1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Days gone when glass was quite recently used to cover window openings or entryways, in
this day and age glass implies considerably more than some other designing material.
Glass is a standout amongst the most classy and royal choice to pamper the universe of
interior design.

It comes in such a large amount of various assortment, thickness, decisions, designs, and
surface and above all its adaptable quality makes it flawlessly appropriate for any formal or
casual spaces.

Huge changes have occurred in the realm of design and architecture with the little bits of
glass, plan thought of utilizing glass material. For the window dressing as well as utilized for
any sort of furniture, flooring, wall partition, ceiling design and to enhance the excellence of
design development. It is a standout amongst the most effective and splendid component to
design and architecture of today's construction.

Today, the glass partitions are seen not only in commercial office interiors but also in multi-
unit residential projects such as condominiums and rental lofts, as well as hotel rooms and
even along corridors at many other places. The glass partition products are extremely
diverse and can be used in virtually all types of settings which is increasing its demand.

The popularity of glass interior partitions, made of aluminum or other metal frames and
glass panels, is borne out by their increasing use and availability. Glass walls and glass
sliding doors are seen as space-savers, maximizing the value of real estate. They can also
improve the flexibility of open spaces, another significant benefit.

More than anything else, glass walls bring the opportunity for layered spatial programming
relative to the building envelope. This means that a glass partition layer may be introduced
inboard of the perimeter walls, to provide a new use area without reducing daylight
penetration or views to outdoors

2.1 GLASS
2.2 PROPERTIES OF GLASS
2.3 TYPES OF GLASS

GLASS IN INTERIORS 5
AAYOJAN SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

2.1 GLASS
Glass is a strong and transparent material that is utilized as a part of various applications in
our everyday lives. It is made from natural and abundant raw materials (sand, soda ash and
limestone) that are liquefied at high temperature to shape another material glass. At high
temperature glass is basically like fluids, however at ambient temperature it behaves like
solids. Therefore, glass can be poured, blown, press and formed into a lot of shapes.

The flexibility of glass continues expanding as researchers find new applications to this
material. Glass is currently being utilized in the building industry as insulation material,
structural component, external glazing material, cladding material, it is used to make
delicate looking fenestrations on external facades and also conventional windows. With the
coming of green technology in construction, glass is constantly experiencing change.Solar
power glass, switchable glass projection screens are a couple of the more current and
newer uses.

Figure 3: Glass In Architecture

GLASS IN INTERIORS 6
AAYOJAN SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

2.2 PROPERTIES OF GLASS

2.2.1 TRANSPARENCY
This property allows visual connection with the outside world. Its transparency can be
permanently altered by adding admixtures to the initial batch mix. By the advent of
Technology clear glass panels used in buildings can be made opaque. (electro chromatic
Glazing)

2.2.2 U VALUE
The u-value is the measure of how much heat is transferred through the window. The lower
the u-value the better the insulation properties of the glass– the better it is at Keeping the
heat or cold out.

2.2.3 STRENGTH
Glass is a brittle material but with the advent of science and technology, certain laminates
and admixtures can increase its modulus of rupture( ability to resist deformation under
load).

2.2.4 GREENHOUSE EFFECT

The greenhouse effect refers to a situation where the short wave lengths of visible light
from the sun pass through glass and are absorbed but the longer infrared re-radiation from
the heated objects are unable to pass through the glass. This trapping results in more
heating and a higher resultant temperature.

2.2.5 WORKABILITY
It is capable of being worked in many ways. It can be blown, drawn or pressed. It is
possible To obtain glass with diversified properties- clear, colorless, diffused and stained.
glass can also bewelded by fusion.

2.2.6 RECYCLABLE
Glass is 100% recyclable, cullets (scraps of broken or waste glass gathered for re-melting)
Are used as raw materials in glass manufacture, as aggregates in concrete Construction
etc.

GLASS IN INTERIORS 7

2.2.7 SOLAR HEAT GAIN COEFFICIENT

It is the fraction of incident solar radiation that actually enters a building through the Entire
window assembly as heat gain.

