• The protocol Time division multiple access (TDMA) represents a channel access
method, based on the frequency distribution of resource sharing time.

• The method is designed for digital systems in which data (including analog) is
converted to a digital format.

• Packets pass the different compression modes (Acelp Vcelp).

• Packets are packaged to shell containing, inter alia, data synchronization called
Guard Period.

Compression method will allow a sample of speech \ data for
an entire Second.

 The information will be compressed into a designated time

frame window and synchronization information will be added
to it.

3

 The Packets are encapsulated into the designated time frame.

4
TDMA

 On the “Receiving side , the information will be “extracted” into afull second –
thus allowing the Audio to be heard in it’s full .

Implemented as part of a better utilization of RF channel resources infrastructure

(Repeaters) that exist on the ASTRO
 a Standard had been established for utilizing the Repeaters in RF sites.
 The use of TDMA technology allows to double the use of a given quantity of
Repeaters.
 The doubling is achieved by dividing each channel into two logical channels. In
fact two separate logical channels.
 this option had been available since version 7.11 introduced the option for TDMA
use on the Motorola ASTRO used.

 The technique of repeater usage is called DDM (dynamic Dual Mode).

There are 2 modes of TDMA : as defined in the ZC’s

 DDM FDMA
 DDM TDMA

 The Zone Controller configuration shall point to the correct relevant

configuration.

 Sites supporting TDMA operation.

X2-TDMA / Phase II TDMA

TDMA Supported Elements

GTR RF Sites
 MSO Management system ( from A7.11 onwards).
MCC7100 / MCC7500 Dispatchers.
 APX based MS equipment.

Channels can be defined for TDMA in 3 modes of operation:

 FDMA only
TDMA only
 Dynamic Channel

 Channels can be defined

in 3 levels within
infrastructure level.

 Channel definition is
performed via the UNC
wizard application.

13
TDMA Possible ?

MS Unit working on TDMA TG in a site with TDMA Free channel ?

Conversation will work – channel will be granted.

14
TDMA Possible ?

MS with TDMA TG in a site with TDMA Occupied Channel

Conversation might be lost – or – busy will be emitted to the initiating person

15
TDMA Possible ?

MS with TDMA TG – in a NON TDMA ch. site

MS will be granted with a REGULAR FDMA channel – while all

other group members will be migrated into FDMA operation.

Same applies when (old) MS unit does not support TDMA

operation.

16
TDMA in Astro

 Better utilization at the site channels (almost doubling)

 MS Unit transmission is not continuous (battery life,Signalling improved).

 Versatile use of the channels (Dynamic Ch.).

 Coverage are lower with 2db average compared to FDMA.

 Control Channel will Always be on an FDMA channel.
