Foreword
In 2013, I published a "Hillegass Genealogy" as an electronic book (aka e-book) on the Scrbd
website. Included in that genealogy was a marriage of a Hillegass descendant to Emma
Amelia Yuengling. I had no additional information regarding her Yuengling ancestors.
The Hilllegass descendant who married Emma Amelia Yuengling was William A. Hewes. He
is the 3rd great-grandson of the immigrant George Michael Hillegass who came from
Sinsheim, Germany to America about 1724-1725 This e-book documents my research of
Emma Yuengling's ancestors and establishes the connection of the Yuengling and Hillegass
families (see Chapter 6).
Emma Amelia's father, David G. Yuengling (a beer master, biermeister in German),
immigrated from Germany in 1828 and opened a brewery business in Pottsville,
Pennsylvania in 1829. I was able to complete a Yuengling family tree using the public federal
census data* and the burial records from the online "Find A Grave" website. I also found a
history of the Yuengling family descendants who ran the brewery business on the Yuengling
Company website. My Yuengling descendants report can be found beginning on page 24
Since George Michael Hillegass is my 8th granduncle, I also have a connection to the
Yuengling family. Emma A. Yuengling is the wife of William A. Hewes, my 5th cousin five
times removed. The 1900 Census reported that Emma Amelia (age 41) had no children. If
she had children, they would be my 6th cousins three times removed
Another "biermeister" from Germany who immigrated to America and settled in Pennsylvania
was Wilhelm Gretz. Because of the similarity to my surname, "Gretzinger," I researched the
Gretz family looking for connections to my family. The results of this research are included in
the Gretz descendants report, page 19.

Chapter 1
Yuengling Generation 1
David Gottlieb Jüngling was born in Aldingen, Wuerttemberg, Germany on 2 March 1808.
Aldingen is a suburb of Stuttgart (its population today is about 7,500). In Germany, David's
surname was "Jüngling." In America, it was anglicized to become Yuengling*.
At the age of 20 in 1828, David immigrated to America. The following year, he began the
"Eagle Brewery" on Center Street in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. The brewery
burned down in 1831 and the business relocated to W. Mahantongo Street and 5th Street in
Pottsville.
David married Elizabeth Betz who was born on 28 September 1823 in Stuttgart, Germany.
They were married before 1845 and had five children. They were: Anna Mary born 7 May
1845, Theresa J. born 16 July 1846, Frederick George born 26 January 1848, Emma Amelia
born 1 October 1857 and William Gaul born 17 October 1861.
In 1873, David's son, Frederick George at age 25, joined his father in the brewery business.
The company's name was changed to "D. G. Yuengling & Son." The bald eagle, however,
remained the company's emblem.
Four years later, David died on 27 September 1877 at age 69. He is buried at Charles Baber
Cemetery, Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA. His wife, Elizabeth, survived David by 17 years.
She died at the age of 71 on 9 January 1894 and is buried with her husband at Charles
Baber Cemetery.
Chapter 7 discusses the Yuenglings who are buried at this cemetery.
__________________________________________________________________________
*I searched the 1900 Census for the surname Yuengling who were living in Pottsville,
Schuylkill County, PA and found there were a total of 89 individuals (the population of
Pottsville in 1900 was 15,710). I was able to connect 18 of those Yuenglings to the
immigrant, David G. Yuengling.
As I browsed the 1900 Census data, I noted a number of Yingling surnames living in
Pottsville. There were a total of 398 who were born in Germany. I was not able to connect
any of the Yinglings to the Yuengling family. Since the Yingling surname may also have
been anglicized, there may be a connection in Germany to the Yuengling family. Research of
German records is necessary to establish any connection.

