Lesson Element: Add a mixed number and a fraction

1. New York State Learning Standard(s) Addressed:

A) 4.NF.3c- Add and subtract mixed numbers with like
denominators, e.g., by replacing each mixed number with an
equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and
the relationship between addition and subtraction.
B) ISTE Standard 6- Teacher will facilitate learning with technology to
support student achievement.

2. Lesson Objectives: What will students know and do as a result of this lesson?
A) Students will be able to add a mixed number and a fraction
B) Students will use http://www.abcya.com/adding_fractions.htm and microsoft paint

3. Introduce Learning Activity: What learning experiences will students engage in?
How will you use these learning experiences or their student products as formative
assessment opportunities?
A) Bellringer: Student will complete the “Sprint” on their chromebook/computer:
https://www.zearn.org/sprint_fluencies/742

B) Motivator: When cooking fractions are often used. Imagine making the most moist
and delicious chocolate cake. If you are doubling the recipe or cutting it in half, for
example, you will need to know how to add/subtract fractions (i.e. 1 ½ cup flour-
reserve ¼ of the cup for the topping)
4. Provide Information:
A) Teacher will use the Eureka Math Book Lesson 30 (p.399 in teacher’s edition)
B) Students will go to https://www.zearn.org/video_lessons/465 and review the “MATH
CHAT”
C) Teacher will have the students open up Microsoft paint. Teacher will have the students
make a shape and then tell the students use lines to divide the shape into fractions. Next the
students will make a second shape and divide differently to create an equivalent fraction.
Lastly the teacher will have the students create two shapes with fractions and add them and
subtraction problems as well (5 each)

5. Provide Practice

A) Students will complete the lesson 30 problem set (teacher’s edition pages 406-408)
B) Students will go to
