International Film

Trois Couleurs: Bleu (1993)

Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the
screening, class discussions, text material and the article. / Relate what was discussed in class or the
text to the screening.

The greater universe of Three Colors, changed my perspective on the movie entirely.

After realizing that there are two other colors accompanied with this movie I am more inclined to

think that whatever questions I have will be answered in the other two movies that oversaturate

the colors red and white. France is known for their start in cinema but has yet to leave a mark on

the movie world except when festivals come around and those movies do not even feature

prominently French films; this film, however I can tell was a masterpiece in French culture and

truly was one of its peaked movies. The movie is heavy on the blue and shadows, relying on

setting and the actors non-verbal cues to sell a somber feeling and less on dialogue. The main

actress is finding herself and when I personally viewed it I got the sense of seeking

independence, with her leaving her home and getting a small apartment, her fear for rats and to

be relayed on by anyone or relay on anyone, you can see this in her persistent negative attitude

toward everyone she interacts with post her family’s death.

Find a related article and summarize the content.

I recently came across this article about the film that talked about the general concepts in

the article. The color schemes of the movie were an interesting pick on the director’s part. The

article found on Culture.pl summed up Julies intentions and reasons for moving in that manner.

According to the article, Julie is battling the past and the ebyse she is trying to avoid by moving

out and taking nothing but her blue beats and leaving everything to another account. This woman
escaped death stated the article as seen in the movie and is struggling to cope with that reality.

The article goes in and quotes the director himself and what he thought of the movie and why the

colors were shrouded like that in such a heavy way.

Apply the article to the film screened in class.

France is an interesting place. It has gone through a historical revolution and still till this

day people are still referencing this movement in any way shape or form. This movie was no

exception, even this movies broader universe of including the other colors was purposeful.

According to the site all the Three Color films allude to the French revolution and the color blue

was the first color in the trifecta. Their plots loosely reference the mottos of the revolution,

Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. The color blue white and red allude to the French flag according

to Culture.pl, a very interesting article that talk in detail about the movie and the director’s

intentions. With all of this in mind watching these films with the idea of liberty makes these

films more enjoyable. As stated in the beginning the fact that there are three other colors was an

interesting concept and peaked many peoples interest as well.