Chapter 2
Yuengling Generation 2
Frederick George was born 26 January 1848 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA. As noted in
Chapter 1, he joined the brewery with his father in 1873. The following year he married
Minna Dohram born 25 March 1849 in New York. They had two children: Edith Louise born
18 March 1875 and Frank Dohram born 27 September 1876.
After the death of his father in 1877, Frederick at age 29 assumed management of the
brewery, D. G. Yuengling & Son. Twenty years later, Frederick George died on 2 January
1899 at age 51. He is buried at the same cemetery as his parents, the Charles Baber
Cemetery in Pottsville.
Frederick's wife, Minna, died 6 February 1912 and is buried with her husband. She died at
the age of 63 years.
David G. Yuengling's third daughter, Emma Amelia, was born 1 October 1857. At the age of
31 years, Emma married William Augustus Hewes on 24 January 1888 by Rev. J. F. Powers
in Pottsville, PA. William was born 17 February 1850 in Pottsville, PA and was the son of
John Gilpin Hewes and Margaret Hillegass Nicholas. This marriage resulted in the Hillegass
connection to the Yuengling family from Pottsville, PA (see Chapter 6).
The 1900 Census recorded that William (age 50) and Emma (age 43) had no children.
William died in 1909 at age 59. Emma died in 1944 at age 87. They are buried at Charles
Baber Cemetery, Pottsville, PA.

Chapter 3
Yuengling Generation 3
Frank Dohram Yuengling was born on 27 September 1876 in Pottsville, PA. After his father,
Frederick George Yuengling, died in 1899, Frank, at age 23, assumed management of the
brewery.
About 1907 Frank married Augusta Curray Roseberry. She was born on 29 September
1882. They had five children: Augusta R. born 17 September 1908, Frederick George born
23 September 1909, David G. born about 1910, Frank Dohram Jr. born in 1913 and Richard
L. born 16 July 1914.
Augusta married Louis N. Ulmer, born 20 October 1903 and died 17 April 1985 at age 82.
Frederick George married Catharine Kaerchner Dreshman. She was born on 19 December
1909 an died in October 1986 at age 77. Frank Dohrman, Jr. married Edith Channell, born
16 December 1915 and died 14 January 2008 at age 93. Richard L. married Marjorie
(maiden name is not known). She was born in 1921 and died at age 76 in 1997. All of Frank
D.'s children and their spouses are buried at the Charles Baber Cemetery in Pottsville.
Frank Dohram Sr. died in Pottsville on 29 January 1963 at the age of 87 years. His wife,
Augusta, died on 5 June 1975 in Pottsville. She was 93 years old. Both Frank and Augusta
are buried at the Charles Baber Cemetery, Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA.
With Frank's death in 1963, two of his sons, Frank Dohram Jr. and Richard L., took over
management of the "D. G. Yuengling & Son" company. Frank Jr. was 50 years of age and
his brother, Richard L., was 48 when they assumed control of the family business.

Chapter 4
Yuengling Generation 4
Frederick and Catharine had a child, Frederick George Jr. born 12 July 1931 in Pottsville, PA.
He married Mary Jeanette Paul who was born on 31 August 1935.
Frederick George Sr. died on 23 February 1998 at the age of 89 years. His wife, Catharine,
died 12 years earlier in October 1986. Catharine was 77 years of age when she died. Both
Frederick and Catharine are buried at the Charles Baber Cemetery, Pottsville.
Frank Dohrman, the third son of Frank Dohrman Yuengling Sr., was born in 1913. He
married Edith L. Channell. Edith was born on 16 December 1915 in Pottsville, PA.
When his father died on 29 January 1963, Frank Jr. and his brother, Richard L.Yuengling Sr.,
assumed management of the brewery business. Frank Jr. was 50 years of age and his
brother, Richard, was 46 when they took control of the company.
Eight years after assuming management of the brewery with his brother, Frank Jr. died in
1971 at the age of 58. His wife, Edith, survived her husband and lived another 38 years.
She died on 14 January 2008 in Pottsville at the age of 93 years. Frank and Edith are buried
at the Charles Baber Cemetery.
The fourth son of Frank Dohrman Yuengling, Jr., was Richard L. Yuengling, Sr., born on 16
July 1914. As noted above, he and his brother, Frank Dohrman Jr., assumed control of the
brewery in 1963 after the death of their father.
About 1929, Richard Yuengling married Marjorie H. (her maiden name is unknown). She was
born in 1921. They has a son, Richard L. Yuengling, Jr., who was born about 1930.
Marjorie died in 1997 at the age of 76 years. Richard survived her by two years. He died on
25 March 1999 at the age of 85 years. They are buried at the Charles Baber Cemetery in
Pottsville.

