Dorian Gray & Sibyl Vane

Introduction
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a
clanging cymbal.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor
others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight
in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails; Love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire,
like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all
the wealth of one’s house for love, it would be utterly scorned.

Antecedents
Dorian Grey was a man perfect for the eyes of a lot people, a man young and beautiful. He could have
found the love in somewhere better but he believed to be fallen in love of Sibyl Vane a young actress of a
theatre poor.
Sibyl Vane only saw to Dorian like a spectator more, she never met the way’s Dorian, she preferred to
leave her miserable life and she could know more than of characters allow. She thought that the life was
all the plays. She only was a girl that didn’t know anything about the true life and she thought to be in
love of a fairy tale’s prince, handsome, rich and apparently friendly.

Development
In fact Dorian was falling in love of art that Sibyl interpret at different characters, because if he really
loves her, he would never have left her.
Dorian showed his true personality something that himself didn’t know of this existence and the
consequence was change his life impeccable for a new life full of corruption, bitterness, hatred,
insecurities and fears. Large part of all was caused by Henry Wotton who wanted experience the life that
he probably never had and this influence was terrible for Dorian because destroyed his life forever.
Dorian considered all the words that Henry said, maybe because Dorian saw to Harry like a father figure
and he believed that the Henry’s experience would lead for a good way and when Dorian saw the
contempt’s Harry to Sibyl and Sibyl’s poor performance because she was nervous, Dorian decided finish
the little romance with her.
After Dorian felt remorse for Sibyl’s death for a moment but he try forget it and he showing as hard man
and superficial.

Conclusion
The true love does not allow the influence of others or appearances. Dorian obviously wasn’t fall in love
to Sibyl, he was in love for the Sibyl’s starring, the way she thought was the world, and she was fall in
love with the image of a man apparently based on the plays she had starred.
This thematic that Oscar Wilde write about the love is a thematic actual because always has been the
loves superficial which are not true loves.
