Mining Engineer

 prepare the layout of the mine development and the way the minerals are to be mined ascertaining extraction risks;
 consult with geologists and other engineers about the design, selection and provision of machines, facilities and systems
for mining, as well as infrastructure such as access roads, water and power supplies;
 oversee the construction of the mine and the installation of plant and equipment
 producing models or plans for possible mining sites
 planning and implementing extraction systems;
 plan and coordinate the employment of mining staff and equipment with regard to efficiency, safety and environmental
conditions
 using specialist computer applications to maximise planning and production
 managing construction projects
 ensuring that operations comply with health and safety requirements
 making sure that the equipment used is safe;
 make sure that mining regulations are observed, including the proper use and care of explosives, and the correct
ventilation to allow the removal of dust and gases
 costing and organising supplies.

Engineering Geologist

 Ensure that minerals are extracted from mines, pits and quarries in such a way that maximum profit is obtained with as
little damage to the environment as possible
 To work closely with the drill and blast engineers to determine the best way to blast all of the rock out of the pit floor
 Study and examine the minerals as they are extracted to assess their quality
 Analyse and interpret geological data
 Locate and estimate mineral ore deposits and prepare geological maps, charts and reports concerning mineral
extraction
 Identify risks for natural disasters such as rockslides and other geohazrds
 Collect samples of natural resources through drilling and other methods
 Communicate findings in the form of reports, meetings etc
 consult geological maps and aerial photographs to advise on site selection
 collate data and produce reports
 oversee the progress of specific contracts
 plan detailed field investigations by drilling and analysing samples of deposits/bedrock
 supervise site and ground investigations
 advise on and test a range of construction materials
 advise on problems such as subsidence, landlides, geo-hazards at the proposed strcutures
 manage staff, including other engineering geologists, geotechnical engineers, consultants and contractors
 attend professional conferences and represent the company or organisation at other events.
