About the same amount of power is transmitted/received in all directions by most of

the antennas. But some time we prefer

the power of a very narrow beam of electromagnetic (EM) waves to be

transmitted/received in a specific direction over the

prior. For example, in a Radar system, the power of a very narrow beam is
transmitted in a specific direction and then

that narrow beam is received after hitting the target. With the help of this they
determine distance to the target and

direction of the target. But on the contrary side if it were to send the EM waves
in all directions, then they cant

determine the location of the target and hence this destroys the very purpose of
the Radar systems. So in this case we

want the antenna to transmit a very narrow beam of EM waves. But it is very
difficult to design an antenna that has a

very narrow beam. It means when the size of the antenna is made bigger, the beam of
that will be narrow. The satellite

and TV antennas are the examples in this case. But the main problem with these
antennas is that they are bigger in size

and are very heavy.