2.2.8 VISIBLE TRANSMITTANCE

Visible transmittance is the fraction of visible light that comes through the glass.

2.2.9 ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND ACOUSTIC CONTROL

energy-efficient glazing is the term used to describe the double glazing or triple glazing
Use in modern windows in homes. Unlike the original single glazing or old double Glazing,
energy-efficient glazing incorporates coated (low-emissivity) glass to prevent heat
Escaping through the windows. The air barrier also enhances acoustic control.

Figure 4 : Glass Partition Wall Figure 5: Glass Partition Wall

GLASS IN INTERIORS 8

2.3 TYPES OF GLASS USED IN PARTITIONS

2.3.1. PATTERNED GLASS OR TEXTURED GLASS

As the name suggests, patterned glass has a decorative design embossed on its surface. It
could be a colorful geometric pattern, or just a plain texture. It is most useful in spaces
which require privacy but also need sufficient light transmission. The texture on the glass
surface prevents a clear view of the object when seen through the glass. It has its
applications in conference rooms, foyers, restaurants, shower cubes, etc.

Figure 6: Patterned Glass Wall

2.3.2 SPANDREL GLASS

Spandrel glass is mostly used to disguise the less aesthetically pleasing structural elements
like columns, walls, shear walls, beams and so on. It comes in plenty of colors and hence
can be used in versatile locations to compliment the interiors. It is opaque and reflective in
nature. The uniform appearance of the Spandrel glass gives a neat look to the space. It can
be used to cover the kitchen cabinets and walls instead of tiling.

Figure 7:Spandrel Glass Wall

GLASS IN INTERIORS 9
AAYOJAN SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

2.3.3 TINTED GLASS

Tinted glass is manufactured by adding metal oxides to float glass. While the typical colors
used are bronze, gray, dark gray, green, blue, blue-green, many other colors like red, pink,
purple can also be manufactured.
Different metal oxides when mixed with float glass, render different colors to it. Due to its
tint it prevents heat transmission and absorbs solar energy. This is not ideal glass if you
desire to transmit light since it hinders with light transmission.

Figure 8: Tinted Glass Wall

2.3.4 REFLECTIVE GLASS

Reflective glass is a clear glass with a metallic coating which reflects heat. It is used in Eco-
friendly constructions to reduce the energy consumption of the buildings. It prevents heat
loss from the interior of the building and heat gain from outside the building.
While the finish is usually metallic it can also be given a tinted appearance. Another
advantage of using reflective glass is that it reduces the glare which is provides comfortable
working environments in the office or home.

Figure 9:Reflective Glass Wall

2.3.5 SATIN GLASS (PRIVACY GLASS)

It has a satin finish as the name suggests. It is chemically treated to give the desired finish
on the surface. It can also be used as a partition wall in retail spaces or hotels where one
requires privacy as it blurs the view. Due to this property it can be utilized in fabricating a
door in association with another material such as wood. It is a low maintenance product as
it prevents the dust from sticking on to its surface. The finger marks don’t get printed on the
skin of stained glass unlike another glasses.

Figure 10:Satin Glass Wall

2.3.6 SECURITY GLASS

Security glass can either be laminated or toughened. Laminated glass is an engineered
glass which holds its pieces together in an event of disaster. It is so strong that it is even
capable of withstanding a bullet attack.
Toughened glass is also a popular choice for table tops since it prevents cuts and injuries
due to broken glass.

Figure 11: Security Glass Wall

2.3.7 GLASS BLOCKS

Glass blocks, or glass bricks, are a building material similar in shape to brick, made from
glass or acrylic, and used to create walls and windows. They are a great way to bring light
into your home without sacrificing privacy. Light comes through them, but you cannot see
through them.

Figure 12: Glass Blocks

2.3.8 ACOUSTIC GLASS

This type of glass has acoustic properties and thus is most suitable in areas with high noise
pollution. The glass has a double glazed arrangement of which the inner layer damps out
any belligerent noises. It absorbs and weakens noises thus reducing the decibels heard by
humans.
Acoustic glass finds its application in diverse spaces like office space, conference rooms,
music studios, hospitals, libraries, residential houses and retail spaces.

