DEPARTMENT PROFILE

The Department of Economics started right from the inception of the college in

1981 with Telugu as the medium of instruction. In the beginning the college was

located in the girl’s high school building near old Bus Stop. As accommodation

was insufficient, it was changed to present building and the college was named as

Government Degree College for women, Sangaredy. B.A in Urdu medium was

introduced in the year 2006 – 2007 with permitted strength of 40 students.

At present the Department is in the main building. The wing in which the

Department of Economics exists is named as “Prof. Amarthya Kumar Sen”. The

The Economics Department started under the able guidance of Sri.Ramakantham

who hard for the development of the department. The following faculty members

worked in the department during the period mentioned below.

1) Sri.M.Ramakantham worked from 01-12-1981 to 31-07-1987 & from

22-06-1991 to 17-06-1997.

2) Sri.Syed Khaja Moinuddin worked from 14-11-1983 to 22-06-1991.

3) Smt.A.Vija Kumari worked from 10-09-1987 to 2012

4) Smt.Dr. S.P Krishnaveni worked from 04-02-2012 to till date

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Most of the students are from rural background and the parents are mostly

illiterates having income less than 36,000 per annum but still the students are

enthusiastic to get educated. The department results are remarkably high compared

to university average results. The Department of Economics enjoys a good

reputation in Medak District. The academic performance of the students in the last

three academic years is as follows:-

There is an increase trend in pass percentage, Distinctions, First class which

indicates that increasing efforts of the faculty resulted in the increase of results.

As the college is affiliated to Osmania University, common core syllabus

framed by the University is followed. The paper particulars are as follows.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DEPARTMENT

I CURRICULAR ASPECTS:-
The Department of Economics is following the curriculum decided by the

Board of Studies Economics of Osmania University, Hyderabad. Some aspects of

curriculum are being presented below.

The annual curricular plan is normally designed to develop interest,

understanding and skills to foster all round growth and development of the student.

It is designed to develop critical thinking, memory, imagination and analytical

ability.

TEACHING PRACTIES

ANNUAL ACADEMIC PLAN:-


In the beginning of the year the syllabus is divided into curricular and co-

curricular activities. Curricular activities include month wise distribution of

syllabus showing additional input/value addition, activity and hours allotted. Co-

curricular activity is also mentioned showing activity and hours allotted. This is

given to the students at the beginning of the academic year.

The curricular activities are shown in annual curricular plan. In the beginning of

the academic year, every faculty member of economics splits the activities as per

the working days available during the academic year.

TEACHING DIARIES:-

Prescribed diary is supplied by the Osmania University to record the activities of

the lecturer. It is regular practice of faculty member’s year to write daily activities

on the same day. It is reviewed by the head of the institution once a month and

minutes are recorded on the same day.

SYNOPSIS:-

The faculty member is preparing synopsis well in advance as per the distribution of

units of the subject. The running notes are dictated after the completion of the

topic.

REVIEW OF THE SYLLABUS:-


On the basis of teaching diaries and annual curricular plan, the Principal reviews

the syllabus and other academic activities. The same information is mentioned in

the minutes.

ADDITIONAL INPUTS:-

It is regular practice in the department to collect clippings from newspapers,

journals and magazines. The paper clipping are affixed on notice board and the

copy of the clippings are field in the folder. One student from each class is given

duty to record headlines in a notebook and read it out in the class to create

awareness.

II TWACHING LEARRING AND EVALUATION:-


The traditional lecture method is followed to impart knowledge,

supplemented by so many learning practices. The main objectives behind these

methods are to enhance knowledge horizon and skills of the students. Apart from

the lecture method the other learning practices are as follows:-

FIELD TRIPS:-

To gain practical knowledge and learn the subject matter perfectly the

Department of Economics organizes field visits to organizations. The following

field visits have been arranged for B.A students.

