Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the pre-service biology teachers’ attitudes towards ICT using in

biology teaching in terms of various variables. The research group consist of 70 students who studying at

Department of Biology Education of Ziya Gökalp Education Faculty in Dicle University. “Information and

Communication Technology Attitudes Questionnaire-IAQ” (Kubiatko and Haláková, 2009) which includes

28 items was used as data collection tool. Cronbach's Alpha internal consistency coefficient of the scale

was calculated to be 0.82. It was used SPSS 15.0 package program in the analysis of the data. The

analysis of the data were made by t test and ANOVA techniques. Significance level was taken to be .05.

The results indicate that; pre-service biology teachers have positive attitudes toward ICT using in biology

teaching and although their attitudes do not differ regarding gender and class.

Paraphrase

In our today’s generation, Information and communication technologies (ICT) have become one of the

fundamental building blocks of modern society. As part of the 21st century skills, integration of ICT in

education offers the skill of digital literacy among the students and teachers that can be used to

enhance the teaching and learning process. The effectiveness of ICT integration largely depends on

teachers and student’s familiarity, mastery and ability with these technological inventions and the whole

IT learning environment. Learning through ICT can offer a variety of opportunities including non-

interactive content provision as well as highly interactive student-centered learning experiences like

virtual field trips, simulations, and virtual laboratories. Furthermore, ICT has opened new avenues like,

online learning, e-learning, virtual university, e-coaching, e-education, e-journal, etc. From these things

that ICT provide, we can conclude that its integration in Biology class is highly recommended as what
this article is trying to point out. As we all know, biology as a subject includes theory and practical

components. Any concepts or theories that are being discussed in a Biology class need to be practiced so

that the students would truly understand it. And ICT are on its way in making the biology class more

practice-based through the use of technological advances. Teaching and learning of Biology can be made

hassle-free and comfortable by using ICT tools in instructional strategies. The use of ICT is an avenue for

an easy understanding of biological concepts among students. It can also change traditional classroom

into a smart classroom. To boil down everything, the article offers the pedagogical implications of ICT

integration in a Biology class.
