Dear Parents

SGB Elections is the buzz word in our country at the moment. Sharonlea Primary will be
voting on the 6 March for a new SGB.

I would strongly advise parents of Grade R, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 parents to volunteer their services

or nominate another parent as you will be able to serve for the full 3 year term of office.
It is very frustrating and time consuming to go into a by-elections when someone leaves.

Who is eligible to serve on the SGB?

A parent or legal guardian of a learner at Sharonlea Primary. If your child leaves the
school you may no longer serve on the SGB.

Skills or expertise required

 Legal (HR / Lawyer)

 Finance (Accountant, book keeper etc)
 IT / Computer expertise
 Marketing
 Building / Maintenance

Any other skills are also welcome

Role of the SGB

 School Governance
 Support the Principal in her role as School Manager
 Manage School Finances, resources and facilities
 Generate extra income for the school and corporate sponsorships
 Serve on the Interview panel for all GDE senior appointments (HOD, Deputy
Principal and Principal)
 Always have the school’s best interest at heart

Meetings

Finance Committee (Principal, Treasurer (SGB Parent), Admin staff & Deputy Principals)
meet once a month to monitor monthly expenditure.

The Role of the Treasurer

 Responsible for drawing up the school’s budget for the AGM.

 Approves all expenditure over a certain amount
 Analyse school fee exemption applications and approves or declines applications
 Works closely with Debt Collector
The Rest of the SGB will meet once a term. Each member of the SGB will hold a specific
portfolio and will be required to report back at each meeting.

 6 Parents
 3 Teaching Staff
 1 Non-Teaching Staff
 Principal
 Co-opted members for specialised skills. These members do not have voting
rights.

Time of Meetings

18h00 - 19h30 (no longer than 90 minutes)

Term of Office

The term of office of the SGB may not exceed 3 years. Should a learner leave the school,
the parent may no longer serve on the SGB. The School will hold a By- Election to vote for
a new member.
