一、【短文导读】Overview
这篇文章是关于李光耀为了自己的身份而奋斗的经历。 在小时候,他在英语环境中长
大。 但是,他在国外留学遇到认识的身份。 李光耀认识到要拥有自己的身份和文化,
他必须学会用母语写作和沟通。 从此,李光耀成为发展之父,通过双语政策,使新加
坡成为发展国。
This article is about Jack Ma, a successful entrepreneur in China who has
shown courage in different aspects of his life At young stage, he started to
learn English only to mock his father. However, his courage to learn English
allow him to communicate with foreigner and travel overseas has made him
aware the importance of international platform. A trip to America exposed
him to the world of internet and then, he started Alibaba Company.

About the languages, Lee Kuan Yew's growth experience made him understand
two things: English is now the world's most common language of all ethnic
groups. English is not only a common language of international occasions,
but also the language to seek knowledge to better know the world. If he only
knew English and do not understand mandarin, then he will be out of his own
cultural roots, loss of cultural identity and sense of belonging。

1936 年,一个十三岁的华裔少年以优异的成绩进入当时新加坡最好的英校莱佛士书院
(Raffles Institution)【1】。在校期间,他的数学和科学成绩都很好,英语更是出类
拔萃【2】,在剑桥高级文凭考试中,不仅夺得全校第一,更是新加坡和马来西亚的榜首。

承;大家求同又存异,为国家社会的稳定和繁荣提供最好、最坚实的基础。

[Essay]: Letter of Motivation to Learn Dual-language

阿里,阿高和穆图来自不同种族,进入华校。 他们说不同的语言。 阿里说马


来语,阿高说华语,穆图说泰米尔语。 他们来自不同的文化背景与语言。 他
们需要在学校说英语,相互沟通。 同时,他们每个人都不会忽视自己的母语。
如果你是李光耀,写下一封信,激励他们用英语来沟通。
字数约 100 – 200 字。

Ali, Ah Kao and Muthu are from different races and entered a Chinese
medium school. They speak different languages. Ali speaks Malay, Ah
Kao speaks Mandarin and Muthu speaks Tamil. They come from different
background and speaks their own mother tongue since young. They need
to speak English in school to communicate with each other. At the same
time, each of them do not wish to neglect their own mother tongue.
If you are Lee Kuan Yew, write a letter to motivate them to speak and
write well in English and communicate with each other.

所谓人“不怕迟,只怕站“不要怕学得太迟,只有你肯学, 希望就在明天。希望你们
可以在这所英校好好学习英文。
How are you, Ali, Ah Kao and Muthu? I am Lee Kuan Yew, the father of Singapore.
Yesterday when I was giving talk in your school, I noticed three of you do not able to
communicate with each other in English. Each of you speaks your own mother tongue. It
made me reminisced my past when I was young, I was unable to speak in my mother tongue
but only in English. Since young, I have been speaking English at home but one day, I was
being asked to learn mandarin in a Chinese medium school. It made me felt agony and later
on, I switched to an English medium school. However, when I grow up, I realized if I only
know English and not mandarin, I drift further and further apart from my culture of origin,
losing acknowledgement from people of the same race and sense of belonging. Thus, I started

to learn mandarin. To implement dual-language policy, I put aside the ease of giving speeches
to public in my well-versed English and tried to practice using mandarin language. My concern
to introduce the bilingualism is for citizens to thrive in economy by the international language
mastery and at the same time, the identity and culture is retained through mother tongue
languages. English not only act as the key to open up treasures of knowledge, it also opens up
my perspective to the outside world and this cannot be achieved if I do not know English during
the past. I hope you do not give up on the chances of learning English, As the proverbs saying,
“it is never too late to learn”. I believe you can learn English properly in this school.
