CAUSES OF MENINGITIS
Pneumococcus
This bacteria commonly causes ear and sinus infections as well as pneumonia
Meningococcus
A vaccine prevents this bacteria from invading the bloodstream and it commonly cause upper respiratory infections
Haemophilus
This is often referred to as Hib and it is the leading cause of bacterial meningitis in children
Listeria
These bacteria can be found in unpasteurized cheeses, hot dogs and luncheon meats and mainly affects pregnant women and the elderly.

What is Meningitis?
By: Nicole Kiley, Dalhart Dobbs, Connor
Maddalon, and Keira McTighe
- Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes or meninges surrounding your
brain and spinal cord. The swelling from meningitis normally causes symptoms
such as headaches, fevers, and stiff necks. Most cases of meningitis in the U.S. are
caused by a viral infection, but bacterial and fungal infections are other causes.
Symptoms
- Early symptoms of meningitis may appear similar to a cold but then they escalate.
When they escalate some other symptoms can be confusion, severe nausea, rash,
and purple spots on the skin. After serious symptoms arise seeing a doctor is
crucial because meningitis can be fatal within 24 hours.
Causes
- The 4 main bacteria that cause this illness are Pneumococcus, Meningococcus,
Haemophilus, and Listeria. There are other bacteria that can cause it are rare but
many other bacteria can cause meningitis in rare cases.
Diagnosis
- Meningitis can be diagnosed by physical exam, imaging, or blood cultures. An
examination of the head can determine if you are infected due to visible rashes on
the scalp and base of the skull.
Treatments
- Some types of Meningitis don’t even have treatments. In a couple of weeks they
can be cured with just some bedrest, plenty of fluids, and over the counter pain.
- Corticosteroids; This treatment is used for noninfectious Meningitis. It helps to
ensure recovery and reduce the risk of complications, such as brain swelling and
seizures.
Statistics
- Meningitis affects about 10000 people every year and the after affects are usually
debilitating. Some people that survive live with permanent brain damage. With
new medical advances the mortality rate of meningitis has dropped from.
