| 3D Sound Right Around You
We saw Avatar re-launching the 3D Movie
industry. What you did not see is the amount of
research done on 3D sound. Recently Audionamix
was awarded an European grant for its project
i3DMusic.
i3DMusic will let people play with music
instruments or with the voice in 3D sound contexts.
Take your favorite song, pick one element of the
mix (for example the voice), and move its sound
in the room as if the acoustic source was really
inside, like a sound hologram.
i3DMusic is a collaborative project involving the
following organizations:
Audionamix (French company- audio source
separation), Sonic Emotion (Swiss company- 3D
sound), IRISA Metiss team (French academic
lab- audio source separation), EPFL (Ecole
Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne - Lema -
Swiss Academic Lab- acoustical measurements

When we were hiring professional sound engineers
in Los Angeles, for our brand new production
team, we did not know we would attract one
of Hollywood's preeminent audio engineering
instructors. Rick was brought to our attention
by one of his former student graduates from the
world renowned Musicians Institute in Hollywood,
California. Rick has taught thousands of students
the art of professional audio engineering.
Rick Silva is now our VP of Production.
He has written and produced music for television
commercials for companies such as Sony and
Sanyo, and he has engineered, mixed, and
mastered CD’s for clients ranging from jazz-fusion
greats Scott Henderson and Jeff Richman, to
rock guitar gods - Paul Gilbert, Gary Hoey, and
Dweezil Zappa.
Rick is also a published author and video host
for Hal Leonard and Alfred publishing. His most
recent releases are Power Tools for Pro Tools 8
and Power Tools for Logic Pro 9. Rick is currently
working on a Modern Mixing Techniques book
that will feature some of Audionamix proprietary
technology.
Rick’s production studio was also the first
Accredited Training Facility for Waves plug-in
certification training in the Los Angeles area, and
it is now the proud home base of Audionamix
production in the United States.

| Psycho at Cannes
Hollywood was not our only walk down the red
carpet this year. Audionamix proudly collaborated
with Universal Studios (Home Entertainment) on a
brand new fully remastered version of the horror
cult classic Psycho.
Audionamix worked with the sound engineers
at BluWave Audio (Universal’s in-house post
production sound facility) to provide separated
elements to add a sense of depth to the iconic
film’s music score which was originally created
by Philippe Hermann for Alfred Hitchock. Fifty
years later, a new generation of moviegoers was
introduced to Norman Bates and his mother to
decide for themselves whether or not it is safe to
shower. A spectacular media reception followed
the Cannes Classic screening with interviews
ranging from Hollywood Reporter to Wired
magazine.

The brand new version of a 22 year old Dame Vera
Lynn singing “We’ll Meet Again” accompanied by
the Fron Male Voice Choir was made possible thanks

isolated for the first time with the help of our voice
extraction technology. Commenting on the new
recording, Dame Vera Lynn said: “I’m amazed this

| Scorsese at Blu-Con
During the 2009 Blu-Con conference, the 2nd
congress for Blu-Ray innovation, Martin Scorsese
gave a speech highlighting the importance of sound
in the context of movies. He talked extensively about
the re-mastering of soundtracks of classic films
and how he is a great believer in new technologies
that help render home theatre experiences even
more like the original theatrical representation. For
Scorsese, Blu-Ray is the closest you can get to
watching a film at home the way it was meant to
be seen. Although he believes that it is important
to maintain the integrity of the original format such
as the aspect ratio and the colour, he is not averse
to enhancing or changing the soundtracks of older
films in order to improve the experience. In fact, he
himself worked on a new mixed-mono soundtrack
for Taxi Driver which was originally in stereo. He
faced issues such as the dialogue being hidden
behind the music and had to try and reintroduce a
balance here. He also commented that people are
now used to sound being everywhere around them
when watching a film so with the introduction of
Blu-ray, we have the luxury of including the original
sound but also a “surround sound” track. For him,
like for us at Audionamix, sound really does matter!

