Assumptions of the Canister Desorption Model

1. The core is homogeneous in all properties

2. The length of the drill core, L, is sufficiently larger than its diameter
3. Single phase radial flow of gas exists at constant temperature, T , and constant equilibrium
pressure, pe.
4. Total storage capacity of the core,, consists of the pore capacity and adsorption capacity.

5. The bulk density variation is neglected as compared to the gas density variation. The gas molar
density is described with the real gas law, ρ = p zRT .

Adsorption
 Adsorption is defined as the deposition of molecular species onto the surface.
 Typically, coal and shale reservoirs can store far more gas in the adsorbed state than conventional
reservoirs can hold by compression at pressures below 1000 psia.

Langmuir Isotherm Formulation

The release of adsorbed gas is commonly described by a pressure relationship called the Langmuir
Isotherm.

The typical formulation of Langmuir isotherm is:

Langmuir Volume
The Langmuir Volume is the maximum amount of gas that can be adsorbed to coal or shale at infinite
pressure.
Langmuir Pressure
The Langmuir pressure, or critical desorption pressure, is the pressure at which one half of the
Langmuir volume can be adsorbed
