2.3 When one person shouts at a soccer match, the sound intensity level at the center of the field
is 60 dB. When all the people shout together, the intensity level increases to 109 dB.
Assuming that each person generates the same sound intensity at the center of the field, how

2.4. Two loudspeakers 42.0 m apart and facing each other emit identical 115 Hz sinusoidal sound
waves that are exactly out of phase. Suzan is walking along a line between the speakers. As
she walks, she finds herself moving through loud and quite spots. If Suzan stands 19.5 m from

2.5. Astronomers have discovered a planetary system orbiting the star Upsilon Andromedae, which

distance of 1.2 x 1011 m from the star. Using visible light with a vacuum wavelength of 550 nm,
what is the minimum necessary aperture diameter that a telescope must have so that it can

3.1. State the Principle of conservation of Linear momentum (in words) [3]
3.2. The magnitudes of the four displacement vectors shown in the drawing are

directional angle for the resultant that occurs when these vectors are added together. [7]
3.3. A log is floating on swiftly moving water. A stone is dropped from rest from an 80.0m bridge
and lands on the log as it passes under the bridge. If the log moves with a constant speed of
8.0 m/s, what is the horizontal distance between the log and the bridge when the stone is
released? [4]
3.4. The figure below shows a block of mass of 0.35kg which is released from rest at a height of
3.0m above a horizontal surface. The block slides along the side of a horizontal circular hoop
of radius R. What is the speed of the mass at the bottom of the hoop? [3]
3.5. A 0.3 kg bullet of mass is fired horizontally at a constant speed of 65m/s into a stationary
wooden block of mass M = 15kg. The bullet instantaneously comes to rest in the block. The
block with the embedded bullet slides along a horizontal surface with a coefficient of kinetic
friction, µk = 0.125. Determine:
