1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
Youth for social welfare is a dynamic group of youth of Bardiya which focuses on the different aspects of
social welfare. Youth influencing policies and actions at all levels to develop the sustainable agriculture
related issues, promote sustainable development goals, Environmental issues, Social issues and
Child/Youth/Women issues at all levels society to nation and whole world. From the time of its
establishment, it has established to work for the benefit of Youth, community, farmers, and women. From
organizing workshop, seminars to increase the caliber of Youth to organizing training and awareness
programs to educate society.

1.2 What exactly has YSW done?

YSW has organized a different of program and activities, depending primarily on the interest and need of
the specific scenario.
There are, however, four types of activities (agriculture and SDGs, Social issues, Environmental issues,
Children/Women/ Youth related issues) within the YSW program that all undertake in varying degrees.
We had conducted awareness program on climate change in different school to make aware the student on
climate change and last but not the least for the welfare of community of Bardiya. Together, these
Four areas ensure a balanced committee program and provide important experience and opportunities for
the overall development of each field.

1.3 Why is YSW important?

Today’s young youths tomorrow’s parents, professionals, business leaders and community leaders. With
the help of programs like YSW organizes; youth can gain tools and skills necessary to develop into
responsible and productive members of society. YSW can instill in its members life skills that can be
shared with others for generations to come. YSW helps youth to engage in various social responsibilities
among the young people of today as well as the passion of caring for others.
2.0 About awareness program on Drug abuse
2.1 Overview
YSW is going to organize Awareness program on Drug abuse in School level and village level in
Madhuban Municipality, Bardiya on May 29 to June 5, 2018.
A drug is any substance that, when inhaled, injected, smoked, consumed, absorbed into the body,
modifies one or more a temporary physiological change in the body. If a drug is taken in prescribed
amount is called Pharmacy medicine drug that used to cure or ameliorate any symptom of illness and
disease. The prolonged use of drugs may lead to the dependence of the body on them results drug
addiction. The problematic issues in the world is that use of high amount of psychoactive drugs that affect
the function of the central nervous system, altering perception, mood or consciousness. It includes
sedative and tranquilizers (benzodiazepines), opiate Narcotics (opium, cocaine, heroin), stimulants
(caffeine, cocaine), Hallucinogens (LSD, Ganja, Charas and alcohol) types drugs that have side effect on
human health.
Drug abuse is a patterned use of a drug for non-medicinal purpose and in quantities and frequencies
which impair physical and mental disorder. Drug abuse is one of the serious issues of the world. The
Habitual, psychological and physiological dependence on drug is called drug addiction. Mostly people
engaged in drug addiction due to curiosity, family history, friend pressure, relief from pain, desire of
doing more work, overcome frustration and depression and pleasure or fun. Nepalese religious and
culture also promotes use of drugs like alcohol, Ganja, Bhang. Drug addiction is the serious national
issues which increases committing criminal activities in society like child abuse, domestic violence, rapes
and assaults and health problems. Alcoholism, smoking and using hemp plants for various purpose is
common in Nepal which causes serious physiological health problem like kidney damage, liver damage,
heart attack and mental illness.
Drug abuse is the worldwide problem where a quarter of a billion people used drugs (World Drug Report).
Around 29.5 million people and 0.6% of the global adult population were engaged in problematic use of
drugs (World Drug Report-2015).It is reported that 12 million people inject drug worldwide where 1.6
million living with HIV,6.1 million are living with hepatitis(UNODC report-2015).

In Nepal it becomes serious problem among youth where mostly youth of 20-24 years engaged in drug
addiction. Most of active working age (15-39) youth involved in drug addiction which may lead to bring
serious social and national problem. Due to various problems, most of youth of Nepal are involved in
drug abuse which is most serious issues for nation. Particularly, the urban and sub-urban areas of Nepal
are susceptible to sale and abuse of drugs. It is reported that people engaged in drug addiction due to
mostly peer pressure (78.7%), curiosity (58.5%) and family problem (19.9%) in Nepal (CBS-2068).
About more than 91,534 people take hard drug (CBS-2068). Opiates, cannabis and tranquilizers are the
most popular drug in Nepal.

