TITLE: Information/Reference Services Manager

Reports to: Director


Status: Manager I – Staff – Professional – Non Exempt
Pay Grade: 8

General Summary: Plans, organizes, supervises and coordinates activities connected with
the selection, maintenance and operation of the Information/Reference Services staff,
adult/reference collections and adult programming.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Oversee the daily operation of the library’s Information/Reference Services


department including the Public Access computers.

2. Supervising and helping to provide assistance to patrons in selecting, locating and


using materials and equipment.

3. Coordinates the selection, maintenance and promotion of the Adult and Reference
Collections including both print and non-print resources.

4. Responsible for planning, implementing and overseeing all aspects of Adult


programming.

5. Acts as the library liaison to two book discussion groups, leading the groups and
assisting in selecting and obtaining material.

6. Responsible for overseeing the planning and implementation of the Library’s


Outreach program.

7. Responsible for interviewing, scheduling, supervising, recommending for hire and


overall professional development of the Information/Reference Services staff.

8. Reviews and evaluates job performance and recommends appropriate personnel


action of the Information/Reference Services staff.

9. Monitor budget expenditures for all adult’s materials and programming.

10. Oversees Community Room and Sumner Room reservations and calendar.

11. Responsible for preparing monthly reports on activities of the


Information/Reference Services Department.

12. Resolves difficult customer problems and complaints.

13. Promotes good public relations for the department and the Library.
14. Serve on Library Committees when necessary.

15. Participates in professional organizations, conferences and continuing education


seminars to keep up to date on professional library practices as they relate to the
department and the library.

16. Attend quarterly staff meetings and conduct quarterly Department meetings

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Seeks grant opportunities for the Information/Reference Services Department as


needed.

2. Cooperating as a team member in performing any professional or non-


professional duties essential to the achievement of the library’s objectives

3. Participating in, collaborating with, and speaking to community organizations on


behalf of the library as appropriate.

4. Attend library and community meetings as necessary.

5. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

1. Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA Accredited college or university


or equivalent.

2. Indiana Public Librarian Certificate 2.

3. Minimum of 3 years of library experience which includes some supervisory


experience after completing the MLS.

Skills Required:

1. Extensive knowledge of the current library practices and ability to anticipate


future trends.

2. Skill in organizing, prioritizing, delegating, and providing multiple kinds of


services.

3. Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact and deal tactfully


with the public and library employees.
4. Ability to perform with independence, with actions and decisions subject to
review, approval or disapproval by the Library Director.

5. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

6. Ability to lead an effective meeting

7. Extensive knowledge of Evergreen Indiana Library system

8. Keep up to date and proficient with the technology as it relates to your position.

Working Conditions:

1. Normal office environment with little, if any, discomfort due to heat, dust, noise
and the like.

2. Occasional travel to various Library and community locations.
