Book/Text: The Daily 5: Fostering Literacy Independence in Elementary Grades (Second Edition) by
Gail Boushey and Joan Moser

Connector: Your job is to find connections between the book/text your group is reading and the
world outside. This means connecting the reading to your own life, to happenings at school or in the
community, to similar events at other times and places, to other people or problems that you are
reminded of, and to other events, people, and places in literature. You might also see connections
between this book and other writings on the same topic, or by the same author. There are no right
answers here. Whatever the reading connects you with is worth sharing!

Activity: "Clothes Line Connection"

In this activity, the participant will grab the picture card that represents a connection between the book
they are reading and one of the connection elements (text-to-self, text-to-world, or text-to-text). The
participant will then write their connection on the back of the picture card and hang in on the connection
line. After they hang all of their connection (at least 3, one on each connection element), the students will
read the connection cards aloud to their Lit Circle groups.

1. Text-to-World (School) – The Daily 5: Fostering Literacy Independence in Elementary Grades

mentions how at first, before The Daily 5, teachers thought accountability was for the teachers to
implement on the students. After the authors learned The Daily 5, they soon realized that
accountability was for the students to implement on themselves. When in my Field placement, I
have witnessed the teacher allowing her students to choose their own books and sit where they
choose throughout the room as long as they keep themselves accountable to their tasks and noise
level. This is exactly what Gail Boushey and Joan Moser are talking about in chapter 2.

2. Text-to-Self – In chapter 3 of The Daily 5: Fostering Literacy Independence in Elementary

Grades, the authors talk about the importance of teachers staying out of the way while the students
are doing their independent reading, but giving “the look” to students when they start to lose
stamina. I was always one of “those students” who had trouble staying on track for long periods of
time, I can remember vividly my teacher always giving me “the look” and I knew it was time to
redirect my attention back to my tasks. I remember I never felt like my teacher was getting on to
me, or singling me out, I merely felt like she was just wanting me to try my best to stay focused,
just as our textbook points out.

3. Text-to Text – Introduction to Early Childhood Education: Preschool Through Primary Grades
(6th Edition) by Jo Ann Brewer emphasis the importance on classroom set up and design. As I am
going through the teaching program at Tarleton State, I am learning that you cannot just throw
items in your classroom because they are “cute”. Planning your classroom design needs to be
strategic and each element needs to have purpose. The Daily 5: Fostering Literacy Independence
in Elementary Grades relates to this textbook because it has you think about where you will want
your child most comfortable when reading and how you will help them achieve their highest level
of comfortability, in order to be successful at reading.
