BIS recognises ERDA as an approved Test laboratory for Smart

Meter testing.
Electrical Research and Development Association (ERDA) has reached another
milestone in its journey towards excellence. BIS has now recognised ERDA as an
approved Test Laboratory for Smart Meter testing as per IS 16444: 2015.
The Smart Meters are a composite unit with static energy meter, communication
module and control element. The smart meter also will have Time of Day registers. A
smart meter will have functions like measurement, computation, event capturing,
storing, communication and control. The smart meter would be required to provide
data and information that are needed by various smart grid applications.
The Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) has recently published a Standard on smart
meters. This Standard, IS 16444:2015 "A.C static direct connected watthour smart
meter class 1 and 2 - specification". ERDA is one among very few laboratories
recognized by BIS for conducting this testing.
Ministry of Power has recently announced the Government’s vision to rollout smart
metering on fast track for customers with a monthly consumption of 500kWh and
above in Phase-1 by December 2017 and for customers with monthly consumption of
200kWh and above in Phase-2 by December 2019.
In view of the massive investment required for smart metering or Advance Metering
Infrastructure (AMI) to cover about 50 million customers in next 4 years, the BIS
recognized Smart Meter testing facility at ERDA will play a major role in the accelerated
development of smart grid technologies in the Indian power sector.
