Open Position: Associate Director of District Planning

About the Office of District Planning:


Within the Division of Operations, ODP collaborates with superintendents and other offices across the Department
to develop and implement district- and borough-based plans that address overcrowding, school scale and
sustainability, programmatic needs, and new and reconfiguring school needs.

ODP’s work includes:


 Identifying space for new schools and programs
 Changing schools’ grade configurations
 Revising zone lines
 Re-siting existing schools and programs
 Enrollment planning and redesign

Position Summary:
The Associate Director of District Planning will coordinate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to
develop and implement the work outlined above.

Key Responsibilities:
 Lead large, cross-functional working groups representing 10+ DOE offices to create policy proposals and
develop public engagement plans (e.g., Press Office, Family and Community Engagement Office)
 Conduct analyses (quantitative and qualitative) to evaluate areas of need related to school quality,
overcrowding, and access to programming aligned to community need
 Lead teams in the creation of memorandums, presentations and other documents to communicate
analyses and recommendations to senior leadership
 Lead and manage community engagement efforts to develop and implement proposals aligned to
community need
 Build strong relationships with external stakeholders and cross-functional DOE partners in order to develop
and implement proposals as outlined above
 Develop materials for community engagement, including proposal summaries and briefing documents
 Write and develop mandated engagement documents (Educational Impact Statements/Building Utilization
Plans) that provide an overview of relevant proposals
 Manage logistical aspects of public hearings and community information sessions on relevant proposals
 Solicit and analyze public comments; respond to inquiries regarding specific proposals and general District
Planning activities

Preferred Qualifications:
 Excellent communications skills (verbal and written) in dealing with a variety of stakeholders
 Strong interpersonal skills; comfort and poise leading large working groups
 Excellent organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize effectively
 Strong analytical skills
 Excellent strategic and critical thinking ability
 Creative problem-solving skills with the ability to work well within a team
 Experience in the public sector and/or demonstrated interest in public education
 Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications- particularly Microsoft Excel
