Instrument (Signalling) cable is typically a shielded (screened), twisted pair. This construction serves to
minimize “a crosstalk: (inductive coupling) that causes erroneous readings for the instrumentation. Thus,
instrument cables are isolated from external electrical interferences. In general, the instrument cable is
used in connecting a process instrument (temperature, pressure, flow sensor, etc.) to the process
controller. Ideally, the instrument cables are used to transmit and receive control system, analogue and
digital signals to and from sensors and equipment. The instrument cables are widely used in industries
such as power generations, distribution plants and petrochemical plants.
Instrument cables generally manufactured to the specification of BS5308-1 (Polyethylene Insulated) and
BS5308-2 (Polyvinyl Insulated). Typical construction of instrument cables are as follow.
