STRUCTURAL COMMENTS FOR THE RENAL DIALYSIS UNIT AT SOHAR HOSPITAL

FOR THE SUBMITTED GEOTECHNICAL REPORT / REVISED CALCULATIONS AND DRAWINGS

1. ITEM A : GEOTECHNICAL REPORT ( ML / JB / 14 / 1049 DATED 14 JULY 2014 )

We have no objections to the results of the Geotechnical Report but please reflect the following
parameters and conditions in the design as well as drawings ;

 Subsoil is dense to very dense , silty / clayey , very sandy to medium coarse gravel

 Isolated Pad or Raft Foundation is Suitable .

 Minimum Embedment Depth of Foundation from 1.50m to have net allowable bearing pressure
from 370 Kpa for isolated pad .

 Settlement estimated less than 25mm.

 Groundwater was not encountered up to 10.0m depth explored

 Soil material at site is not suitable for structural backfilling purposes.

 Considering the Sulphate and Chloride content as well as prevailing exposure conditions ,

the following concrete criteria are recommended for foundation

(a) Cement type for the foundation can be OPC

(b) Minimum Cement Content is not explicitly mentioned ( verify what is Note 3? )

(c) Water Cement Ratio is 0.65 or lower

(d) Clear Cover for Reinft = 50mm or more

(e) Requirement for waterproofing

 Normal dry condition – Bitumen or Rubber Latex Emulsion ( MasterSeal 420)

 Wet Condition – Acrylic Reinf Cementitious Flexible Waterproof ( MasterSeal550)

 Capillary Zone – Surface applied Capillary Waterproofing ( MasterSeal502)

Excavation and Backfilling

 Class B well graded non-cohesive backfilling , size not exceeding 37.5mm and not more than 15%
passing 0.075mm, compacted to 95% or more Modified Proctor Max Dry Density.

 Recommended Structural Fill material shall be granular fill ( well graded sand / ravelly sand ) and
coarse aggregate ( well graded gravelly sand mixture ) for their good drainage characteristics and
compactable to form an excellent base .
2 ITEM B : STRUCTURAL CALCULATION
NOTE :
Drawings had been reviewed now without THE APPROVED structural calculations seen.

3 ITEM C : STRUCTURAL DRAWINGS

PLEASE INCLUDE IN THE FINALIZED STRUCTURAL DRAWINGS AS PER COMMENTS ON THE

DRAWING SHEETS

 Compaction of Backfill to be minimum 98% Modified Proctor Maximum Dry Density

 Polythene Sheets to be Minimum 1500 Gauge

 Bituminous Liquid Tar Epoxy Paint waterproofing to be Minimum 500 Dry Film Thickness ( 3 coats )

4 Item D : The following CORRECTIONS to be incorporated in the drawings

 WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND TO USE ALL DIMENSIONS AND MEASUREMENTS TO BE IN

MILLIMETERS TO MERIT OUR APPROVAL. ( TO PREVENT CONFUSION IN ACTUAL )

 In dwg S / 1-9 Side Notes # 2 , please mention that “ Main Building Foundation is Designed for
G + 1 + Roof “ ( instead of just saying 2 Floors )

 Please consistently reflect Codal standards ( say BS 8110 ) in your design and drawings as well.

 Kindly confirm the Cube strength 28th day compressive strength Fcu for Structural Elements to
be consistent in all drawings ( is it C40 , C35 ? ). We prefer C40

 Kindly verify the soil report regarding the Cement type to be used ( whether OPC or SRC ) for
substructure structural elements such as footings , grade slabs , plinth beams , substructure
columns . However , we prefer the more stringent SRC .

 Please verify and reconcile Side Notes # 8 in dwg S / 1-9 and Section J - Notes #5 in dwg S / 9-9
regarding the clear cover for structural elements. Ensure the clear concrete covers specially for
substructure to comply with recommendations from the soil test.

 Please confirm the Cube strength 28th day compressive strength Fcu for Blinding to be consistent
in all drawings ( is it C15 , C10 ? ). We prefer C20

 We recommend for you to ADJUST the COLUMN LINK CONFIGURATION IN ALL COLUMNS to a
more practical arrangement incorporating the Clause 3.12.7.2 of BS8110 ( attached is the sketch
showing the application of this Clause to the Column Links ).

 Yield Strength of Steel to be consistently Grade 460 all throughout the drawings
  In dwg S / 9-9 , verify the contents of Sections D and E and correct accordingly.

 Please supply the missing hatches in the legend for Blockworks in Section K in dwg S / 9-9 and
ensure that they are consistently used in the framing plans.

 Please include drawing of water stop on the elevator shaft wall immediately above the surface of
the raft foundation slab which is a critical construction joint as commented in the drawing.

 In the dwg S / 8-9 , please explicitly mention the clear concrete cover for the “ Typical Sectional
Elevation of R.C. Column and Footing as per soil report.

NOTE :

UPON RESUBMISSION OF REVISED DRAWINGS EDITED AS PER COMMENTS , KINDLY RESUBMIT

ALONG WITH THE COMMENTED SET . ALSO , PLEASE PROVIDE US A HARD COPY OF THE
STRUCTURAL CALCULATIONS APPROVED BEFORE FOR OUR RECORDS
