Transfer Gears
Disassemble Transfer Gears 3159-015

START BY:

a. remove torque converter, transmission and transfer gears

1. Put the torque converter, transmission and transfer gears in position on wood blocks as shown.

2. Remove the bolts and tube assembly (1) from the transmission oil pump and the transfer gear case.

3. Remove the two bolts that hold clips (2) and the wiring harness to the cover.

4. Use a hoist, and put the torque converter, transmission and transfer gears in position on wooden
blocks as shown.

5. Fasten tooling (A) and a hoist to the transmission case as shown.

6. Remove bolts (3) and the torque converter and transmission as a unit from the transfer gears. The
weight of the torque converter and transmission is 217 kg (680 lb.).

7. Use a hoist, and put the transfer gear case in position on wooden blocks as shown. The weight of
the transfer gears is 177 kg (390 lb.).

8. Remove the four bolts, cover (6) and gasket (4) from the case.

9. Remove screen (5) and filter (magnets) (7) from the case.

10. Remove bolt (10), retainer (9), the O-ring seal and yoke (8) from the output shaft.

11. Turn the transfer gear case over, and put it in position on wooden blocks as shown.

12. Remove the bolts that hold bearing cage (11) to the case.

13. Use two 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws (12) to loosen bearing cage (11) and the O-ring seal from the
case.

14. Remove bearing cage (11) and the O-ring seal from the case.

15. Remove O-ring seal (14) and bearing cup (13) from bearing cage (11).

16. Remove shims (16) from the transfer gear case. Keep the shims together for assembly purposes.

17. Remove gear (15) and the bearing cones from the case.

18. Use tooling (B) to remove bearing cones (17) from each side of the gear.

19. Remove bolt (19), the washer and the O-ring seal from shaft assembly (18).

20. Install a 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolt (20) in the end of shaft assembly (18). Remove shaft
assembly (18) and the O-ring seal from the case.

21. Remove gear (21) and the bearing cones as a unit from the case.

22. Remove O-ring seal (22) from shaft assembly (18).

23. Remove bearing cone (23), spacer (24) and bearing cone (25) from gear (21).

24. Remove bearing cups (27) and ring (26) from gear (21).

25. Remove the bolts that hold bearing cage (29) to the case.

26. Use two 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws (28) to loosen bearing cage (29) and the O-ring seal from the
case.

27. Remove bearing cage (29) and the O-ring seal from the case.

28. Remove O-ring seal (32) from bearing cage (29).

29. Remove bearing cup (30) and lip-type seal (31) from bearing cage (29).

30. Remove output shaft (33), the bearings and gear (34) as a unit from the case.

NOTE: The output shaft is free to fall when it is pushed through the bearing.

31. Use tool (C) and a press to push output shaft (33) through bearing (35) and gear (34).

32. Use tool (D) and (C) and a press to push the output shaft from bearing (36).

33. Remove three bolts (37) and plate (38) from the case.

34. Remove bearing cup (40) from the transfer gear case.

35. Remove lip-type seal (39) from the case.

36. Remove bearing cup (41) from the transfer gear case.

Assemble Transfer Gears 3159-016

1. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (1), and install it in the transfer gear case as shown.

2. Put 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material in the seal bore in the case, and let it dry. Do not put liquid
gasket material on the lip of the seal case.

3. Use tooling (A), and install seal (3) in the case with the lip of the seal toward the inside of the case
as shown. Put clean transmission oil on the lip of the seal.

4. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (2), and install it in the case as shown.

5. Put plate (5) in position in the transfer gear case, and install three bolts (4) that hold it in place.

6. Install gear (7) on output shaft (6) as shown.

7. Heat bearing cone (8) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F), and install it on the output
shaft as shown.

8. Heat bearing cone (9) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F), and install it on the output
shaft as shown.

9. Put output shaft (6), gear (7), and the bearings as a unit in position in the transfer gear case.

10. Put original shims (10) in position on the case.

11. Put 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material in the seal bore in cage (14), and let it dry. Do not put the
liquid gasket material on the case of the lip seal.

12. Use tooling (A), and install seal (12) in cage (14) with the lip of the seal toward the inside of the
cage as shown. Put clean transmission oil on the lip of the seal.

13. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (11), and install it in cage (14).

14. Install O-ring seal (13) on cage (14).

15. Put cage (14) in position on the transfer gear case, and install the bolts that hold it.

16. Use tooling (B) and pry bar (15) to check bearing end play. Add or remove shims to get a bearing
end play of 0.10 ± 0.05 mm (.003 ± .002 in.).

17. Lower the temperature of bearing cups (17), and install them and ring (18) in gear (16).

18. Install O-ring seal (19) on shaft assembly (20).

19. Put bearing cone (21), spacer (22) and bearing cone (23) in position in gear (16).

20. Put gear (16), spacer (22) and bearings (21) and (23) as a unit in position in the transfer gear case
as shown.

21. Install shaft assembly (19) in the case with the pin in the shaft assembly aligned with notch (27)
in the case.

22. Put washer (24) and O-ring seal (25) in position on bolt (26), and install the bolt.

23. Heat bearing cones (28) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F), and install them on each
side of gear (29).

24. Install gear (29) in the case as shown.

25. Put original shims (30) in position on the case.

26. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (32), and install it in cage (31).

27. Install O-ring seal (33) on cage (31).

28. Put cage (35) in position on the transfer gear case, and install the bolts that hold it.

29. Use tooling (B) and pry bar (34) to check bearing end play. Add or remove shims to get a bearing
end play of 0.10 ± 0.05 mm (.003 ± .002 in.).

30. Put yoke assembly (37) in position on the output shaft as shown.

31. Put washer (39) and O-ring seal (38) on bolt (36), and install the bolt to hold yoke assembly (37)
in place.

32. Put screen (42) and filter (magnets) (43) in position in the transfer gear case.

33. Put cover (41) and gasket (40) in position on the case, and install the four bolts that hold it in
place.

34. Fasten tooling (C) and a hoist to the transmission case as shown.

35. Put the torque converter and transmission in position as a unit on the transfer gear case as shown.
Install bolts (44) that hold it in place.

36. Use a hoist, and put the torque converter, transmission and transfer gears in an upright position
on wooden blocks as shown.

37. Put wiring harness and clips (45) in position on cover (46). Install the bolts that hold them in
place.

38. Put tube assembly (47) in position on the transmission oil pump and transfer gear case. Install the
four bolts that hold it in place.
