A historic drought in Russia has
boosted the world price of wheat this
summer, and that has resulted in lo-
cal wheat prices rising here in Central
Michigan and much enthusiasm about
planting wheat this fall. Here are a few
tips and reminders to help you maxi-
mize the yield potential of your wheat
crop. Plant clean high quality wheat
seed. Laboratory testing for germina-
tion is a good assurance of the viability
of the seed. Seed that has been field in-
spected during its growing year helps
to ensure its varietal purity and that
it is free of seed-borne disease. Seed
treatment with a systemic fungicide
will add protection from many seed-
borne diseases.

My Girl USA is a program that
is not your “typical” beauty pag-
eant.
My Girl USA focuses on more
than outward appearances. They
require candidates to be communi-
ty involved, be of high moral char-
acter, involved in their school and
represent a healthy lifestyle.
Two girls who represent Mont-
calm County are Lauren Corwin,
12 years old, MGU Pre-teen Miss
Montcalm County and Lindsay
Corwin, 9 years old, MGU Little
Miss Montcalm County.
Lindsay has taken on a commu-
nity project assembling and deliv-
ering gift baskets to patients at the
Devos Children’s Hospital in Grand
Rapids. She chose this platform be-
cause Lindsay herself was a patient
at Devos all too often when she was
younger due to various issues and
illnesses. During one of her stays,
Lindsay was given a gift basket.
She has also given books to
Grand Rapids Allergy’s waiting
room for young children.
Lauren’s platform is Autism
Awareness. She chose this platform
because two of her family members
and a few of her friends have a form
of Autism. Lauren realized the
amount of preconceptions and lack
of knowledge regarding Autism over
the past few years. She hopes to fur-
ther educate residents of Montcalm
County through this event.
The Autism Walk will take place
at Ensley Park in Howard City is
from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.
11. After the walk there will be face
painting, chalk art, and an inflat-
able obstacle course for the chil-
dren. Anyone is welcome to attend,
including Montcalm County Royal-
ty (please wear sashes and crowns)
and are asked to bring a non-per-
ishable food item or a new/gently
used book to donate. All food items
will be donated to helping Hands of
Howard City and the books will be
donated to the Timothy C. Hauen-
stein Reynolds Township Library.
Monetary donations will be accept-
ed as well to purchase audio books
at the library. To keep everyone
safe, participants are encouraged to
not bring bikes or pets.
Lauren is planning to host an-
other walk in Greenville in the
spring of 2011 to benefit other parts
of Montcalm County. For more in-

tillery Cannon Crewmember Advanced
Individual Training course at Fort Sill,
Lawton, Okla.
The course is designed to train ser-
vicemembers to maintain, prepare and
load ammunition for firing; operate
and perform operator maintenance on
prime movers, self-propelled Howit-
zers, and ammunition vehicles; store,
maintain, and distribute ammunition
to using units as a member of battery or
battalion ammunition section; perform
crew maintenance and participate in
organizational maintenance of weapons
and related equipment; and establish
and maintain radio and wire communi-
cations.

Hazel Baker, 89, of Howard City passed away

60th anniversary family on Aug. 13, 2010, with an

ding date is August 19, 1950, and
they were married in the Sand
Lake United Methodist Church.
Charles and Betty have four chil-
dren: Gloria (Nick) Renner, Al-
len Gould, Gary Gould and Mark
Stephanie, Austin and Emily
Gould, and Brian Bigelow. Two
great grandsons: Nicklaus and
Cohen Renner.

She was born March 26, 1921, in Muskegon
Heights, the daughter of Lyman (Pete) and Ethel
(Ballou) Powell. Hazel Loved to travel and collect
dolls. She enjoyed spending time with her family.
In 1943, she married Richard Lee who survives.
Also surviving are son, Ron (Jackie) Baker of
Howard City; daughter Jennifer (Paul) Kroncke of
Coral Springs, Fla.; six grandchildren Dawn, Brian,
Nicole, Cheryl, Teresa and Brittany; eight great-
grandchildren, Brandon, Jack, Josh, Ben, Adam,
Ally, Parker and Lillian; four brothers, Ken (Arla)
Powell; Basil (Kay) Powell; Arvin Powell and Dale
Powell; four sisters, Norma Rogers, Arlene Bee-
be, Gladys (John) Fredenberg and Linda (Roger)
Weeks; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four
brothers, Warren Powell, Lester Powell, Owen
Powell and Jim Powell; and three sisters, Leona
Bennett, Shirley Turnes and Caroline Fraser.
Funeral services will take place on Wednesday
at 11 a.m. at The Heckman Funeral Home with
Pastor Brad Brillhart officiating with burial in the
Reynolds Cemetery. Friends may greet the family
on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., and prior to
services on Wednesday

who have a teen who’s ready to begin driv-
ing. There are practical steps you can take
to keep your teen safe when he or she hits

Not only is it important for your new driver
to know how to be a safe and responsible
