts.
Choice depends on yarn used and size wanted.
Choose one and cast on, work 2-4 inches of k1/p1 ribbing, slipping selvedge
stitches on RS rows purlwise, purling them on WS rows. Or choose any
selvedge stitch you want.
There are three sections given within the charts. After the first inches of ribbing,
work the first section of the chart. Then repeat the middle section to about 6
ins before desired length, work third section of chart and bind off.
Looking at the charts you will see that bands of five ribs are crossing.

1
They begin at one side with one rib, starting the next one 4 rows later, when
again 4 sts from two ribs are ready to be crossed. When there are five ribs
crossed in one row , the band is complete and in following rows will travel
across the scarf.
Then another band is starting on the opposite side. One crossed rib after
another, until there are five ribs crossed as well.
This is the rhythm: start one band, complete it, start a new band on the
opposite side within next RS row.
Let them move towards one another and when they meet, one band has to
go “over” and one has to go down.
As indicated in the charts, one band that takes over uses up the other
crossed ribs one by one.
This might sound complicated, but once you get the hang of it, you get into a
rhythm that renders the charts obsolete.

Notes:

- charts show RS rows only

- on WS rows always work a k1/p1 rib (aka stitches are worked as you see
them)

- when crossing the stitches, keep knit sts knit and purled sts purled, by this
you are shifting one rib at a time to one side

- selvedge sts are slipped purlwise at begin of row and purled at end of row
(or do as you prefer )
