• The Motor Drive
This is by 0 flanged motor and vee-rope drive. For adju.stment of.ropes the motor is
mounted on an adaptor plate with 4 bolts engaging slots in the main motor support
bracket. To adjust, it is only necessary to slacken the fixing nuts and lower by the
adjusting screws provided.

Headstock
The motor is started and stopped by means of the push buttons on the control unit on
the fast headstock. These buttons operate the starting panel. Spindle speeds are
obtained by means of the central levers on the front of the headstock, the speeds
being self indicating. The spindles should be stopped by means of the clutch operating
Iever before chongi ng speeds.
Feed and screw reverse and coarse pitch operating levers are also situated at the front
of the headstock.
The drive is transmitted through a self-adjusting double clutch on the pulley shaft
and stopped by o broke on the 1st shaft. No adjustment should be necessary, but if
trouble is experienced the advice of our Service Deportment should be sought.
Should there be o loss of air supply, the clutch moves into neutral automatically and
the brake is applied.

WARNING :
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WORK SHOULD NOT BE GRIPPED
IN BOTH FRONT AND REAR CHUCKS WHEN OUTBOARD
REAR STEADIES ARE BEING USED .

Saddles and Slides

The saddle is locked to the bed by means of the lever on the top of the right hand saddle wing,
this should, if possible, be locked when surfacing.
The top slide can be locked by means of the square headed screw at the front of the top slide.
Each division of the saddle screw dial represents ·001 in. movement of the tool, likewise the
tool moves .001 in. per division of the top slide dial.
There are wipers at the ends of the bed shear covers and these should be renewed as required .

DEAN SMITH & GRACE LTD BB

T~e ~uare Turret
This is of the automatic type and anti clockwise movement oF the lever unlocks the turret,
lifts the locating plunger and rotates the turret to the next station; the locking motion is of
course reverse to thi5. The turret can be locked In intermediate positions when this is
necessary. The dimensions of the turret ond the tool size are given on the capacity chart.

Tail stock
The position of the spindle clomping lever can be adjusted by slightly turning the nut with
2 tommy holes at the bottom of the clomping bolt .
Slight long tapers con be turned by offsetting the tailstoek from its shoe with the screws
provided.
To remove the centre retract the spindle fully when the centre will be automatically
ejected.
The cover at the end of the tailstock carries a felt wiper for keeping the spindle and bore
clean; this should be renewed when necessary .

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE OF SCREWCUTTING DIAL

This is amoH U)eful aid to screwcuulng althoughits use is limired rn certain threads ~nd pitches.
Where 3pf\llc!\bl" 1t cn~hlci; the nuu to be c ng~g c d without d~ngt!r of cross thre~d1ng. Thf! d1~I
may be used when rutting any pitch whi('h ii; rnnt::i i nPci ::i whole number of times in a length
ot 8 in . From rht~ 1r will be ~een chat the w hole n11mber~ of rhrn:id~ per inch can be cut, also
threads per inch ending in eighths. quarters and halves. viz. 2f. 2f, 2~ · t.p.i. Une revolution of
the dial is eguivalent to 8 In . length of thread on the screw. As the dial is divided into 16
divisions. the alternate ones being numbered I to 8, then from one n11rnbcrcd d1v1sion to the next
is~ of a revolution and is equivalent to I in. of screw thread. It will be seen therefore, that when
cutting a screw having a whole number of threads per inch, the spindle will make a whole number
of revolutions in one inch length , and as the leadscrew l1kew1se makes a whole number of revolu-
tions In the same distance the leadscrew nuts can be e11gag1:d al any numbered d1v1s1on on the
dial. From this ir follows that If the threads per inch in the screw to be cut 1s an even number,
a whole number of threads is contained in ~ 1n. and the nuts may be engaged al any of the 16
d1v1S1 ons on the dial. Similarly odd numbers can only be engaged at a11y numbered division:
threilds ending m halves cngilged every quarter revolution of the dial; thrcild s ending in quarters
evPry h::ilf rcvolulion; threads ending in eighths every revolution. For linc;ir inch pitches, convert
the pitch to an equivalent number of threads per inch (viz. ~ inches pitch-= It t.p.i.) and follow
the above rules. If the number of t.p.1. 1s neither a whole number nor does not end in+. }or+
then the dial cannot be used, in which cas.c the screw must be cut completely without dis-
engaging the nuts and by using the screw reverse mechanism, or spindle reverse to run lhe
saddle back with the nuts engaged. There are certain other special applications. of lhe dial and
information on any particular case will be supplied by our technical department on request.

• SCREWCUTTING INSTRUCTIONS

When setting the change gears it is important that there should be a smo11 amount of
backlash between each set of g~urs . This ensures that the drive to the ~r:rP.w will be
smooth and that no u11Jue stren is set vp on the change genr studs which might leud to
breakoge. No difficulty shovld be met with in mounting tl1~ Lhonge gears if they Qrc
set as shown in the diagram on the plates . If the screwcutting motion hos been
standing for cmy length of time al I the ports concerned should be lubr'icated together
with the change gears.

Reverse for screwcutting is obtained by reversing the spindl e vsing the main clutch
operating levers, a quicker speed being selected for reverse if desired .

Right hand or left-hand threads are :.elected by meQns of the lever at the front of the
headstock.

Coarse pitches are obtained by means of the coarse pitch operating lever on the
headstock which causes the gearbox drive to be taken from o driving shaft in the
headstock instead of from the spindle . Reverse for screwcutting when using coarse
pitch motion must be by reversing the spindle .

e For accurcite screwcutting it is essential that all slides should bP. adjusted properly with-
out backlash and locked when posstble.
e As the leodscrew thrust is token on bol 1 bearings, there should be no weor, and if there
is ony slackness it will be cciused by the checlmuts becoming loose. These can ecisily
be examined and adjusted if necessary.

When cutting very coarse leads, the nuts !iihuulJ u~ tmgoged and disengaged with the
lnth~ stepped, using the driving clutch to start and stop the soddle traverse. The top
sllde shoula also be locked during each cut to obviate any digging of the tool due to
the large helix angle of coarse lead screws.

As the rock pinion end hcndwheel shaft arc mounted on bal I or roller bearings no
adverse effect on the screwcutting iii ttxpttrit111t;t1U from dro~ of the pinion in the rack.

The leodscrew motion should be disconnected when not in use.

CLEANI NG OR REPLACING LEADSCREW NUTS

Thh h easily done by removing the thread indicator bracket from the side of the apron
when the nuts wi 11 pull out,

OEAN SMITH & GRACE l TO B13

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CUTTING MULTIPLE START SCREWS

For al I Multiple Start Screws the Coarse Pitch Ratio must be engaged to u~e the
I follow:ng method of dividing.
The starh cart be obtained by marking the spindle or chuck flange and the main
hcad~toek, the spindle or chuck flange being divided into the number of starts
required. Then 2, 3, 4, 6, or 7 starts can be obtained by pulling out of engage
ment the driving pinion operated by means of the lever giving fast and slow speed
ranges 8-1 , on the fast headstock.

The Spindle is then turned the requisite amount ond the pinion can then be
re engaged; care should be token not to disturb any other motion whilst this is
being done.

Before dividing, all backlash should be removed, with the work and leadscrew
turning in the direction of cutting.

Information on any particular case will be supplied on request by our Technical

Department .