Chapter 5
Yuengling Generation 5
Frederick George Jr. was born on 12 July 1931 in Pottsville, PA. He married Mary Jeanette
Paul who was born on 31 August 1935. I have not identified any children.
Frederick was owner and president of the Yuengling Dairy Products Corporation until his
retrierment in 1985. He and his wife relocated to Delray Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida.
His wife, Mary Jeanette, died there on 2 July 2009 at the age of 74 years. Three years later
on 3 August 2012 Frederick died at Delray Beach, Florida. He was 81 years of age.
Both Frederick and Mary are buried at Charles Baber Cemetery in Pottsville, PA.
Richard L. Jr. was born about 1930. In 1985 he became president of the family business,
"D. G. Yuengling & Son." That year, the National Register of Historic Places listed the D. G.
Yuengling & Son." Following is the listing as it appears on the national register's website.

Chapter 6
The Yuengling / Hillegass Connection
Emma Amelia Yuengling was the third daughter of David Gottlieb Yuengling, founder of the
"D. G. Yuengling & Son" brewery. Emma's husband was William A. Hewes. The following
outlines the connection of the Yuengling family to the Hillegass family.
William A. Hewes (1850-1909) married Emma Amelia Yuengling (1857-1944)

.Emma Amelia Yuengling is the wife of the 2nd great-grandson of Michael Hillegass. Their
marriage established the connection between the Yuengling and Hillegass families.
Of particular interest is Michael Hillegass. In 1775, the Continental Congress appointed
Micheal Hillegass and George Clymer as joint treasures for the United Colonies. They were
entrusted with raising funds for the Revolutionary War. George Clymer subsequently
resigned. As the first Treasurer of our Country, Michael Hillegass served from 29 July 1775
to 11 September 1789.

Chapter 7
Charles Baber Cemetery
The Charles Baber Cemetery is located in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
Contributors of tombstone photos and memorials have identified 28 Yuenglings who are
interred at this cemetery. In my research, I have connected these names to the descendants
of David G. Yuengling, except for the following Yuenglings.
Three of the above were on the same monument: Charles F. Yuengling, Louisa A. Yuengling,
and W. Frederick Yuengling. The 1900 Census for Pottsville lists Charles F. Yuengling, born
Jun 1834 (tombstone has year as 1835) in Germany, and his wife, Louise, born Mar 1842 in
Pennsylvania. Based on the census data, the above Charles and Louisa Yuengling buried at
Charles Baber Cemetery are husband and wife. I also believe W. Frederick is their child.
Charles F., who was born in Germany to German parents, immigrated to America in 1853, 25
years after David G. Yuengling. Additional research of German records is necessary to
determine if Charles F. and David G. were related.
Charles' wife, Louisa, was born in Pennsylvania. Her father was born in Switzerland and her
mother in Germany. Her maiden name is unknown.
The listing of "New York Deaths and Burials" recorded a August W. Yuengling, born in
Germany, died on 11 July 1874 in New York City, NY and buried in Pottsville, PA. He may
be another son of Charles F. and Louisa A. Yuengling.
Child Yuengling of D. G. may be a child of David Gottlieb (D. G.) Yuengling and his wife,
Elizabeth Betz.
I found no additional information concerning W. G. Yuengling (age 13 yrs), Male Child
Yuengling (age 7 yrs) and Clara Sarah Yuengling (birth and death dates unknown).