Audionamix is a new company. We were formerly
known as Mist Technolgies, but a new name
was definitely in order to explain the dynamic
new sound experience we can create with your
old content. After several years of research
in the field of Signal Processing where we
focused our efforts on the so-called Holy Grail
“Source Separation”, Audionamix has achieved
incredible breakthroughs and is capable to offer
unprecedented sound solutions for audio and
video professionals.
On November 2008, I was offered the amazing
opportunity to lead this company and in so doing,
thereby transform a Research Lab into one of the
most preeminent companies operating today in
the Audio and Video industry. This is my challenge

Audionamix’s new strategy was based on

| Audionamix Joins DEG | Audionamix Has Moved

The Digital Entertainment Group is a Los Angeles-
based industry-funded nonprofit corporation that
advocates and promotes the many benefits
associated with physical and digital entertainment
while providing updated information to both the
media and the retail trade.
The DEG offers a forum for member companies
to engage in ongoing discussions concerning
various opportunities, which relate to other new
digital technologies, the environment and other

asked me if it would be possible to isolate the

that cannot be done with today’s tools, but I

This technology truly worked for the Armstrong
track. Unfortunately, the original itself was a
poor quality transfer so we are looking for a
better original source, but if we can find it, and
get past the legal reservations, we should be
able to release a new Louis Armstrong track.”

| Coppelia Studios: On Air
Coppelia Studios is a proeminent top post
production company in Paris, providing services

After more than a decade leading the sound
department at the famous Copra Studios (whose
clients include TF1, Canal+, Pathé, Gaumont...),
Philippe’s quite savvy when it comes to post-
production-dailies synchronization, mixing,
recording and sound editing. Always on the
lookout for the best solution scratching a particular
itch, he has challenged many times Audionamix’
innovative source separation technology.
Let’s hear what he has to say about it.
How does it differ from other remastering
solutions?
“It sticks out because it creates a new material
one can use while remixing, whereas the others
do nothing.”
How does it actually work?
“Let’s consider the simple example of a piece
of music involving a saxophone and a piano. If
the source is mono or stereo, the notes of both
instruments are initially mixed together. Never
mind: the Audionamix algorithm processing the
track has memorized the sound prints of both
instruments. Thanks to those, when the sax plays,
the program will be able to recognize and pull its
score out. The same goes for the piano. A little
bit of computing later, both tracks are extracted,
producing the expected result: one track per
instrument.”

| Dreyfus: A Very Lively Back Catalog
Oriane de Torcy, export manager for the Francis
Dreyfus Music label, is the happy winner of the
prize draw we organized during the latest Cannes
music market. Created more than four decades
ago by Francis Dreyfus, this label stays totally
independent even though Sony Music France
distributes it.
It manages the back catalog of top shots like
Jean-Michel Jarre, Alan Stivell, Bernard Lavilliers
or Christophe. However, it focuses on jazz with the
label Dreyfus Jazz created in 1991. From classical
references like Ella Fitzgerald or Chet Baker (the
“Jazz Référence series” - 70 titles, over a million
albums sold) to the huge Michel Petrucciani, we’ll
also find today’s talents: Marcus Miller, Biréli
Lagrène, Sylvain Luc, Franck Avitabile, Jean-
Michel Pilc or Richard Galliano. They sport a
flawless artistic quality, in graphics as much
as in sound.
Furthermore, every Dreyfus edition involves the
full commitment of the whole team. “Most of our
artists are alive. They give concerts, record a new
album about every 18 months, coming up with new
concepts. Despite the crisis of the music industry,
we keep signing new talents.”, says Oriane de
Torcy. “When it comes to our back catalog,
which includes the ‘Jazz Référence’ collection,
every recording is carefully remastered, the
disturbances removed. We open the sound and
spatialize it to power it up. The end result? For
instance, it sounds like Billie Holiday attended a
new recording session yesterday.”

and René Ameline of the Ferber studios. The
artistic direction is shared between talents such as
Francis Dreyfus, his daughter Chloé, and Claude
Carrière, well-known among jazz enthusiasts.

