SYLLABY

Study Program : Chemistry Education

Subject : Colloid and Interface Chemistry
Credit : 2 credits
Semester : 6th
Lecturer : Nazarudin, S.Si, M.Si, Ph.D
Prerequisite : Physical Chemistry 1 and Physical Chemistry 2

A. Description
This subject will enhance the student’s previous knowledge on physical chemistry 1 and 2 with specific discussion on colloid. During the
lecture the students will be given the knowledge about classification of colloidal systems, their properties, types of interfaces and their
application. The subject is mainly directed through oral presentation from the lecturer accompanied by several group discussions, controlled
individual learning and writing an article about an aspect in the subject area.

B. The Objective of Learning

a. Hard skill:

1. Understand the area of subject colloid and its relationship to surface science
2. Understand the classification, properties and the theories related to colloid
3. Understand the kinetic and optic properties of colloid

6
4. Understand the characteristic of solid – gas interface, liquid - gas interface and solid – liquid interface
5. Understand the interface muatan and be able to explain the phenomenom of electrokinetic and its background theory
6. Understand how colloidal is formed and stabilised in the colloidal system
7. Understand definition of rheology and the theory explaining the liquid flow
8. Understand the characteristic of emulsion and foam

b. Soft Skill:

The students have good communication skill, ICT skill, ability to work in a team, and ability to solve problems.

C. Learning Strategy

1. Focus on active learning for students in the classroom.

2. Self exploration or individual learning is one strategy for active learning in which the lecturer provides several tasks for students to do
outside the learning hour in the classroom. The tasks will be collected and marked by the lecturer.
3. Using both speech methods and discussion.
4. Speech method is used to conclude the important concepts which allow the student to be aware of the relationships between one topic and
the others. This method is also used to motivate the students to learn.
5. Discussion method is applied using group to group discussion. About 2 or 3 groups are given the same topic. These groups will present
the topic to the rest of the class. The group of the same topic will not only support each other during the presentation, but also give some
suggestion wherever possible.
6. The lecturer allocates some time during the learning hours for student to address some questions to the lecturer. The lecturer also
allocates some times during the learning hours in the classroom to ask the students about the topic learnt.