Chapter 8
Gretz Generation 1 and 2
Johann Nepomuck (Grätz) Gretz was born on 3 February 1827 in Jöhlingen,
Walzbachtal. About 1850 he married Mathilde Pfund. She was born on 7 July 1828 in
Jöhlingen, Walzbachtal. Johann and Mathilde had nine children, five sons and four
daughters, between 1851 and 1868.
Mathilde died on 12 May 1910 at the age of 82 years. Her husband, Johann, died a year after
Mathilde, at the age of 84 years on 27 March 1911. Both Johann and his wife died in
Jöhlingen, Walzbachtal.
_________________________________________________________________________
*The Geni World Family website recorded three generations of Johann L. Grätz. This source
listed his son, Johann N. Grätz and nine of his grandchildren. The surname was listed as
“Graetz.” The letter “e” is typically added when the umlaut is dropped resulting in "Graetz."
10
Chapter 9
Gretz Generation 3
Julius Gretz
The first son of Johann N. and Mathilde (Grätz) Gretz was Julius. He was born on 4 July
1851 in Jöhlingen, Walzbachtal, Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He was baptized
on 8 July 1851, five days after his birth. He immigrated at the age of 19 years from Bremen,
Germany and arrived at the port of New York on 15 March 1869 on the ship “Hermann.” His
occupation was recorded as “Farmer.”
Sometime between 1869 and 1879, he relocated to Massachusetts and was naturalized at
the US District Court of Boston on 29 September 1879. A copy of his naturalization record
appears below. His address was listed as “Sommerville,” a city located directly to the
northwest of Boston, in Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
US New England Naturalization Index, 1796-1906
Sommerville was first settled in 1630 as part of Charlestown, and established as a town in
1842, when it was separated from the urbanizing Charlestown because it was still largely
rural. Sommerville was officially incorporated as a city in 1872 due to its growing population
and increasing industrialization. The city occupies slightly over 4 square miles (2,560 acres).
The population in 1870 was 14,685 resulting a density of almost six persons per acre. The
2014 census population of Sommerville was 78,901, or 31 persons per acre.
As noted above, Julius was a farmer and he moved to Sommerville sometime between 1869
and 1879. Because of the density of the population in that time period, it is doubtful if Julius
continued to farm the land.
I was unable to confirm his occupation in Sommerville, or if he ever married. His date of
death is unknown ans well as his burial location.
11
Wilhelm (William) Gretz
Wilhelm (William) Gretz was born 5 October 1852, in Jöhlingen, Walzbachtal, Karlsruhe,
Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He immigrated to America in 1870, a year after his brother,
Julius, at age 18. On 24 March 1876 at age 24, he married Mary Bender, born December
1852, She was also born in Germany. Mary immigrated in 1873. Since their marriage was in
1876, William and Mary were married in Pennsylvania, probably Philadelphia, after they
immigrated to America.
The 1900 Census for Philadelphia, Ward 20 recorded William and Mary Goetz* family living
