In this session we will work on depth on some important explorers of history. The list of explorers is: Marco Polo,
Description and Vasco de Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, Hernan Corter, Zheng He, Bartolomeu Dias, Yuri Gargarian, Prince Henry the
contents navigator, Diego Velázquez, Balboa, Elcano, Charles Darwin, Francisco Pizarro, Leig Ericson, Roald Amundsen,
Edmund Hillary, Ibn Battuta and Neil Armstrong.
We will start by refreshing the history of Christopher Columbus and we ask students if they are familiar with any other explorers. We
explain children that today they are going to do a research on a famous explorer or adventurer. We project the worksheet “Research
on a famous explorer” in the white board and go over it all the class together. We tell the children what they have to put in each circle:
When did this person live, Important fact of his live, Why is he famous, How did he accomplish it, The consequences of his/her action,
and finally if they have extra space they can search some interesting facts of this person’s life. We ask some volunteers to read each 30min
question and to explain what they must look for in each part.
Once all the information they need is clear, children distribute in pairs or groups of three. Inside a had we will have all the names of the
famous explorers we have to work on and each pair will pick up one randomly. After, they will start looking for it and completing the
worksheet “research report”. They will have books, tablets and a computer to access the information they need. The main websites
that we will use are: www.bbc.co.uk/history/forkids or www.ducksters.com and other history websites for kids.
We will also set a “sand clock” that will be displayed in the white board so that everyone can see it. Children will have to manage the 60min
time in order to finish the task. If in the second session students start to finish the research, they can start doing the posters for the final
timeline.
In case a child has no command on English, he or she will be paired with another student, in this case they would work
Linguistic support in a group of three. He or she will help him to understand and follow the class.
Children will also have available the glossary of the project in case they need to search any word.
The worksheet will be taken into account for the assessment of this session. We are going to focus if all the information
is present in it and if this is correct. Also, it is important to see if they have followed the instructions to search the
Assessment information. The teacher will be walking around to help children with this research and give feedback on the work
students are doing.
Finally, the reflections of students on how they have worked in pairs will be also taken into consideration.
