PROJECT PROPOSAL ON TUKLAS BATAAN

Title : Tuklas Bataan

Sector : Culture
Partner Organization : COED SC UNESCO
Implementing Agency : Mga Kasocsci UNESCO
Project Duration : August 2017 – May 2018
Starting Date : August 2017
Funding Requested : N/A
Recipient Organization : Mga Kasosci UNESCO

A. Rationale

Bataan rings a chord in the heart of every Filipino. It is a symbol of

democracy and freedom – a memorial to the gallant Filipino-American
defenders of Bataan who fought decisive battles that delayed the timetable of
the well-equipped and better trained Japanese Imperial forces, and changed
the course of history in the Pacific. It is a province in the Philippines located in
the Central Luzon region. Occupying the entire Bataan Peninsula on Luzon,
Bataan is bordered by the provinces of Zambales and Pampanga to the north
and faces the South China Sea to the west, Subic Bay to the north-west, and
encloses Manila Bay to the east. Despite its proximity to Manila, the province
isn’t commercialized or as “touristy” as some other popular destinations,
making it a good choice for weekend warriors who want to get away from the
crowds. Bataan, being an underrated destination of heritage, should be
unraveled and uncover to the people of the Philipines. With its land area,
1,373 sq. km, that is composed of 11 municipalities and 1 component city
holds a great part of our history.

Bataan isn’t just a province and a peninsula, it is a land of rich heritage

and antiquity which glorifies the people and the land itself. The said province
offers many things - good food, good people and good places, you just have
to name it. Underrated and commonly unnoticed, Bataan can be a place that
can follow the steps of the provinces such as Palawan, Cebu and Bohol. The
hidden beauty of Bataan will now be exposed through the said project.
TUKLAS BATAAN will be a great opportunity to let the vast world of social
media witness the pristine and majestic province of Bataan as the center of
attraction.

A Bataeno should be more knowledgeable and aware of what his dear

province witnessed, holds and can offer. The said project will give the people
of Bataan, especially the youth, a dose of the rich and historic past of their
land. With the help of the vast spectrum of the internet, the officers and
volunteers of Mga KaSocSci UNESCO will take you at the front of viewing our
province through the widely used platform of Facebook live. This will be a
good way to let the people tour and explore just by simply logging into your
account.

Exploring the province wouldn’t just incorporate the new things in

Bataan, but also relive and treasure the colorful and creative past. It maybe
tangible or intangible, discovering can also make us know how lucky we are
and how we should take responsibilities to take care and sustain it.

B. Objectives

The objectives of this project are as follow:

1. To open the eyes of our countrymen on what are the things they’re missing
being a Filipino in his own land.
2. To engage the students to better understand the nature, culture and heritage
of our race.
3. To establish awareness, respect and nationalism in the minds of the students
of Bataan Peninsula State University – Balanga Campus.

C. Basis of the Proposal

The province of Bataan is best known for its historical and cultural
attractions. The Battle of Bataan is famous for being one of the last stands of
American and Filipino soldiers before they were overwhelmed by the
Japanese forces during World War II. The Bataan Death March, where the
infamous march started, was also named after the province. But this is just
one of the things that should be discovered by us.

The first inhabitants of the Bataan peninsula are the Ayta Magbeken
people, who are one of the first Negrito ancestors of present-day Filipinos.
Later on, Tagalog communities from southern Luzon migrated to parts of
Bataan and the Ayta Magbeken migrated towards the mountain areas of
Bataan by the end of the 16th century. In 1647, Dutch naval forces landed in
country in an attempt to seize the islands from Spain. The Dutch massacred
the people of Abucay in Bataan. Historian Cornelio Bascara documents that
the province of Bataan was established on January 11, 1757 by Governor-
General Pedro Manuel Arandia out of territories belonging to Pampanga and
the corregimiento of Mariveles which, at the time, included Maragondon,
Cavite across the Manila Bay.

Bataan featured prominently during World War II. Prior to the 1941
Japanese invasion, the US Army stored nearly 1,000,000 US gallons (3,800
m3) of gasoline there. Shortly after the Japanese Army invaded the country in
December 1941, the combined US and Filipino forces were being gradually
overrun and General Douglas MacArthur moved his troops to the Bataan
Peninsula in an attempt to hold out until a relief force could be sent from the
US. Japanese forces started a siege of the peninsula on January 7, 1942,
and launched an all-out assault on April 3, a few months after the Battle of the
Points. The majority of the American and Filipino forces surrendered on April
9 and were forced to march more than a 100 kilometres (62 mi) from Bataan
to Capas, Tarlac, which became known as the Bataan Death March.

Aside from the rich history that the province holds, the histories and
lesson from the past events that Bataan encountered reflect how strong and
resilient our ancestors are. But Bataan isn’t just an old province that hides its
strengths, these should be unraveled, explored and shared. We say that
“oldies are goodies” , which should imply a stronger hold on what we should
develop and treasure. After the Facebook live that’ll be done, a prouder and
bolder Bataeno should be birth.
D. Expected Outcome

The students are expected to achieved the following,

1. Instill the importance of our culture and heritage of Bataan.
2. Understand that we should take responsibilities in preserving and promoting
our rich past..
3. Open minds for a more patriotic and nationalistic people of this country.

E. Possible Risks/Problems and Countermeasures

The possible problem of the project is the cooperation of the students who’ll
have a dilemma on the schedules of the discovery and tour. As counter
measure, we would make schedules that’ll fit most of the contestants.

F. Methodology

Walking heritage tours. To further dig in to what the province can offer,
explorations and tours to the different towns of Bataan will be done with just
merely walking to feel more in touch with the heritage sites. This can make us
see what tangible and intangible culture and art of each town has. This will
give a front seat and a first class experience to make us more proud of
Bataan.

Facebook Live. The 21st century brought us a wider spectrum of socialization

and communication. The most and common platform that we can use is
Facebook. Mga KaSocSci UNESCO will make you VIPs as we shoot our
explorations and tours live. This will keep you in touch with us as if you are
travelling with the officers and volunteers of the said organization.

G. Monitoring and Evaluation Plan

To monitor the activity, a narrative report will be written, in which it will be

supported by pictures, videos and minutes of the event proceedings.

H. Exit Plan

After all the tours, the photos taken from the discovery will be put in a gallery
to make the other students see the beauty of our own places. These will also
make them understand the importance of such activities as a citizen of this
country.
