Literacy – ability to read and write

Media literacy – Repertoire of skills and capacities. Most common definition is the ability to access,
analyze and respond to a range of media.

Empowerment is the idea of power!

Relationship between media and society

1. Mass society approach – Sees society as an integrated whole, with structures and institutions
holding power and authority and exerting control over society.
2. Base-superstructure model – a Marxist approach. Media institutions are part of the
superstructure, along with other social and cultural institutions.

Grammar of the camera

1. Extreme long shot – Shot of e.g., a large crowd scene or a view of scenery as far as the horizon
2. Long shot – View of a situation or setting from a distance
3. Medium long shot- Shows a group of people in interaction with each other
4. Full shot – View of a figure’s entire body
5. Medium shot – shows a subject down to his/her chest or waist (half body)
6. Close-up – A full screen shot of a subject’s face
7. Extreme close-up – a shot of hand, eye, mouth, or object in detail
8. Establishing shot- used in a beginning of a scene to indicate location/setting
9. POV shot – Shows a scene from a perspective of a character or one person
10. Over-the-shoulder shot – Often used in dialogue scenes, a frontal view of a dialogue partner
from the perspective of someone standing behind and slightly to the side of the other partner,
so that both can be seen.
11. Reaction shot – Short shot of a character’s response to an action
12. Insert shot – A detail shot which quickly gives visual information necessary to understand the
meaning of the scene
13. Reverse-angle shot – a shot from the opposite perspective after an over-the-shoulder shot.
14. Hand-held camera – the camera is not mounted to a tripod and instead is held by a
cameraperson
15. Aerial shot- Long or extreme shot of the ground from the air
16. High-angle shot – Shows people or objects from above higher than eye level
17. Low-angle shot – Shows object or people from below lower than eye level
18. Eye-level shot – Views a subject from the level of a person’s eye
19. Pan(ning shot) – The camera pans (horizontally) from left to right or vice versa
20. Tilt shot – The camera tilts upward or downward around a vertical line
21. Tracking shot – The camera follows along next to or behind a moving object or person
22. Zoom – The stationary camera approaches a subject by zooming in or moves farther away by
zooming out.

Genre – French word which means “class” or “kind.” Originated from a Latin word “genus” which means
a class of things that can be broken down to subcategories

1. Hard or straight news – usually found in first page it values two elements: Seriousness and
timeliness.
2. Soft news – Include lifestyle, travel, articles offering the best way to do something. Also known
as human interest stories.
3. Feature – extension of soft news in a sense that the human interest angle is played up and
presented in a longer and elaborate format. There is a desire to take a more in-depth look at a
topic and attempts to engage the reader using more colorful language or innovations in style.
4. Editorials and opinions – These opinion articles and editorials express an individual or
organizational point of view. An editorial can argue for a certain issue and call on a person or an
entity to act on the issue or respond to the clamor of the citizens.
5. Investigative report – Focuses on finding, reporting, and presenting news which the authorities
try to conceal.

1. Hard-sell – mostly commercial in nature and utilize explicit messages to get the customers
to purchase a product or patronize a service
2. Soft-sell – Associative in nature. Indirectly selling their product
3. Infomercial – combination of information and commercial. Combined the need to inform or
educate and the intent to sell a product.

Entertainment

- Derives from a French word entretenir which means to hold the attention, keep busy, or
amused.

Information

- All about the raw material that circulates around us and from where news as another genre is
generated.