Jeff Sheridan is the founder of Soundworks

| Audionamix’s Technology at the Service

Great composers’ masterpieces last forever but
it is not the case of the media supports on which
they are stored. Demanding listeners constantly
renew their collections, thus offering publishers
the chance to renew and improve theirs offers.
Editions Atlas, who publishes cultural products for
wide audiences, chose Audionamix’s technology
to remaster “Eternelle Musique Classique”. These
series of a total of 600 CDs gather the essential
works of the repertoire of Verdi, Bach, Beethoven,
Mahler, Mozart... for an ever clearer and more
beautiful sound.
| 2009 the Year of the Blu-Ray: X-ray
According to Josh Dreuth of Blu-ray.com, 2009
will be “the year of blu-ray movies”. Chosen last
year as the standard format for high definition
videos, blu-ray technology started invading
households through box tops and the Sony PS3.
This trend was reinforced by competitive prices
and industry strategies to support the trend. The
entertainment industry has a lot to win here, in a
global crisis context and a saturated DVD market,
back catalogs represent an interesting market
opportunity.
Marketing strategies currently implemented by the
industry (back catalog packages and other special
offers or bonuses) let predict a huge increase in
blu-ray sales. This is where Audionamix plays an
essential role. For historical reasons, back catalog
soundtracks were originally conserved in stereo
or even mono. Next to high definition pictures
on blu-ray, a poor sound quality will disappoint
the audience. Presently, only Audionamix is
able to supply studios with new stems enabling
the upgrade of a project from mono or stereo to
true surround 5.1 or 7.1 sound. The blu-ray and

| SARAH, One Step Towards a

Audionamix, specialized in professional audio
software, has been coordinating the project Sarah
since April 2007. This marks a new milestone
on the path to developing a simple and efficient
software solution for high-end audio remastering.
The research works induced by the project are lead
collaboratively with the Image Signal Treatment
Department (TSI) at TELECOM ParisTech. The
evaluation of performances and the ergonomy
of the solution are validated by post-production
studios Copra, whose experience and skills are

It’s a pleasure to welcome you to the Audionamix
monthly newsletter.
In case you haven’t heard about it yet, Audionamix
is the brand for Mist-Technologies. While we hold
steadfast to the principle stating a rose, by any
name is still and always will be a rose, we are
confident that our new name will attract greater
interest for our products. For those of you who
don’t know me, my name is Dorothée Lenté and I
will be responsible for keeping you up to date about
the latest Audionamix’ developments. Every month,
not only will I share new company information with
you, but I will also mention exactly how clients are
using our products and technology, as well as keep
you updated with regards to the dynamic market in
which we operate.
| Using our Technology...
What do we do? We offer an increased sensory
experience to both new and old movies. As
you already know, sound is a critical element
that brings emotions to a movie. For decades,
sound engineers have been trying to separate
the various sound sources electronically. Source
separation aims at splitting apart different sounds
(instruments, voices, noises). Until now, no
existing technology managed to reproduce this
natural operation in efficiently enough to use it in
the context of audiovisual medias. Audionamix
is the first company to come up with an actual
solution to separate sound sources.

Why mention La Vie en Rose? In part because
we are French, but also because Audionamix is
proud to say its technology was used in the movie
to separate Piaf’s unique voice from her original
recordings to offer a truly dynamic sound in
Surround 5.1. Very soon, we will release a “Making
Off” movie showing how and why our technology
was used to offer such a unique sound experience.

To demonstrate how the market could use our
technology, we decided to attend all major
tradeshows and conferences in the Sound
industry. After all, it’s about sound is our new
leitmotiv and we are proud to demonstrate the
technological breakthrough our team was capable
to achieve.

What can be achieved with this type of
technology? You may remember that Marion
Cotillard for the movie La Môme (aka La Vie en
Rose) won the Academy Award for Best Actress
in 2008. The same year, La Môme received both
the Czech Lions and the César for Best Sound
while being nominated for Best Music in several
other award ceremonies.