CLASS ROOM SEMINARS:-

The Department of Economics organizes seminar for B.A students on

various relevant and important topics both curricular and co-curricular aspects. The

BRIDGE COURSE:-

The Department of Economics organizes a bridge course to non-arts students


who joined the first year at the beginning of academic year. The non-arts students
are identified at the entry level. Separate syllabus is framed for this purpose. This
coaching helps them to get acquainted with the subject well.

CHARTS AND MAPS:-

They are used for enhancing the understanding the subject matter and
charts are usually prepared by the students with the guidance of the lecturer.

TEACHING LEARNING AND EVALUATION:-

The Department of Economics is unique in the teaching of Economics


subject to the students of B.A. The details of teaching practices are presented
below:-

a) Lecture Method: - It is conventional and age old practice in teaching.


It is adopted for theory subjects. Interaction of students is solicited during
teaching sessions.
b) Analytical Presentation: - Subject matter is presented in logical
order by which knowledge can be enhanced. Seminars, group discussions
are also conducted.
c) Audio – Visual Methods: - The students of B.A. view the telecast of
Mana T.V. programmers as per the schedule of the SAPNET.
d) Learning: - Learning is the quality practice in education. The department
of Economics is adopting feasible methods for imparting of subject
knowledge. Here some of the learning methods of economics department are
given below:-
 Teaching Models: - For easy learning some models are prepared
by the students at the instruction of the lectures in the department.
These models are displayed in the classrooms for easy learning which
helps weak students considerably.
 Quiz: - Subject quiz is conducted to the students. This method of
learning enhances subject knowledge and competitive spirit. This
helps both fast and slow learners.
 Field Visits: - To gain practical knowledge and to learn the
subject, the Department of Economics has organized field visits to the
following places.

The staff of the department accompanied the students for explaining these
activities.

Linkages:-

To give practical knowledge, fous is given on interaction with outside


organization. The Department of Economics has entered into linkages with these
institutions.

Evaluation:-

The department of economics has adopted evaluation of academic activity.

Assignment: -

Each student is asked to submit assignments on a given topic and the assignments
are evaluated and grading given.

Unit tests and slip tests: -

Conducting tests is a regular practice in the department. Three unit tests are
conducted for every class in a year. Topic wise and unit wise tests are conducted at
regular intervals. Pre-final examinations fully prepare the students to face final
O.U.Exam. Award list is prepared and suggestions for improvement are given to
rectify their mistakes. Some small gifts are given to the toppers for encouragement.
Fast learners are given study projects and slow learners are exposed to remedial
coaching.

Remedial Coaching: -
After analyzing the unit test marks, the weak students are selected for remedial
coaching. Intensive coaching and dictation of important points are the main tools
of remedial coaching.

Faculty Improvement: -

The concerned lecturer tries to develop her subjects by adopting academic learning
through various techniques like attending workshops conducted by the University.

III RESEARCH, CONSULTANCY AND

EXTENSION:-

The lecture in charge of Economics did her PhD from Osmania University
of Hyderabad. On the topic of my topic. She was also published one paper.

Workshop/seminars/refresher and orientation courses/trainings attended:-

Attending refresher courses seminars boost the knowledge horizon of the


lecturer. Details of the seminars attended are given below:-

1) Refresher Course in Economics ASC, O.U. from 31/05/1982 to 19/06/1982.


Orientation Course ASC O.U. from 02/05/1988 to 29/05/1988.
2) Refresher Course in Economics D.H.E. Hyderabad from 06/02/1991 to
15/02/1991.
3) Refresher Course in Economics 2 ASC, O.U, Hyd. From 22/02/1999 to
16/03/1999.
4) Refresher course in Research Methodology ASC, University of Hyderabad.
From 17/11/1999 to 09/12/1999.

The Department is preserving model question paper of O.U.Annual and


supplementary exams.

Research Clubs:-

Research clubs of the Department consists of few students who some survey
relating to the economic educational and social background nearby villages.

Consultancy Services:-

The Department of economics is extending consultancy service to the staff,


students and community of Sangareddy areas.

