A to Z of Health Planning

Delivering The Health Care Of The Future

Healthcare requires serious specialists with no tolerance for failure.

Healthcare buildings need to be appropriately briefed, correctly

designed, future-proofed and made affordable for owners, operators
and patients. Hospitals must be configured for the required
specialisations, equipped correctly and operated safely. They must
respond to their context including physical environment, population
mix, models of care and local custom.

Healthcare is too important to be regarded as Real Estate

Development. Professionals in this field must be immersed in
Healthcare issues, follow every progress, live and breathe it every
day. Learning on the job or simply asking the client “what would
you like” is not a substitute for expert knowledge and leadership.
This is a field in which no single member of the client organisation
is likely to know what is required for a fully functioning hospital.
Therefore this is a field where the client looks to the team of
experts to determine what is really required, give correct advice
as well as excellent solutions. TAHPI is such a team.
“Understanding the complexities

WITHIN BUDGET
We are conscious of the commercial aspects for the
healthcare projects. Cost effective solutions balance
both the capital outlay together with the long-term life
cycle costing. We work closely with experienced
quantity surveyors specialised in hospital projects
to control the cost through each project.

ADDED VALUE
TAHPI adds value to projects through years of
experience and understanding in healthcare. Our
solutions provide efficient planning, minimal structure,

Methodology
Health Service Planning
Service Planning starts with the Needs Analysis for
health services within a defined population catchment.
Statistical analysis is combined with planning skills
to identify several directions to proceed. TAHPI’s
methodology will guide the client through the
development of the service plan.

Briefing
Briefing (or Functional Program) is a highly specialised
field. Preparation of a brief in healthcare projects is
unlike any commercial or residential project requiring
consultation with a variety of interested parties.
TAHPI’s experienced team is skilled in translating the
client’s service plan into a set of coherent and medically
workable briefs.

Master Planning
The creation of the Master Plan will reflect the long
term strategy for the development of the project by

Macquarie University Hospital

Macquarie University Hospital is the first university

private hospital and one of the most hi-tech hospitals
in Australia. This private hospital specialises in
Cardiac and Neurosurgery as well as Cancer Care.
It incorporates 14 operating theatres, a 180-bed
inpatient unit and 4 Radiotherapy bunkers. The
hot floor at MUH incorporates 20 modern isolated
ICU rooms and the operating suite includes several
hybrid operating rooms designed for CT and MRI
integration. The cancer care facilities are designed to
provide both chemotherapy and radiotherapy
treatments as well as Gamma knife surgery.

14
Australia

St George Hospital Emergency Department

St George Hospital is a major teaching hospital of the University

of New South Wales and is a tertiary referral hospital in the
state. This 3500sqm development was challenging, requiring
the demolition and re-provision of the hospital’s engineering
and pharmacy services in order to make room for the new
emergency department. The design allows for the future
expansion of 7 levels of existing acute inpatient services
over the new operational ED.

The St George Emergency Department provides a 12 bed

paediatric precinct, a 14 bed adult fast track treatment area
with 4 associated consult rooms, 8 bay ambulance parking, 5
bay triage, 5 resuscitation bays and 32 acute treatment beds.
There is also a 12 bed short stay unit, 2 bed mental health
assessment area with consult rooms and a 6 bed psychiatric
emergency care centre.
15
Australia

Norwest Private Hospital

Norwest Private Hospital is Healthscope’s NSW flagship

private hospital. This hospital includes 200 single
bed rooms, 11 operating rooms, all digital, ICU, CCU
and Emergency Department with 6 treatment bays,
resuscitation areas and 5 bed EMU. The Maternity
services include 7 LDR Birthing rooms and a dedicated
maternity ward supported by general and special care
nurseries.

Key concerns present in the project were recurrent cost

savings and environmentally sustainable design. Methods
adopted to address these issues were water recycling,
solar hot water, hybrid chillers and solar performance.

16
Australia

Norwest Private has been expanding even before the

completion of the initial building work in 2009. The latest
stage of the development has seen the design and planning
of an additional 5 operating rooms, one of which is a hybrid
theatre, 7 additional ICU bays and 55 inpatient beds. Plans
for expansion of the emergency department, including a
new fast track facility, are underway. Support facilities,
including the catering unit and administration have been
expanded to support the increased service load.

The design of Norwest Private Hospital will achieve the

equivalent of a Green Building Council of Australia 4 star
certification.

17
Australia

Lake Macquarie Private Hospital

Lake Macquarie Private Hospital has been expanding

since 2010 and is now fully equipped with day surgery,
operating theatres, oncology department and intensive
care unit. The latest addition is a 30 bed inpatient ward
delivered entirely as modular, prefabricated components.
This innovative approach lowered the cost per bed
and construction timeframe of the project while
providing outstanding design and high quality patient
accommodation.

18
Australia

Kareena Private Hospital

The refurbishment and expansion of Kareena Private

Hospital required TAHPI to plan and design a new 36-bed
inpatient ward, a 9-bed intensive care unit, an additional
operating room and required support facilities, a coronary
care unit, an oncology unit with 5 chemotherapy bays and
professional suites with waiting and reception areas,
6 consultation rooms, meeting rooms and a pathology
laboratory.

In the maternity unit the neonatal nursery was refurbished

Tweed Heads Hospital

This project was a major redevelopment of the existing Tweed Heads

Hospital campus with the design and construction of 4 new operating
rooms, day surgery and endoscopy facilities, expanded CSSD, a 7-bed
ICU and 5 new inpatient wards. The design also provided a complete
birthing suite with 4 labour/delivery/recovery rooms to provide the
most up to date model of care to expectant mothers.

Community health and community mental health amenities were also

provided and the redevelopment integrated an acute inpatient mental
health unit in a mainstreamed setting. All building and back of house
services were augmented to support the expanded facility. All of these
facilities were designed in addition to the refurbishment of the existing
180-bed facility. In 2015 TAHPI designed the new masterplan for the
next 20 years of Tweed Heads Hospital, doubling the capacity to over
300 beds.

23

Modular Hospitals

TAHPI is bringing a new brand of thinking, backed by cutting edge

technology, to the healthcare sector. It will change the way healthcare
infrastructure is designed & delivered for the industry in the future.

Combining unique pre-fabricated modular construction with

technologically superior healthcare design expertise, TAHPI is set to
significantly reduce the cost & time required to deliver a healthcare
project.

Soft Modular
The “Soft Modular” approach is about compartmentalisation
of the knowledge of healthcare design into units of planning
from departments and services to rooms, content, finishes and
specifications. We feature 50 Functional Units of planning and 500
unique room types; fully specified, pre-designed and engineered
with multiple combinations to create hospitals of any scale. These
raw components form quick and out-of-the-box design modules that
comply with the relevant standards and guidelines.

58
Hard Modular
The modular designs are pre-fabricated in components and delivered
through the industrial production and efficiency of scale. The concept
replaces “construction” with “transportation” and “assembly”. The
pre-fabricated units would be fully functional at the time of delivery
including all medical and non-medical equipment, furniture, software
and automation systems. Simply put, these hospitals are delivered like
large passenger aircraft differentiated by capacity and model. They
come with a warranty like any industrial product.

Modular Hospitals
TAHPI has a large catalogue of pre-designed hospitals from just 16 beds
to 500 beds, ready to adopt and order.

TAHPI also offers a Modularisation services where the client’s own

design is optimised and then fully delivered and installed as a true
turnkey product.
