Students have been learning about the concept of ‘liveability’, including how liveability is assessed, the top and bottom ranked liveable cities in the world and have created
their own personal liveability criteria. They have developed geographical skills in mapping, graphing and analysis. Students are familiar with school values such as respect for all
and trying their best.

Intro to Global Liveability 5 T introduces lesson to Ss: Last week focused on one specific Data projector and screen
minutes place and improving liveability, today we will be zooming
out to investigate improving liveability globally. Prepared PPT with:
- Human Development Index map
T shows Ss map discussed last lesson of 2017 Human
Development Index. Directs Ss to look carefully. As discussed
last week, still certain areas where liveability is not good and
needs to be improved. Asks Ss to show based on map where
these areas might be.
DEVELOPMENT
Video: Malala introducing The World’s 10 T introduces to Ss video to be shown. Hands out scaffolding Data projector and screen

T plays video (6m20s) Pre-prepared worksheet with scaffolding questions.


At conclusion of video T goes through answers to worksheet
questions with Ss, reminding Ss to raise hands to answer.
Task 1: Find out more about SDGs 15 T explains activity to Ss - researching a little more about the Data projector and screen
minutes SDGs and thinking about which is the most important.
Prepared PPT with:
T tells Ss they have 10 minutes to complete activity. Can - Instructions for Task 1
work in pairs but keep volume to low.

During activity, T circulates around classroom.

T regains quiet and asks for S responses/findings from


research. Particular focus on Q3 to prompt deeper thinking.
Examples of SDGs in action: UnitingWorld 5 T explains SDGs are big-picture look at improving the lives of Data projector and screen
minutes people in developing countries. Now we will zoom in and
look at some examples of that. Prepared PPT with:
- Photo of work in India
T relates this to own previous work.
Task 2: NGO Research 10 T explains second task for Ss research one of the three NGOs Data projector and screen
minutes listed and answer questions:
1. What does the NGO do? Prepared PPT with:
(Hint: Is there a mission statement or NGO goal?) - Instructions for Task 2
2. Which countries does the NGO work in?
3. How does the NGO improve liveability in the
world?
(For example: Education or health programs?)

Ss are given 10 minutes to work on this and complete for


homework.

T to ensure Ss have written task in their books and can


begin, finish off for homework.
CLOSURE
Wrap up and homework set 5 T allocates homework for students from textbook, ensures
minutes homework is listed in S diaries.

Overview of next 2 lessons – group work about one


unliveable city/country and what can be done to improve.
