Task I: Professional Goal Setting

Knowledge of Self as an Individual

Goal: During this experience, I will serve as a positive role model and advocate

for the students.

Procedure: I will accomplish this goal by introducing myself to the students,

actively listening to their thoughts and questions, offering respectful advice,

attending school-sponsored events, and emphasizing the importance of education.

Evaluation: I will evaluate my goal by continually discussing my professional

presentation with my cooperating teachers and other faculty members. I will

reflect on my daily interactions with the students, whether they were during

lessons, class time, school activities, or in the hall. I will determine if my actions

had a positive influence and reflected my personal philosophy of education.

Knowledge of the Learner

Goal: During this experience, I will recognize and meet the diverse needs of the

students in the classroom.

Procedure: I will accomplish this goal by researching the demographics of the

school (ELLs, IEPs, disabilities, etc.), observing student-student and student-

teacher interactions, discussing student accommodations and needs with my

cooperating teachers, learning about the students as individuals, and diversifying

my instructional methods as needed.

Evaluation: I will evaluate this goal by reflecting on the educational effectiveness

at the end of every lesson and recognizing the students who may need additional
support. I will ask my cooperating teachers and university supervisor what

methods worked well and what methods I should apply for future lessons.

Knowledge of Content

Goal: During this experience, I will present content in a sequential manner during

individual and class lesson times.

Procedure: I will accomplish this goal by setting educational goals and objectives

for each grade level and piece of music. I will then choose specific objectives to

address for each lesson and create sequential lesson plans for each piece. I will

follow the natural progression of musical concepts: pulse, tone, rhythm, notes,

articulation, dynamics, etc.

Evaluation: I will evaluate this goal by comparing the educational objectives for

each lesson plan. I will work with my cooperating teachers to pre-assess the

students to determine their background knowledge prior experiences, and

readiness to learn the next concept. With the assistance of my cooperating

teacher, I will review my rationale for a lesson plan to confirm the pre-assessment

and learning theories match the instructional methods.

Knowledge of Pedagogy

Goal: During this experience, I will apply effective and appropriate classroom

management strategies in accordance with the grade level(s).

Procedure: I will accomplish this goal by identifying my cooperating teachers’

classroom management approaches and incorporating them into my classroom

instruction. I will set clear expectations and structure for each grade level. As I
learn how the students respond, I will determine other possible techniques that

may increase the effectiveness of my classroom management techniques.

Evaluation: I will evaluate this goal by observing the students’ responses to the

management strategies and determining their engagement in the lesson. I will

reflect on what strategies worked well and which strategies I should modify. I

will determine how the effectiveness of each strategy in relation to the size of the

class and age or grade level of the students. I will discuss the success and/or areas

for improvement of my classroom management skills with my cooperating

teachers and university supervisor.

Knowledge of Self as a Teacher and Member of a Learning Community

Goal: During this experience, I will communicate with teachers throughout the

school district, administrators, and parents to improve my collaboration skills.

Procedure: I will accomplish this goal by meeting with teachers to ask questions

about students, school policies, or other general information. I will provide

feedback on the students’ progress and behavior for the elementary teachers when

we walk the students back to their classrooms. I will ask administrators for

professional advice about resumes, interviews, and job applications. I will

introduce myself to parents during school activities (pep band/concerts) and

communicate student progress with parents during parent-teacher conferences.

Evaluation: I will evaluate my goal by reflecting on my various interactions with

members of the learning community and how I presented myself as a

professional. I will write a reflection on my experience of parent-teacher

conferences and focus on what gained from the experience and what aspects I
may add or change. I will discuss how I have presented myself as a teacher and

created collaborative relationships with my cooperating teachers.
