Specific Objectives To Meet Goals

To use the change-of-base formula to rewrite and evaluate logarithmic expressions
To use the properties of logarithms to expand or condense logarithmic expressions
To be able to find a numeric value to a logarithmic expression with both a calculator or by hand

OHIO LEARNING STANDARD High School Functions F-LE 4 (Construct and compare
liner, quadratic, and exponential models and solve problems).
For exponential models, express as a logarithm the solution abct = d where a, c, and d are
numbers and the base b is 2, 10, or e; evaluate the logarithm using technology.

Motivational Techniques
Ask the students if they want an easier way to work with logarithms of base b. Inform the
students that there is a simple way to get efficient answers.

Materials Needed
Calculator, pencil, notebook, dry erase markers/board, textbook

Procedure For The Lesson

- Bell work (5-10 minutes).
- Collect worksheets/labs from previous class (2-3 minutes).
- Provide and explain the change-of-base formula (5-10 minutes).
- Go over examples for change-of-base (5-10 minutes)
- Introduce multiple ways to approach solving numeric logarithms. (10-15 minutes).
- Briefly cover expanding and condensing with variables (5-10 minutes)
- Allow for students to start homework (5-10 minutes)

Academic Language
Change-of-base, expansion, condense

Assessment Methods
Allow students to begin homework while I walk around the room checking if the students are
grasping the material.

Evaluation of Field Experience Student’s performance

I believe that this lesson played out better in one way and not as well in another way compared to
the last lesson I taught this semester. I say that I performed better because I had more experience
with the students and knew some of the ways to better attain attention from the students. On the
other hand, I was not nearly as planned for the lesson. I was scheduled for teaching on Thursday,
but on Monday I learned that Thursday was to be shortened classes. Mrs. Mankowski asked if I
would be willing to teach different material on Tuesday instead and I complied. I think that
because I didn’t have as much time to prepare, I didn’t feel as confident in my knowledge of the
material and it affected my teaching. However, I still believe I did a good job.
