REVIEW
ARTICLES
An article is a word that is used before a noun to show if the noun refers to something specific or
not. Articles in English "a" and "el" are used with great frequency in written English. It is important
grammatically when one or the other is used or no article is used.

THE DEFINITE ARTICLE

The definite article is "the." Use “the” both for singular and plural nouns.
Use the defined article when, by context, you know specifically what object you are referring to.
For example: "I want the red apple."

In the sentence above we find the article "the." It shows us that the speaker wants a specific apple.
Examples:

The car I bought broke down.

He has a son and a daughter. The daughter is a doctor.
The actors were really good.
I remember the day we first met.

USE OF DEFINITE ARTICLE “ THE”:

1. When we know who or what we are talking about. We use "the" to indicate something or
someone in particular , that's why it's called definite. We are talking about something or someone
specific that both the sender and the receiver of the message know because they have already left
the conversation earlier or because they both know it previously.

Examples:
What is the name of the restaurant?

~6~
Do you remember the day we went to New York?
Who is the president of the United States?
The doctor is very good.

2. With the names of geological regions, mountain chains, seas, oceans, groups of islands,
rivers and countries in plural.

Examples:
The United States
The Netherlands
The Andes
The Atlantic Ocean
The Canary Islands
The Nile River
3. To reference addresses (right, left, top, bottom) and to the cardinal points(north, south,
east, west).

Examples:
The south of France
The house on the left
The top of the page
4. With adjectives in superlative degree and ordinal numbers.

Examples:
The tallest building
The strongest man
The first time
The second floor

~7~
THE INDEFINITE ARTICLE

The meaning of "a" or "an" is the same and they are used to indicate something or someone in the
singular. We will never use them to refer to more than one thing.

"A" or "an" correspond to the following articles in Spanish: un, una.

Examples: I need a box.

The speaker does not tell us which box he needs. You just need a box, any box.

Lisa wants to see a movie.

Joe has a car.

She is a dancer.

Grammatical Rules

1. "A" is used with names that start with a consonant.

Examples:
a book
a pen
a chair
a girl
2. "An" is used with names that begin with a vowel.

Examples:
an animal
an ice cream
an example

~8~
an orange
an umbrella

Exceptions:

We use "a" before words that begin with the letters "u" or "eu" when these are pronounced as the
figurative sound "yu".

Examples:
a university
a euro

"An" is used with words that begin with "h", but only when it is not pronounced.

Examples:
an hour
a hospital
USE OF INDEFINITE ARTICLE

1. It is used to talk about something in general.

Examples:
He has a computer.
We work in a school.
I want an orange.
2. You can also use instead of "1".

Examples:
I want an apple and two oranges.
There are a hundred students in the school.

3. It is used to refer to a thing for the first time. The next time we refer to this thing, we will use
the particular article.

Example:
I live in an apartment. The apartment is big.

~9~
4. It is used to talk about someone's trade or political affiliation.

Examples:
Maria is a doctor.
Juan is an architect.
I am a democrat.

POSSESSION
APOSTROPHE FOR POSSESSION:
The possessive demonstrates property (having or possessing), and is formed by adding an
apostrophe and an "s" ('s) or only an apostrophe (') at the end of the word:
• Laura's pencil
• -Don't confuse with the plural of Laura, much less that Laura is a pencil.-

And although you can also express the possessive without an apostrophe, the usual is with an
apostrophe:
• My sister's car.
• The car belongs to my sister.
• But never: "The car of my sister".

SINGULAR NOUNS
Look at the following example:
Jodie’s eyes.
My sister’s job
REGULAR PLURAL NOUNS
If the word ends in "s" and is plural, like ladies, you have to put an apostrophe at the end of the
word to make it possessive.

Example:

 The ladies‘ restroom is closed.

LYRICS

I'm not a perfect person

There's many thing I wish I didn't do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know
I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you
I'm sorry that I hurt you
It's something I must live with every day
And all the pain I put you through
I wish I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
That's why I need you to hear
I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you
And the reason is you
And the reason is you
And the reason is you
I'm not a perfect person
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know
I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you
I've found a reason to show
A side of me you didn't know
A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you