at 1540 N. Franklin Street. Listed were four of her living children, Lillie (Lillian) born
September 1882, Louis born October 1884, William Jr.born 27 August 1888 and Herbert born
January 1898. Two children, Mary born 29 April 1877 died 9 May 1877 and W. William born
18 March 1878 died 28 March 1878. Both are buried at Mount Vernon Cemetery,
Philadelphia, PA. Louis died on 20 October 1911 at age 27 years.
In 1882, William Gretz in partnership with Leonard Rieger opened the "Rieger & Gretz
Brewing Company" in North Philadephia at Germantown and Oxford Avenues. The partner,
Leonard Rieger, however died before 1910. Mary, his wife (a widow), and three children,
Lilly, Caroline and Albert, were living at 1528 N. Franklin Street, just a few houses from
William and Mary Gretz at 1540 N. Franklin Street.
After Prohibition ended in 1933 the company was renamed the "William Gretz Brewing
Company." The brewery remained in the Gretz family for three generations. In 1954, the
grandson of William Gretz, Robert J. Gretz, left the business. The brewery shut down in
1961 but still stands today.
As noted above, William's partner was Leonard Rieger. He was born in Germany in
December 1846. In 1881, he married Mary (born September 1859 in Pennsylvania, maiden
name unknown). They had four children: Lulu (Lilly) born December 1882, Carrie (Caroline)
born September 1884, Leonard, Jr. born May 1887 and Albert born April 1895.
__________________________________________________________________________
*The census enumerator recorded the surname as Goetz. The family, however, is that of
William and Mary Gretz and their four children. The enumerator may not have understood
the surname and misspelled it. He may have been familiar with the surname Goetz as there
are about 800 Goetz individuals listed in the Philadelphia 1900 census.
12
Leonard Gretz
Leonard was born on 22 October 1860 in Jöhlingen, Walzbachtal, Karlsruhe,
Baden-Württemberg, Germany. At the age of 20 years, he followed his brother, Julius and
Wilhelm, and immigrated to America in 1880. He settled in Philadelphia and in 1886 he
married Ameltea, maiden name unknown. She was born in May 1868 in Pennsylvania. Her
father was born in Germany and her mother in Pennsylvania.
Leonard and Ameltea had two children, Lenore born April 1889 and Otto born July 1894.
Both were born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The 1900 Census recorded that in addition to
the two children living in the household, there was a boarder, Charles Yeager, born May
1871 in Germany and a “servant,” Amelie Their, born June 1873 in Germany.
In 1899 at age 39, Leonard applied for a United States Passport in Pennsylvania, probably
Philadelphia. The application listed his birth as 21 October 1860 in Germany. He may have
planned to visit his parents in Germany (his father did not die until 1911 and his mother in
1910). Fifteen years later in 1914 at age 54, he again applied for a United States Passport.
Since both of his parents had died, it is not clear if he planned to visit Germany. There were,
however, two siblings, Johanna and Johann, still living in Germany.
I have no information regarding the death or burial location of Leonard or his wife, Ameltea.