The details are as follows:-

 Income Tax Consultancy:- Checking the income tax assessment forms free
of cost. Saral and form 16 is checked.
 Nowadays everyone likes to invest in shares and some suggestions are given
to them.

Guest lecturers in neighboring colleges:-


1) Guest lecturer given at Government Degree College, Patanchrvu
2) Guest lecturer given at Government Junior College, SRD
3) Guest lecturer given at SWR Degree College, Budera

IV INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEARNING

RESOURCES:-

A separate staffroom is allotted in the main building. It is adequate and well


ventilated. Minimum facilities like chair, table, and almirah are provided.

Departmental Library:-

The Department of Economics is maintaining a separate library for students


and staff from 2004-05. About 50 books are there in the library relating to Micro,
Macro, Public Finance and Indian economy. Some books relate to personality
development. Staff and students are allowed to use the books in the library.
Separate issue register is maintained for the same.

Press Clippings:-

Students are asked to bring cuttings relating to subject from local newspaper.
Two students from each class record day to day headlines and read it out in the
classroom.

Class Rooms:-
There are spacious classrooms, blackboards, platform and sufficient
furniture. All classrooms are sufficiently ventilated.

V STUDENT SUPPORT AND PROGRESSION:-

The Department of Economics is paying more attention towards support


services on par with academic activities. This helps to develop positive thinking
and optimistic attitude.

Ward Counseling:-

Ward counseling improves the personality of the ward in many ways.


Bio-data with photo is taken from each student which comprises the socio-
economic background of the student. The first year students are guided properly as
to how to adjust with the degree college atmosphere and how to utilize the time
properly.

The Department encourages students to pursue higher studies. The students


are informed about regular and distant education facilities.

Competitive Career Guidance:-


The Department is encouraging students to appear for competitive exams
like APPSC, UPSC, B Ed, DSC and BSRB. Tips were given to the students in that
aspect.

Track with old students (Alumini):-

The Department of Economics is maintaining track with Alumini. They are


frequent visitors to the department and take our advice for career planning.
Financial help is also given to poor students to the extent possible.

M.O.Us:-

The Department of Economics has entered into M.O.U.s with the department in the
neighboring colleges.

VI GOVERNENCE AND LEADERSHIP:-

There are several types of activities which are undertaken by the department.

Departmental Meeting with the Principal:-

There is only one member in the department and the lecturer consults the
Principal regarding to academic matters, evaluation, guest lectures and field visits.
The minutes are recorded from time to time.
Community Services:-

Awareness programmes are undertaken by the Department of Economics.


Students are asked to villages and campaign for the healthy habits like clean and
green, hygiene and to increase savings and increase in income earnings.

VII INNOVATIVE PRACTICES:-

The following healthy practices are followed in the Department.

 Special Study Hours: -


Under the supervision of the lecturer, students are encouraged to study and
clear their doubts.
 Debates: -
To enrich communication skills, debates are organized and the students are
encouraged to participate with enthusiasm. Suggestions are given to the
student. Some of the students have also won laurels in the competitions of
essay writing, elocution, competitions held at the district level.
 Poor aid fund: -
To help the poor students the department in charge is helping whenever the
occasion arises. Normally it is in the form of cash.
 Marketing: -
As most of the books are not available in Sanga Reddy, the in-charge of the
department helps the students by supplying the books after purchasing them
in Hyderabad.

Coin Exhibition Action Plan for 2015-16:-


The Department of Economics prepares action plan for every year. In the
action plan for the next academic year the following items are included.

o One Workshop

Propose to organize guest and extension lecture on soft skill

o Propose to organize guest lecture on personality development.


o Three unit tests and a pre-final
o Classroom seminars
o Debates and discussion
o Paper presentations
o Quiz competitions in the month of November
o Celebrate human rights day, Vivekananda Day, consumer club day and to
conduct essay and elocution competitions
