SUBJECT III. Read the text below. For questions 1-5, choose the correct answer A, B, C or
D: (2x5=10 points)

“Have you ever been in a library? Have you ever felt the smell? Probably, yes.

I first stepped in a library with my grandmother when I was in the 2nd grade. I could smell new ideas
just by walking in, the powerful smell of imagination coming from the laying books on the shelves
that wanted to be read. My grandmother was a Romanian teacher. She was the first one who read
fairy tales to me in my first years. My grandmother told me about the value of books and the
importance of reading and now I can say that books contain the best experiences and thoughts of
their writers. Writers put in their books not only their own ideas and feelings, but also what they
observe and find in society. As we read their books, we seem to see them appear before us. We
seem to talk with them and they also seem to instruct us through the picture of their books. Books
help us to improve our knowledge and even travel in our imagination.

I began reading at the age of 7 in the first grade, while I was learning to write. I began to read
stories, fairy tales, short novels, and books with hundreds of pages. But as time passed, the
number of books I read increased as well as my interest in reading.

Now I can read not only Romanian books, but also English books. I often ran across unfamiliar
words while reading, but I didn’t give up. As a result, I found that reading is more fun than it
seemed, and because it was entertaining, it helped me to expand my knowledge.

I feel that I can understand my friends better after reading many stories and novels. I am
sympathetic for their situation and if they make mistakes, I can forgive them easily. Most of my
friends said they are thankful to have a friend who understands them so well.

Try to choose good books from the very beginning and I guarantee you will never stop reading.
