Manufacturers' Standard Gauges for Steel Products are definite thickness gauges. Weights
are based on steel with a density of 489.6 lbm/ft3. An extra 2.5% is included in the sheet
weights to allow for thickness variation and shearing tolerance. Galvanized sheets are .0037
in, thicker and 2.5 oz/ft2 heavier than uncoated sheets. Thinner coatings are also available.
(Commercial coating is 1.25 oz/ft2.) All thicknesses of 1/4 in. or more are plates and are
unrelated to gauge numbers. Refer to the Steel Products Manual of AISI and manufacturers'
data.
2
Mill Standard Thicknesses for Aluminum Products are unrelated to gauge numbers. Weights
are based on alloy with a density of .098 lbm/in.3 or 169.4 lbm/ft3. Refer to manufactures'
data.
3
Brown & Sharpe Gauges are identical to American Wire Gauges. Weights are based on
aluminum, copper, brass, and magnesium alloys with densities of .098, .321, .308, and .064
lbm/in.3, respectively. Refer to manufacturers' data.

Birmingham Wire Gauges are identical to Stubs' Wire Gauges. Weights are based on copper
with a density of .321 lbm/in.3. Refer to manufacturers' data.
5
United States Steel Wire Gauges are identical to American Steel & Wire Gauges, Washburn
& Moen Wire Gauges, and Roebling Wire Gauges. Weights are based on steel and copper
with densities of .283 and.321 lbm/in.3, respectively. Refer to manufacturers' data.
6
United States Standard Gauges for Iron & Steel Products are weight gauges based on
wrought iron with a density of 480 lbm/ft3. Weights are based on stainless steel and titanium
alloys with densities of .287 and .163 lbm/in.3 ,respectively. All thicknesses of 3/16 in. or
more are plates. Thicknesses of 5/16 in. or more are unrelated to gauge numbers. Refer to
manufacturers' data.
7
It is recommended that sheet and wire always be specified by decimal thickness rather than
gauge number.
