IS IT TOO LATE?
The Earth is in danger. Turn on the TV, and you see pictures of garbage and
dead fish on the beach. Open a newspaper and you read that the earth is getting
too hot. Listen to the radio, and you hear that our cities are dying from polluted
air. In the early 1990s, people all over the world were nervous. They hoped it
wasn’t too late to clean up the Earth’s air and water. It was time to do something.
They knew they had to change, and they made some decisions. For example,
before the year 2001, 61 countries are going to stop making CFCs. CFCs
(chlorofluorocarbons) are used in things like spray cans and refrigerators, and
they hurt the ozone layer. The ozone layer is very important because it protects
the Earth from the sun. People who care about the Earth also worry about
polystyrene, a kind of plastic in egg cartons and drinking cups. olystyrene is a
problem because it sometimes has CFCs; it is also non-biodegradable – that
means it just won’t go away. Many fast-food restaurants don’t use polystyrene
anymore.
Some experts think young people can do a lot to save our planet. Seven years
ago, the river near a school in Washington was full of oil and garbage. All the fish
and plants died. The students cleaned up all the garbage and planted new trees
and plants. Then they put healthy fish into the river. Thanks to the students, the
river is now a popular place to swim and fish. What can you do to save our home
– the Earth?

I used to rule the world

Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning and I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice

Feel the fear in my enemy‘s eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
―Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!‖

One minute I held the key

Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

Rio to stage 2016 Olympic Games (Este texto servirá para responder as 3
próximas questões)

Brazil will become the first South American country to host the Olympics after the
city of Rio de Janeiro was chosen to stage the 2016 Games. Rio won a majority
of the 95 votes at the meeting in Copenhagen, eliminating Madrid in the final
round. Tokyo and Chicago had already been knocked out. "The world has
recognised that the time has come for Brazil," said President Luiz Inacio Lula da
Silva.

Chicago's early exit was a surprise, after bookmakers made them favourites. US
President Barack Obama had flown to Denmark on Friday morning to join his
wife, Michelle, and make an emotional address to the International Olympic
Committee delegates.

But the gesture - the first time a current US president had addressed the IOC in
an attempt to win the Games - failed to persuade the voters as Chicago became
the first city to see its dream of hosting the biggest sporting event in the world fall
by the wayside. Speaking to reporters at the White House on his return, Mr
Obama said he wished he had come back with better news, but congratulated
Brazil for a "truly historic" win. "As friends to the Brazilian people, we welcome
this extraordinary sign of progress," he said.

The president said he had no doubt that Chicago's bid had been the strongest
possible, could not be prouder of the city, and insisted that he had no regrets
about travelling to Denmark. "I believe it is always a worthwhile endeavour to
promote and boost the United States of America," he added.
