Abstract
Reading comprehension one can be used as an important element for assessing linguistic
competence. Reading comprehension is an activity that a person does in order to capture the
contents or meaning contained in the discourse in depth, complete and thorough.Soedarso
(2006: 58) stated that "reading comprehension is the ability to understand main ideas, important
details and the whole notion of”. In other words, reading comprehension is a process of a
person in order to understand the meaning contained in a reading in detail, complete, and
thorough. Beside that Westwood (2008: 31) suggests that reading comprehension can be
defined as a process of active thinking because readers deliberately building to form an
understanding of the meaning of concepts and in-depth information from a text. Thinking Maps
is a learning method that tries to integrate the ability to read and think, the role of the teacher as
a drafter, facilitator and motivator to generate simple to complex thinking skills. This study aimed
to pilot the learning model Thinking Maps in improving the reading ability of scientific
understanding. This research is expected that this learning model can be used as an alternative
method of learning in improving students' scientific attitude.
