STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

My name is Aravind Krishnakumar. I hail from Kochi, located in the southern state of Kerala and I
am a citizen of India. I wish to pursue the Master of Engineering program in Mechanical
Engineering from University of New South Wales.

I am incredibly lucky as I have a family who have absolute confidence in my dream and my ability to
follow through with them. They are always ready to go the extra mile and provide the support that I
need to succeed in all my endeavors. They have always taught me to dream big and be ambitious but still
be grounded in my ideals. My father, Krishna Kumar Rajappan Nair, a Mechanical Engineer by profession
is working with Kuwait Oil Company in Kuwait. My mother, Sunitha Krishnakumar is working as a
teacher for a school in Kuwait following CBSE curriculum. My younger brother is currently in his final
year of schooling in Delhi Public School (FAIPS), Kuwait. My father will be my sponsor for my tuition
fees and other expenses incurred by me during my time in Australia. The annual family income is
approximately AUD 175000.

I have completed my Higher Secondary Education with 87.6% from Fahaheel Al Watanieh Indian
Private School, Kuwait in CBSE Curriculum. I also scored a cumulative grade point average (CGPA)
of 9 out of 10 in high school. I graduated from National Institute of Technology, Calicut with a CGPA
of 6.66 out of a maximum of 10 points.

My undergraduate level education in Mechanical Engineering at National Institute of Technology,

Calicut has been a revelation to say the least. I took a deep interest in the core concepts and the
theory underlying every phenomenon. I was particularly drawn to the fields of solid mechanics,
thermal engineering and gas dynamics, thanks to some inspirational professors, and I began to
appreciate the intricacies involved in making even the simplest of machines work. This is what led
me to believe that a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering would be the ideal path to take
considering my interests and ambitions.

For my senior year major project, I started with a premise to improve existing tilt-rotor designs, our
reference being the V22 Osprey. My group has successfully validated that our concept is far
superior using our custom-made rig. Our work was also funded by the Technical Education Quality
Improvement Program (TEQIP), an initiative by the Government of India, to support original and
innovative projects.

During my four years of undergraduate studies, I have completed numerous internships in different
countries and over various domains. After my second year, I joined Dr. Prathap C at Indian Institute
of Space Science and Technology as a summer intern. I was entrusted with carrying out a research
project namely, “Post Processing and Analysis of Turbulent Swirl Flow”. During the program at the
Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, I got to visit and understand the activities at the
Indian Space Research Organization. After my third year, I joined Kuwait Oil Company, a major
world player in the oil and gas industry as a summer intern. Also, while interning there, I was given
a very special opportunity to intern with AMEC Foster Wheeler, a pioneer in engineering and
project management.

I decided to pursue a Master’s degree that would allow me to specialize in fields of engineering that
are interesting to me and has future growth potential. Although there are several reputable
universities in my home country, I feel that the quality of education, practical exposure and variety
of courses offered by Indian universities are behind when compared to the superior universities in
countries such as Australia, Canada, United Kingdom and United States of America.

I chose Australia because its universities tend to promote practical learning. Also, students
seemingly have a lot more personal space to improvise and this provides a platform for them to
carry out their own projects involving original ideas. Australia has consistently been ranked by the
UN to be among the top three nations in providing the best quality of life. It also has a safe,
multicultural, friendly and harmonious society. I know that Australians value the wealth of cultural
diversity and social sophistication that international students bring to the campuses and
communities, and great care is taken in looking after international students and helping them to
adjust to the Australian way of life.

I decided to apply to the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia because of its vast research
capabilities and industrial exposure programs. I am certain that I can get the best possible education and
experience here due to its unique facilities such as state of the art wind tunnels and a mechanical
workshop that is reputed to be the best in Sydney. Sustainable Manufacturing is a practice I feel is of
prime importance to any mechanical engineer and I would like to master the practice during my time
there. The master’s program offered by UNSW is a highly ranked one and the university itself is
consistently ranked among the top fifty universities across the globe. I have carefully gone through the
course structure and I feel satisfied that the Master of Engineering course offered by UNSW is the right
choice.

A master’s degree in mechanical engineering will allow me to dive deep into topics that fascinate me and
it will help me equip myself with the skills needed to mature professionally as an engineer. Graduates in
this field will be indispensable in the future, which makes it a highly employable discipline. Pursuing this
course at UNSW will give me a diverse choice of industries and projects to be a part of and it will allow
me to easily branch out into numerous areas of mechanical engineering.

In the future, I see myself putting the skills that I acquired to good use by working in reputed mechanical
engineering companies in India. India is a fast growing and dynamic economy where professionals in
engineering will be of much value. I would like to return to my home country and work in one of the top-
notch companies in the country to help promote the further growth of the country. Masters from a
reputed university such as University of New South Wales will give me a pathway into coveted positions
in the field of engineering in my country.

VISA CONDITIONS

I understand that I am required to meet 80% attendance and 50% of pass card in academics for my visa
to be valid throughout my course period. I also know that I have to maintain OSHC for the entire
duration of program and I am allowed to work part-time for 40 hours per fortnight only. I understand
that transfer of University within 6 months of enrollment of my program cannot be done.

I thank you for considering my visa application.
