2. The diagrams below show some bones found in our skeletal system. Write down the
names of the bones in the boxes provided and then match the bones to their functions.
3. Identify the type of the joints shown in the picture 1 and picture 2

4. If your backbone is not working, what problem do you think you will have?
5. Differentiate between voluntary and involuntary muscles.
7. Why the last two pairs of rib bones are called floating ribs?
e. The elastic substance that prevents the bone from wear and tear

3 What is skeletal system?
The framework of the body, consisting of bones and other connective tissues, which protects and
supports the body tissues and internal organs.
4. List the functions of skeletal system.
The skeletal system performs vital functions — gives shape and support to the body, movement of
the muscles , protection of the internal delicate organs, blood cell production, calcium storage and
endocrine regulation — that enable us to survive
5. What is joint? Name the types of joints.
The area where two bones are attached for the purpose of permitting body parts to move.
A joint is usually formed of fibrous connective tissue and cartilage.
Types of joints
• Types of joint:
• Movable and immovable joints
Except skull all joints are movable
Types of movable joints
1.Ball and socket joint: Hip and shoulder. The ball and socket joint is formed when one
rounded bone fits into the cup-like depression of another bone. It allows movements in all
directions.
2. Hinge joint: Elbows, fingers, knees and toes
Move in one direction. Hinge joints are formed between two or more bones where the
bones can only move along one axis to flex or extend.
3. Pivot joint: Neck - The skull is connected to the uppermost vertebra of the spines
called atlas. This joint helps us to move our head upwards, downwards and sideways.
4. Gliding joints- wrist, ankles and between any two vertebrae of the backbone. It
allows the bones to slide against each other.
6. Differentiate between cartilage and bones.
Cartilage Bones
Cartilage is a soft, elastic Bone is hard and rigid tissue
Soft and flexible Strong and non-flexible
Present in the ears and nose. Makes the skeletal system
