their tongue to move food to the back of their mouth and their mouth reflexes are
developed enough to let them swallow solid foods. Since

(and potentially messy) situation. Here are some
helpful tips to make a smooth transition.
•At first, try solid foods for only one feeding each day. If your baby won’t eat it,
try introducing it again in a few days.
•Choose a time of day that is the least stressful for you, and a time when your
baby is not too hungry. Many parents find mid-morning or mid-afternoon an
ideal time.
16
Single-Grain Cereals
• Start with a small amount and increase gradually. Even a teaspoonful is enough
for some beginners. Begin with a small amount of cereal (1 to 2 tablespoons
of cereal with 4 to 5 tablespoons of breast milk, formula or water) and
gradually increase it.
• Babies usually respond better to the first feedings of cereal if it is thin rather
than thick.
• Put a small amount of warm cereal on the tip of a rubber-coated spoon and
place it in your baby’s mouth.
• Don’t be surprised if at first the food comes right back out of your baby’s
mouth. Your baby has been nursing, and the natural instinct is to use the same
mouth and tongue movements, which is what causes some of the food to be
pushed out of his or her mouth. Starting solid foods helps your baby transition
from a totally liquid diet of breast milk or formula so your baby may not
swallow much at first.
• As your baby becomes accustomed to eating from a spoon, you may make
the cereal thicker and increase the amount. And, you can offer two to three
feedings a day.

Stage 1 ® Once your baby has tried a single-grain cereal, and when you’re both ready, you can

Beech-Nut Stage 1®
The Truth About Food Allergies
Introducing your baby to one new food for three to five days at a time is a good way to
check for allergic reactions. That’s why Beech-Nut® Stage 1® foods are single-ingredient How Hungry is My Baby?
foods. Also, all of our cereals are soy-free (with the exception of DHA PLUS™ cereals) Every baby is different. Yours will let you know how much she needs to eat and
as soy is a common allergen. what she likes or doesn’t. She’ll also eat different amounts on different days. Create
your own menus, like this sample — after you test for food allergies.
Raspberries, cranberries and blueberries have low allergic potential and are rarely the cause
of allergies. Fresh strawberries can sometimes cause food reactions in babies. Cooked
strawberries, on the other hand, usually do not. That’s because heat pasteurization destroys
the substance responsible for reactions. So, Beech-Nut includes strawberries in our Stage
2® combination foods. Babies are usually ready for Stage 2 at about 6 months.
Some potentially high-allergen foods usually not fed to babies are fish, shellfish, peanuts and
tree nuts. Any food can cause an allergy. Check with your health care professional if your
baby shows any sign of an allergic reaction. But remember, starting with Beech-Nut Stage 1
foods is a convenient and healthful way to check for any food allergies your baby may have.
Stage 2
Introducing Variety
® Are you noticing lots of changes in your baby’s hunger and feeding patterns? Now
that your baby is eating single-ingredient foods regularly, he or she probably wants
more. You can add combination foods to your baby’s diet for extra variety and
flavor after you have checked the ingredient list. If your baby has been sensitive to
any single food and it is part of a combination food, avoid this combination for now.

Beech-Nut ™
After about 12 months, your toddler’s appetite may drop suddenly. It may seem as if
your toddler should eat more because he seems more active, but his growth rate has
slowed, and he really doesn’t require as much food now. Toddlers have small stomachs
so three meals and two snacks each day is about right. Of course, your toddler may
want to eat a lot one day and almost nothing the next. As long as you’re providing
well-balanced meals on a regular schedule and your toddler is eating
them most of the time, you should be fine.

Exploring Beverages
Starting Juices
How Much Juice Should I Give My Baby?
Fruit juices provide calories, Vitamin C, carbohydrates and
essential minerals. At about 6 months, your baby will be
ready for juices. Treat a juice just like a new solid food –
begin with a single-ingredient juice such as Beech-Nut
Apple or White Grape. Dilute 2 ounces of the juice
with 2 ounces of water for three to five days to check
for allergies. The American Academy of Pediatrics
recommends no more than 4 ounces per day, and
remember, too much juice may cause diarrhea.
46
Welcome Buying & Making Baby Food
You may ask, Is jarred baby food as good for my baby
as food I’d make myself?
Absolutely! Many parents like the idea of making their own baby food. But
often time is an issue, so prepared baby food becomes the answer.
