Artificial Intelligence Advances in

Military Ranks(I)
Rapid advances across the field of artificial intelligence have resulted in computers more
capable of processing information as humans or animals do, allowing the machines to
learn, adapt and decide for themselves.(II) Over the past five decades, artificial intelligence
(AI) research has splintered into subcategories, including robotics, machine learning, image
processing and natural language processing.(III) Researchers are linking together the power
of the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and cloud computing to create a personal
assistant to provide total situational awareness to first responders.(IV) A groundbreaking
artificial intelligence (AI) project seeks to have sensors accepting and transmitting
information in a method similar to the human brain.(V)

 In December 2014, Stephen Hawking, the renowned theoretical physicist, warned the
world that true artificial intelligence (AI) could mean the death of mankind.(VI)
 Hawking’s statement did complement a blast by Elon Musk, Tesla CEO and a strong
advocate of driverless cars, who two months prior at the MIT Aeronautics and
Astronautics Department's 2014 Centennial Symposium responded to the discussion
about AI by saying, “With artificial intelligence, we are summoning the demon.”.(VII)
 By the year 2040, we can expect to have general artificial intelligence comparable to
humans, according to William Halal, chairman of TechCast Global.(VIII)

To ease the load on weary warfighters inundated with too much information, U. S. Navy
scientists are turning to artificial intelligence and cognitive reasoning technologies.
Solutions that incorporate these capabilities could fill a broad array of roles, such as
sounding the alarm when warfighters are about to make mistakes.(IX)

 By employing artificial intelligence, the U. S. Army is raising video games to a new level to
create virtual communities populated by hundreds of thousands of fully developed
characters. Combining computer game technology, a little show business magic and the
expertise of some very clever research engineers, these training tools can be used to
practice traditional warfighting techniques as well as to rehearse new skills such as
conducting effective negotiation and understanding cultural influences.(X)
 The notion of robots as trusted companions on the battlefield is no longer limited to the
scope of science fiction or TV adventure. With the U. S. Army's Robotics Collaborative
Technology Alliance and its members forging ahead on autonomous technologies,
warfighters may just very well have their own "Lassie" to save the day.(XI)

Military artificial intelligence programs are making humans, not systems, the focus of
their development efforts as they study methods to make tools easier to use. Programs
are being focused on using artificial intelligence to free people for the most important
tasks and incorporating automation to save lives.(XII)
 Sophisticated, pattern-recognizing artificial intelligence agents are solving quandaries
faced by organizations that are being inundated by massive amounts of information. The
design of these technodrones is based on the characteristics of structures that allow the
human body to function. It enables systems administrators, both military and
commercial, to monitor and pre-empt network catastrophes and allows corporate
leaders to tap available data and take advantage of opportunities.(XIII)
 Software designers are applying artificial intelligence principles to new computer
security systems. These tools and protocols create the potential for agile software capable
of quickly identifying and responding to new threats.(XIV)
