DON’T feed your baby directly from a jar. This can encourage bacteria growth. Your
baby’s saliva can make the food watery.

DO learn to read your baby’s signals. Feed your baby when you see these cues: your
baby eagerly swallows every bite, follows the spoon with her eyes and becomes
impatient if you’re not fast enough!

DON’T continue feeding your baby if you see these cues: she turns her head away,
refuses to open her mouth or cries when you try feeding.

DO wait three to five days to add each new food to your baby’s diet. This is so you
can detect any allergic reaction your baby might have to a certain food.

DON’T feed cereals or other solid foods through a bottle, unless your health care
professional directs you to do so. Cereal in the bottle may cause your baby to gag

DO be patient with yourself and your baby. Remember that tomorrow is always

Starting Solid Foods

Starting Solid Foods Is My Baby Ready for Solid Foods?

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that you can begin feeding solid

beginners and older foods when your baby is about 4 to 6 months old. At this age, babies learn to use
their tongue to move food to the back of their mouth and their mouth reflexes are
developed enough to let them swallow solid foods. Since
this is a whole new stage of feeding, you probably
have lots of questions. The information here About

(and potentially messy) situation. Here are some
helpful tips to make a smooth transition.

•At first, try solid foods for only one feeding each day. If your baby won’t eat it,
try introducing it again in a few days.

•Choose a time of day that is the least stressful for you, and a time when your
baby is not too hungry. Many parents find mid-morning or mid-afternoon an
ideal time.

16
Single-Grain Cereals

Single-Grain Cereals Start with Cereal

When introducing solid foods, start with single-ingredient foods first to check for
allergies. Most pediatricians recommend starting with a single-grain cereal, like Beech-
beginners and older Nut® Rice Cereal, because it’s easier for babies to digest.

• Start with a small amount and increase gradually. Even a teaspoonful is enough
for some beginners. Begin with a small amount of cereal (1 to 2 tablespoons
of cereal with 4 to 5 tablespoons of breast milk, formula or water) and
gradually increase it.

• Babies usually respond better to the first feedings of cereal if it is thin rather
than thick.

• Put a small amount of warm cereal on the tip of a rubber-coated spoon and
place it in your baby’s mouth.

• Don’t be surprised if at first the food comes right back out of your baby’s
mouth. Your baby has been nursing, and the natural instinct is to use the same
mouth and tongue movements, which is what causes some of the food to be
pushed out of his or her mouth. Starting solid foods helps your baby transition
from a totally liquid diet of breast milk or formula so your baby may not
swallow much at first.

• As your baby becomes accustomed to eating from a spoon, you may make
the cereal thicker and increase the amount. And, you can offer two to three
feedings a day.

No More Messy Cereal Boxes:

Beech-Nut® cereals are unique versus any other cereal available because
of the innovative packaging design – the Easy Pour™ container. The Easy
Pour container design has an easy pour spout with a twist off cap, allow-
ing for easy opening, pouring, closing, and storing – a great and simple
way to use and store your infant’s cereal!

• Milk and other dairy products Evening prepared cereal (1/4 cup)

Raspberries, cranberries and blueberries have low allergic potential and are rarely the cause
of allergies. Fresh strawberries can sometimes cause food reactions in babies. Cooked
strawberries, on the other hand, usually do not. That’s because heat pasteurization destroys
the substance responsible for reactions. So, Beech-Nut includes strawberries in our Stage
2® combination foods. Babies are usually ready for Stage 2 at about 6 months.

Some potentially high-allergen foods usually not fed to babies are fish, shellfish, peanuts and
tree nuts. Any food can cause an allergy. Check with your health care professional if your
baby shows any sign of an allergic reaction. But remember, starting with Beech-Nut Stage 1
foods is a convenient and healthful way to check for any food allergies your baby may have.

What Does an Allergic Reaction Look Like?

