Question
Assume that 2kg of air is heated in a constant volume and constant pressure processes. (For air :
Cv=0.718kJ/kg.K, Cp=1.005kJ/kg.K, R=0.287kJ/kg.K)
a) Calculate the internal energy and enthalpy changes in each process. (60p.)
b) Calculate the heat transfers (Q1 and Q2) during these processes. (40p.)

Solution:
a) In the first process, the volume of system is constant. In the second process, the pressure of system
is constant. In both processes, the internal an enthalpy changes can be calculated by the following
relations:

Internal energy change: ∆U = mCv ∆T ∆U = 2 * 0.718* 10 = 14.36kJ

Enthalpy change: ∆H = mC p ∆T ∆H = 2 * 1.005* 10 = 20.1kJ

a) From the first law of thermodynamics.

Q1− 2 − W1− 2 = ∆U

In the first process, the volume is constant, and no boundary or other types of work. Hence the heat
transfer during the constant volume process can be calculated as:

Q1− 2 = ∆U = mCv ∆T = 2* 0.718* 10 = 14.36kJ

In the second process, the pressure is constant, and there is only boundary work. Hence the heat
transfer during the constant volume process can be calculated as:

Q1− 2 = ∆U + Wb = mCv ∆T + P∆V = mCv ∆T + mR∆T = m ( Cv + R ) ∆T = mC p ∆T

Q1− 2 = 2 * 1.005* 10 = 20.1kJ Wb = 20.1 − 14.36 = 5.74kJ
