STUDY MATERIAL

1. What is meant by organ system?

An organ system is a group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions. Each
does a particular job in the body, and is made up of certain tissues.

2 .List some main organ systems.

The main systems of the human body are:

 Circulatory system:

 Digestive system
 Excretory system:
 Muscular system. ...
 Nervous system: ...
 Skeletal system
 Reproductive system
3 What is skeletal system?
The framework of the body, consisting of bones and other connective tissues, which protects and
supports the body tissues and internal organs.
4. List the functions of skeletal system.
The skeletal system performs vital functions — gives shape and support to the body, movement of
the muscles , protection of the internal delicate organs, blood cell production, calcium storage and
endocrine regulation — that enable us to survive
5. What is joint? Name the types of joints.
The area where two bones are attached for the purpose of permitting body parts to move.
A joint is usually formed of fibrous connective tissue and cartilage.
Types of joints
• Types of joint:
• Movable and immovable joints
Except skull all joints are movable
Types of movable joints
1.Ball and socket joint: Hip and shoulder. The ball and socket joint is formed when one
rounded bone fits into the cup-like depression of another bone. It allows movements in all
directions.
2. Hinge joint: Elbows, fingers, knees and toes
Move in one direction. Hinge joints are formed between two or more bones where the
bones can only move along one axis to flex or extend.
3. Pivot joint: Neck - The skull is connected to the uppermost vertebra of the spines
called atlas. This joint helps us to move our head upwards, downwards and sideways.
4. Gliding joints- wrist, ankles and between any two vertebrae of the backbone. It
allows the bones to slide against each other.
6. Differentiate between cartilage and bones.
Cartilage Bones
 Cartilage is a soft, elastic  Bone is hard and rigid tissue
 Soft and flexible  Strong and non-flexible
 Present in the ears and nose.  Makes the skeletal system

7. Define the given terms

Tendon: Muscles are attached to the bones by strong fibres called tendons.
Ligament: A short band of tough, flexible fibrous connective tissue which connects two bones or
cartilages or holds together a joint.
8.What are muscles?
Muscles: A band or bundle of fibrous tissue in a human or animal body that has the ability to contract,
producing movement in or maintaining the position of parts of the body. Muscles are attached to
the bones by strong fibres called tendons. There are about 650 muscles are found in our
body. They make 40% weight of our body. Muscles work like pulling the bones.
9. Explain the movement of biceps and triceps muscles.
Since both the muscles are situated opposite from one another in the upper arm, when the
biceps contract, the triceps relax and vice versa. This mechanism of the two muscles makes them
opposing muscles and partner muscles. ... On the other hand, when the triceps shorten or contact,
the biceps elongates and relaxes.
10. How many different types of muscles are there?

 Skeletal muscle. or Voluntary muscles

 Smooth muscle. or involuntary muscle. ...
 Cardiac muscle.- found in the walls of heart..

10. List the functions of three types of muscles.

1. Voluntary muscles: These muscles are under our control. Examples muscles in our arms
and legs.
2. In voluntary muscles: The muscles that work but are not in our control. They work
automatically. Ex are muscles in our stomach and intestine.
3. Cardiac muscles: Type of involuntary muscles, found in the walls of the heart. They are not
in our control. These muscles make our heart to beat and never get tired.
