You didn’t said anything about “Research career” so i will leave that aspect in my
answer.
1. Money
3. Social Status
Money
If you love money you should go for private companies after doing M. Tech. from IIT .
Your Mtech Fees would be less than the stipend provided to IIT M. Tech students for
ex. In IIT kgp annual fee is around 85000 and the MHRD stipend is 12500/month ie
1.5 lakh per year.
But there is a catch, If you are from a non CS/IT/ECE branch only 10% of your class
would get 10lpa+ package(Maybe even less). And forget about 100% placement . 100%
placement is a myth. The average package in iit kgp M. Tech CS is around 13lpa and
close to 90%. class gets placed(But this is the best case in all IITs , IIT kgp has the
highest place percentage in M. Tech CSE ).
Now coming to PSU’s. Trying to regain internet connection... Hide this message.
2. IOCL - 11.6 lpa (It has increased recently but i don’t know how much)
4. GAIL - 10.6
5. NTPC - ~10.4
2. ISRO/DRDO - around 10
And this will increase by around 30–40% after the PSU pay revision in 2017.
So money wise PSU is a better choice if you are not an above average student ( Above
average In IIT not in some private college).
PSU’s life is way better than in some private company and you will have a 9–5 job with
not so strict deadlines(Compared to private companies, We have a lot of work but the
stress level is not so high) .
Social Status
Social Status is good in either ways. But PSU will get you a lot more attention(people
go crazy about Govt. Jobs in INDIA ).
Note: Getting a PSU is way more harder than getting an IIT so keep this in mind(I
myself didnt even receive interview call for PGCIL but got direct admission(Without
Interview) in 2/3 IIT’s ) .

What do you think the package might be for a gate aspirant who is eligible for
attending the interviews of PSUs. It is obviously high!
Many Public sectors like POWER GRID, HPCL, ONGC, BARC, GAIL offer as high as 11
–14 lakhs as the starting package. One of my cousins scored an All India Rank between
50–60 (I dont remember the exact rank) in mechanical stream in GATE-2014. He told
me that he had received interview letters from almost all the PSUs and he also
mentioned that ONGC has offered around 11 lpa to him. Imagine a cental govt
company offering 11 lpa for a fresher!
Here is the list of companies which offer high packages for an aspirant through GATE.
The highest package will be around 14lakhs and the average will be around 7–8 lakhs
by PSUs every year. And the least would be around 5 lakhs.

I may not come off with exact packages, but highest package is offered by Power Grid
Corporation of India Limited, which is somewhere more than 13 L.P.A(Electrical or
Electronics graduates only). Some other Maharatna Companies like ONGC, HPCL,
IOCL, BPCL etc also offers package of around 11-12 Lakhs. The least package you'll get,
may be around 7.5-8 L.P.A. So in an average, your package will be around 10 L.P.A.
(And don't forget the proposal of 7th Pay Commission. Which may increase the
packages.)
But the problem is that these PSU's hire mostly Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical and
Civil graduates. Electronics or Instrumentation graduates have comparatively few
posts. Computers or IT graduates have very few posts. Hardly around 50 altogether
may be.
Now, if you are a computer graduate from premier institute like an IIT or NIT or BITS
or some other top colleges, you may get some better packages than these. For other
branches, these PSU's offer the best package in India. You may get better package but
in that case, your job location will be outside India. But then, there are many
advantages of job in a PSU. Like,
• Job security
• Govt. Holidays
• Flexible Timings
• Pension Schemes

• And not to forget the 'respect' or 'reputation' in society.(_/\_)

But nonetheless, in my opinion, these jobs are worth giving a shot, unless otherwise
you want to go for higher studies or some other field like IAS or some other fields.
Hope it helps.
P.S. The stats and statements I made are based on general information. Exceptions
may be there, But such exceptions happen rarely. So decision is up to you.
Edit: As suggested by Shashank Dubey, 7th Pay Commission is not applicable for
PSU's, but next year, i.e. 2017, pay commission for PSU's will come into effect. It's
going to be third Pay Commission for these. But it's effect will be almost same (not
exactly same) as 7th pay commission on salary.