Drug addiction is also increases problematic issues in Madhuban, Bardiya due to open Boarder to India.
Mostly Youth and college students are involved in drug abuse in increasing trend. If there is no any
measures taken to solve this problem that may bring serious problem in society and as whole Bardiya
district development so YSW is going to make aware youth and school students about drug abuse as
thinking to solve this problem some extent.
2.2 Problem Statement
Drug abuse among youth is of rising concern in Bardiya District. Most of active youth of age between 18
to 25 years are engaging in drug addiction due to peer pressure, curiosity, lack of awareness and
unemployment. About 22% of campus and school student involve in drug abuse. The use of
hallucinogens drugs like Ganja, Bhang, Charas and alcohol is increase in increasing trend among youth
and college student in Madhuban, Bardiya. The drug addiction brought serious social problems like sex
abuse, accidents, STD disease like HIV and criminal activities likes rape and gang fights. Daily some
crime is happening related to drug addiction in this locality. It is serious problem for nation because most
of active working youth groups involved in drug addiction. It harms to individual, social and nation as
well.

2.3 Justification of program

Drug abuse becomes serious social problem in Madhuban, Bardiya. Many people and youth are involved
in drug addiction due to lack of awareness and strict policy. This program will make youth aware on drug
abuse and its side effect on human health, social and social development that help to reduce the drug
abuser in this area. Drug abuse is the serious rooted problem in this vicinity. It is essential to uproot this
problem from ground level by making youth and student conscious towards its effect. If no any timely
measures is taken, it will bring serious social problem in our society. The awareness program drug abuse
is most essential in school level and village level to reduce involving of students and youth in it. We think
that this program will be fruitful to students and youth by making them aware on it. Lack of awareness are
often cited as the main reasons for youth getting involved in drug use so It is essential to generate
awareness and organize program in schools and colleges about the ill effects of drug abuse and addiction.

2.4 Objectives
 To reduce drug abuse issues by making aware among youth and students in Madhuban, Bardiya
 To document the present scenario of drug addiction
 To reduce the social problem related with drug addiction
 To make aware people on drug abuse and its side effects on health, social and social development
 To reduce drug abuser in Madhuban, Bardiya

Method and Material

Desk study has been done in order to be familiar with documentation of actual status of drug abuse in
Madhuban, Bardiya. The overall design of program will be based on survey equipped with standard
questionnaire. The following method will used to collect information about status of drug abuse.
1. Selection Program Area:
The site for the program is Madhuban municipality, Bardiya district. Bardiya small district of Nepal lies
in western part Bheri zone in midwestern development region. The use of drug among the youth is
increased due to open broader and lack of awareness.
2. Morphometry:
 Location: Terai, Midwestern development region, province No. 05, Bheri Zone, Bardiya
District, Madhuban municipality.
 Area: 2025 km2
 Population : male : 244,255, female : 247,058 and total population : 4,91,313
 Co-ordinates: 28̊ 4859.99̎ N: 80̊ 28 59.99̎ S
 Climate: Tropical climate, Max and Min temperatures are 42̊ and 20̊ with 1000-2500mm annual
rainfall.
2. Information Collection:
The program will be carried out in all schools of Madhuban municipality in Bardiya District.
 Primary information
By using survey based on standard questionnaire, information will be collected. We will organize the
program in all school level during seven days and village level with drama about drug abuse. 200 household
including drug abuser youth and students within Madhuban municipality selected through systematic
random sampling to roughly sketch the status of drug abuse.
Focus group discussion and key informant interview will be conducted in order to obtain the detailed
information about the drug abuse status.
 Secondary information
Most of the data were collected from local and national journal published till 2017.
2. Key informant selection:
Key informants were those who are knowledgeable about the issue of alcohol and drugs. They are:
Community leaders, Local government/administration, School teachers, Health personnel, Anti-
alcohol/drug activists.
4. Interview:
A structured interview method will be used for collection information from drug abuser based on set of
questionnaire.

EXPECTED OUTPUTS:
1. The drug abuse status of the community will be assessed,
2. The rate of drug consumption will be decreased,
3. The criminal activities caused by drug abuse will be decreased.
4. Health of people will be improved

BENEFICIARIES:

 Primary beneficiaries: Local people, youth, students and drug abuser of Madhuban Municipality,
Bardiya.
 Secondary beneficiaries: Rehabititional centers, Local administration.
 Tertiary beneficiaries: Government, NGO’S, INGO related with drug abuse.

Scope and limitation of Program:

The program will reduce the current status of drug abuse and improve the drug abuse condition in
Madhuban Municipality by making people aware on it.
 Due to lack of time and money, it is confined only in a Madhuban municipality of the Bardiya
district.
 Sampling of the respondent is limited.
 The program is confined in school level.