Food allergy reactions vary greatly. Symptoms can include difficulty in breathing, constipa-
tion, bloating, gassiness, diarrhea, vomiting, unusual daytime crankiness, skin rash, coughing,
runny nose or watery eyes. If you see anything unusual in your baby when you add a new
food, call your health care professional immediately. Introducing just one new food every
three to five days can help you detect a food that triggers an allergic reaction.

® Are you noticing lots of changes in your baby’s hunger and feeding patterns? Now
that your baby is eating single-ingredient foods regularly, he or she probably wants
more. You can add combination foods to your baby’s diet for extra variety and
flavor after you have checked the ingredient list. If your baby has been sensitive to
any single food and it is part of a combination food, avoid this combination for now.

“If a baby makes a funny face, it means she doesn’t like the food.” False.
Your baby will need time to adjust to a new taste. Use the new food for
your baby’s first bite of solids each day for a few days. The first day your
baby may make a face and spit the food out. The second day your
baby will usually swallow the first bite but may refuse the
second. But if you continue this pattern, your baby will
probably develop a taste for new foods – even strong-

Can My Baby Drink “Regular” Milk? Not Yet!

Cow’s milk is not recommended during your baby’s first 12 months
because cow’s milk doesn’t have enough iron to meet your baby’s

may interfere with your baby’s iron absorption. Talk to your health care
professional before giving your baby cow’s milk.

DHA PLUS

Leading-Edge Nutrition Introducing Beech-Nut® DHA PLUS™

DHA (docosahexanoic acid) is a fatty acid found naturally in breast milk and DHA-
enhanced formula that aids in the development of an infant’s brain, eyes and nervous
system. This is your baby’s main source of DHA during this time.

That’s why Beech-Nut® has developed DHA PLUS™ baby foods – a true advance in
infant nutrition. Now you can make sure your baby is getting the right levels of DHA
as she transitions from breast milk to table food. DHA continues to support your ba-
by’s brain and eye development. And added prebiotics, which are a natural source of
soluble fiber, support your baby’s digestive heath by promoting the growth of “good”
bacteria. We use an all-natural vegetable source of DHA. Our DHA source is Life’s
DHA, the same DHA used in 100% of fortified baby formula. Once you introduce
single ingredient Rice Cereal and your baby shows no food allergies, you may want to
try DHA PLUS Rice Cereal. Read the labels and introduce it gradually.

When Curiosity is King

Your little explorer is ready for more substantial meals. Toddlers, 1 – 3 years old, will
consume about 40 calories for each inch of their height each day.

After about 12 months, your toddler’s appetite may drop suddenly. It may seem as if
your toddler should eat more because he seems more active, but his growth rate has
slowed, and he really doesn’t require as much food now. Toddlers have small stomachs
so three meals and two snacks each day is about right. Of course, your toddler may
want to eat a lot one day and almost nothing the next. As long as you’re providing
well-balanced meals on a regular schedule and your toddler is eating
them most of the time, you should be fine.

Juice & Water

Does Your Baby Need Extra Water?
Beech-Nut® Spring Water with Added Fluoride can quench your baby’s thirst and
help build strong teeth before you can see them. You may use Beech-Nut water to
prepare cereal and to dilute juice. But, juices and water should not be a substitute for
breast milk or formula. If your baby is not yet eating solid foods, breast milk and prop-
Mild & Natural erly prepared infant formula provide enough water. Ask your health care professional
before giving your baby any extra water in the first 4 months. If your baby has diarrhea
or is vomiting, consult your health care professional before providing any more water.
Do not use fluoride drops if using fluoridated water.

Starting Juices
How Much Juice Should I Give My Baby?
Fruit juices provide calories, Vitamin C, carbohydrates and
essential minerals. At about 6 months, your baby will be
ready for juices. Treat a juice just like a new solid food –
begin with a single-ingredient juice such as Beech-Nut
Apple or White Grape. Dilute 2 ounces of the juice
with 2 ounces of water for three to five days to check
for allergies. The American Academy of Pediatrics
recommends no more than 4 ounces per day, and
remember, too much juice may cause diarrhea.