Figure 21: Glass Thickness

4.1.1 GLASS SLIDING WALL

This system consists of independent glass panels that can be slid away, round any angle,
allowing for complete opening, with the panels concertinaed at one or both ends. The
glass panels are hardened, notably expanding their mechanical aspects (flexion,
compression, effect resistance). Furthermore, in the event of breakage the glass shatters
into small pieces, avoiding the risk of serious injuries.

Sliding glass wall partitions can be frameless and aluminium or wooden framed.
Glass of thickness 1/2" and 3/4" is used.
This system is used for spatial planning that is flexible, efficient and visually arresting.
Operated manually, horizontal sliding walls allow rooms to be merged Or divided with
ease. It also ensures security room division.

4.1.4 DOUBLE GLAZED GLASS WALLS

Insulating glass is more commonly known as double glazing that consists of two or three
glass panels which are separated by vacuum or gas filled space to minimize the heat
transfer across the building .
This system has high acoustic performance.
Its consistent detail and glass properties expand its acoustic performance that it could
accomplish.

Figure 25: Double Glazed Glass Wall

4.1.5 FOLDING GLASS WALLS

They really feel like an entire wall gets put away completely. The folding glass wall gives
the feeling of breaking down the barriers between any two spaces and with the sliding door
half of the doorway is always going to remain covered. The amount of space that the
folding glass walls will take away when they are opened depends upon the number of
glass panels used and also the width, height and thickness of the panels.
This system is space invaders as it can boost your space by opening it into another space.

4.1.6 HIGH WALL

High wall system is innovative, contemporary looking that completely supports the interior
partition system. It is based on the concept of structural facades with the use of vertical
glass panels. Glass, poly-carbonate and wood , all are compatible with the support
components.
This System is particularly suited to offices, retail spaces and trade fairs.
This design allows for the movement, reconfiguration and relocation of the connection
elements with minimal holes in the main support Structure.
Clear Tempered, Low Iron, Laminated glass is used.

5.1 OPPORTUNITIES IN GLASS PARTITIONS

5.1.1 LAMINATED SANDWITCH GLASS WALL

Laminated glass is a sandwich made of one piece of plastic known as Poly Vinyl Butyral
which is put between two or more glasses. These PVB stick with the glass, and forms a
chemical as well as mechanical bond. When this is laminated with a annealed glass, this
layer maintains the geometric integrity of the pane in case of breakage.
Thickness - 4mm/5mm/6mm glass + 0.38mm/0.76mm/1.52mmPVB +4mm/5mm/6mm
glass
It gives acoustic insulation and also protects against damage caused due to UV radiation
because it slashes almost 99% of the UV radiation that is present in the sunlight.
This Laminated glass is considered as a safety glass by most of the standards and it is
also aesthetically appealing.
This glass is used in partition walls, windows and doors, skylights and canopies
facades and curtain walls.

Figure 29: Laminated Glass Wall

5.1.2 SWITCHABLE SMART GLASS

Switchable glass which is also known as Privacy glass is an electric switchable glass with
an adjustable opacity. It uses electro-chromatic technology to get interchanged between
transparent and an opaque state by applying the required voltage.

Privacy smart glass can change from clear glass to a frosted one at the flick of a switch
while allowing light to pass through it from both the sides. It can be controlled manually or
automatically. An automated control can be programmed to switch on or off during certain

times of day or the system can be connected to light sensors to get them activated, when a
certain level of light is detected. Alternatively, it can be programmed to get activated with
movement sensors, remote controls, and standard button switches.
Another interesting feature of this glass is that when it is in the opaque state, it acts as a
high-definition rear projection screen.

Privacy Glass is a laminated glass. The laminated material within is a liquid crystal privacy
film, which responds to an electrical current. When the power is off, the liquid crystal
molecules are randomly oriented and will scatter an incidental light. This renders the glass
panel as opaque. When an electric current is applied, the liquid crystal molecules lineup,
the incidental light passes through and makes the privacy glass clear.