Chapter 10
Gretz Generation 4
Around 1917, William registered for the WWI draft. A copy of his Registration Card is below.
His occupation was Secretary & Engineer of the William Gretz Brewing Company, He was
listed as support for his wife and three children (Ruth, Jane and Marie).
About 1942, he registered for the Selective Service (see copy).
William's and Jane's death dates and burial locations are unknown.
14
Chapter 11
Gretz Generation 5
Robert James Gretz was the grandson of the founder of the Gretz Brewery Company. He
was born about 1922 in Philadelphia. He married Mary Eloise Morris, born about 1925 in
Pennsylvania. She was from the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia.
Robert and Mary were married in 1947 and resided in Gladwyne, PA. They had four
children: Robert J. Jr., Stephen E., Michael J. and Suzanne.
In the 1940s and early 1950s, Robert J. Sr. was Director of Sales for the Gretz Brewery
Company. He left the company in 1954 and founded the Delco Beverage Company.
Robert J. died on 25 September 2013 at the age of 91. His wife, Mary Eloise, died on 19
July 2017. Robert’s obituary appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer on 29 September 2013. A
copy follows.
Obituary: Robert J. Gretz, 91, brewery scion
Robert J. Gretz, 91, a scion of the family that brewed beer in Philadelphia under the Gretz
name and later sold it, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, of coronary artery disease at Beaumont at
Bryn Mawr.
The Rieger & Gretz Brewing Co. was founded in 1882 by Mr. Gretz’s grandfather, William. It
was renamed the William Gretz Brewing Co. after Prohibition ended in 1933. During the
company’s heyday in the 1940s and early 1950s, Robert Gretz was director of sales. Under
his leadership, the firm became one of the largest, most successful breweries in Philadelphia.
The company outlasted others in North Philadelphia and Brewerytown, according to
Pennsylvania brewery historian Rich Wagner, because of savvy marketing and adoption of
the can. “The beer can was a new thing in 1935, and Gretz was one of the beers that went
into cans,” said Wagner, on Hidden City Philadelphia.com. “If you weren’t in that packaged
beer market, you stood to go out of business.”
The brewery sponsored men’s and women’s bowling teams, a barbershop quartet, and one
year a televised beauty pageant called the “The Gretz Cavalcade of Girls,” according to
Hidden City Philadelphia. The winner was Joan Kinckiner from Camden.
Mr. Gretz left the business in 1954 after tension developed between the generations. The
brewery at Germantown and Oxford Avenues shut down in 1961. The building still stands, a
testament to the rich history of the business, the family said in a statement.
Mr. Gretz then founded a new enterprise, the Delco Beverage Co. The firm later became the
Gretz Beer Co. It still has operations on Stony Lane in Doylestown and on Main Street in
Norristown’s East End. An Anheuser Busch wholesaler, the firm distributes craft beer across
15
Norristown’s East End. An Anheuser Busch wholesaler, the firm distributes craft beer across
the nation.
Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Gretz grew up in Mount Airy. He graduated from La Salle High
School and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Villanova University. In 1947, he
married the former Eloise Morris, also from Mount Airy. She had been impressed by
billboards on Roosevelt Boulevard featuring Gretz Beer, she said, and later met him in Ocean
City, N.J. The two made their home in Gladwyne.
He served in the Marines during World War II. An avid golfer, Mr. Gretz was a longtime
member of the Merion Golf Club and the Philadelphia Country Club. He also enjoyed sailing.
Surviving, besides his wife of 66 years, are sons Robert J. Jr., Stephen E., and Michael J.;
daughter Suzanne; and seven grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30, at St. John Vianney Church, 350
Conshohocken State Rd., Gladwyne. Friends may call starting at 9:30. Interment is in Calvary
Cemetery.
Donations may be made to Acting Without Boundaries, 750 E. Haverford Rd., Bryn Mawr,
Pa. 19010.
As noted in the obituary, the original brewery founded in 1882 was the Rieger & Gretz
Brewing Co. A picture of an advertisement is below.
16
With a surname of "Gretzinger," my nickname in high school was "Gretz." The nickname has
stuck over the years and is still used today by friends.
A few years ago, my son's fraternity brother gave him a collection of Gretz Beer coasters
mounted in a picture frame. The collection hangs next to the bar in our game room.
17
Chapter 12
Gretz / Gretzinger Connection
Because of the similarly in my surname, Gretzinger,” to that of the Gretz surname, I
researched the Gretz family in Germany looking for some connection. Since many
German immigrants anglicized their surname after arriving in America, I felt there may
be a connection to our families.
My ancestor's surname on his immigration records was recorded as "Grözinger." His
son anglicized the surname by dropping the umlaut and adding an "e," and surname
became Groezinger. Later the "o" was dropped and a "t" added, and our American
surname became "Gretzinger."
As I researched the Gretz surname, I found that in the 1900 Census for Philadelphia,
Ward 20, the Gretz surname was recorded as “Goetz” for William and Mary Gretz and
three of their children. The fourth child, however, the surname was listed as “Gretz.” I
believe the listing of “Goetz” by the census enumerator was an error.
With the help of the Geni World Family Tree website, I found that the Gretz surname in
Germany for William (Wilhelm) Gretz, the immigrant, was “Grätz.” By dropping the
umlaut and adding an “e,” the surname became “Graetz.” It appears that the surname
was anglicized by dropping the “a” to become Gretz.
Based on my research, I was not able to find any connection of the Gretz / Gretzinger
families in America. In addition, my immigrant’s German surname, "Grözinger," does
not appear to be connected to the Gretz immigrant’s surname, “Grätz.”

Descendants Report for Johann Leonard (Grätz) Gretz
Generation 1
1. JOHANN LEONARD (GRÄTZ)1 GRETZ was born on 14 Oct 1780 in Jöhlingen, Walzbachtal, Karlsruhe,