5.1.3 3D GLASS WALL

It's a 3D wall panel design of glass with patterns and abstractions that create a 3D effect.
The thickness of this panel is 4-6 mm. Tempered glass is the only material used in this 3D
paneling which increase the strength of these 3D glass wall panel design by 5-6 times as
compared to the conventional glass.
Under normal conditions it is difficult to break this glass. And, if some damage occurs, it
shatters into small pieces.

Figure 31: 3D Glass Block Wall

3D textured glass block wall looks like a series of asymmetrical pyramids jutting out, or a
unique series of trapezoid one over another – or cylinders that are stacked on top of
another cylinder.
It can be used in a divider wall, loft space, shower, hotel lobby or a unique upscale home.
With an asymmetrical pyramid and diamond shape - this block has a prominent 3D shape
on one side of the glass block.

5.1.4 GLASS WALL WITH LASER ENGRAVING

The glass wall with laser engraving has photon beams with over 20,000 degrees that alter
the inside structure of the glass, without touching the surface and without any significant
impact on the static properties of the glass. This point by point laser engraving in tiny
nanometer steps, result in high resolution images with a stunning precision.

With this laser engraving, the in-glass visualization of any given illustration or photo is
possible. The laser finishing system for float-glass processing allows in-glass engraving for
large size Insulated Glass Units. It also helps in the surface engraving of safety glass
doors and safety glass walls and even 3D images inside miniature glass elements.

Glass materials with adequate thickness can even be engraved with 3D figures. Photos
can even be converted to a 3D image and can be engraved right into the glass pane, and it
does not alter the glass surface at all.

Individual images, photos, logos and text can be engraved under the glass surface and is
also easy to clean (the engraving inside the glass) and gives a stunning effect with
integrated illumination.

5.1.5 LED GLASS WALL

LED glass is a glass that comes alive with interplay of light
and color. LED in glass is a system offering infinite
possibilities for indoor and outdoor use, creating dynamic and
interactive architectures and ambiences highlighting design
and the creation of communication structures (walls and
media facades).
It is easy to maintain with simple remote control design and preprogramming and has
homogeneous lighting and is relatively transparent while in the 'off' position.
It brings glass to life by using lights and colors, both during the day as well as at night. Led
glass walls are used in walls, floors, ceilings, doors, furnishings, fitting rooms etc.

5.1.6 Glass Blocks

Glass bricks also known as glass blocks are hollow solid translucent architectural items
manufactured from glass. Glass blocks are widely used in homes and offices as they look
good and are cost effective.
These are available in different shapes, sizes, colours and surfaces.

8. CONCLUSIONS
There are various functional and aesthetical attributes of glass partition walls used in
interior spaces. The functional attributes of glass partitions are acoustics, flexibility, cost
effectiveness and durability , openness and privacy combined.
The aesthetical attributes of glass partition walls are transparency , visually appealing,
light and nature.

There are many wall systems available in glass partitions such as movable
partitions, stationery partitions, framed or frame-less partitions, a mixture of
plasterboard/aluminum and glass walls and even colored glass partitions.
.
With the innovations and advancements in the construction techniques and the use of
technology , glass partitions offers many new opportunities where as in timber partitions
there are no such advancements or use of technology.
Due to technological advancements in glass partitions , the use of glass partitions has
increased in offices and residences as compared to timber partition walls.

In offices , the design and layout of a space can have an enormous impact on employee
morale and performance. Glass partitions are highly flexible and provide either privacy or
openness or both depending on the need. They also make the office environment much
more appealing for both staff and visitors by creating a stylish, sleek and professional look.
They are also cost effective and low maintenance.

In residences , glass partitions offers modern, contemporary and luxurious look.

They increase the volume of spaces and creates spaciousness. They are used to divide a
room without reducing its size or flow of natural light. Shared areas may enjoy proximity to
windows while bedrooms, kitchens and even bathrooms sit behind glass walls, private and
separate yet united by sunlight and view.

Thus, the use of glass partitions in interiors of offices and residences are best choice as
they provide a lot benefits as compared to timber partitions. So, the use of glass partitions
should be duly encouraged by the new designers and architects in India.
