1 SCOPE
This specification details the design requirements for all components of shaft conveyance
suspension gear.
This specification applies to, but is not necessarily limited to, the following items:
• Safety detaching hooks
• Rope sockets
• Swivels (excluding bearings)
• Drawbars
• Kingbars
• Camplates
• Wire rope cappels
• Chase blocks
• Link plates and H-links
• Pins and nuts
• Dead eyes
• Kibble lugs
• Shackles
• Slinging lugs (fitted to the top transom of skips and cages)
• Slinging hooks (fitted to the bottom transom of skips and cages).
3 DEFINITIONS
TYPE TEST : A test measuring the ultimate load capacity of a particular size of
component or assembly, within a particular type of design.
4 REQUIREMENTS
4.1 GENERAL
Shaft conveyance suspension gear shall comply with the requirements of The South African
Minerals Act and Regulations.
4.2 MATERIAL
All components with the exception of those specified below shall be manufactured from steel
which complies with the requirements of BS 2772 Part 2.
4.2.1 Rope Cappel Wedges: shall be manufactured from steel that complies with the requirements
of SANS 1431 grade 300 or 350 WA in the normalised condition.
4.2.2 Lowering shackles: shall be manufactured from steel that complies with the requirements of
BS 970 grade 150M19.
4.2.3 Lowering shackle pins: shall be manufactured from steel to BS 970 Part 1 grade 826M40.
4.2.4 Detaching hook components not transmitting load, such as side plates, spacer pins
and nuts, split cotter pins and rivets: shall be manufactured from steel to SANS 1431
grade 300 or 350 WA or BS 970 grade 070M20.
4.2.5 Dead eyes: shall be manufactured from steel plate SANS 1431 grade 300 or 350 WC, unless
otherwise specified by the engineer.
4.2.6 Slinging lugs and hooks: shall be manufactured from steel plate SANS 1431 grade 300 or
350 WC, unless otherwise specified by the engineer.
4.2.7 Doubling down link plates, chase blocks and link pins: shall be manufactured from
steel plate SANS 1431 grade 300 or 350 WC, unless otherwise specified by the engineer.
4.2.8 Spectacle plates: shall be manufactured from steel plate SANS 1431 grade 300 or 350 WC.
4.3 DESIGN
Components shall be designed in accordance with the Design Guide for Cage Suspension
Gear published by the British National Coal Board (NCB) (now defunct), except as otherwise
noted below.
4.3.1 Loads: The suspended static load shall be the sum of the self weights of the payload, the
empty conveyance, tail ropes and attachments if any, the guide and roller attachments, and
suspension gear, plus any other furnishings. For existing installations the Winder Permit shall
be referenced to verify the conveyance mass and permitted payloads.
4.3.2 Rated Load Capacity: The rated load capacity of any component is the load determined as
above or a higher value complying with 4.3.3. The rated capacity of the detaching hook may
be used for the rated load provided this is greater than or equal to the load determined as
above.
4.3.3 Safety and fatigue reserve factors: The static safety factor on strength of suspension gear,
based on the rated static load carrying capacity, shall be at least 10, in line with the NCB
requirements. The fatigue reserve factor for infinite fatigue life shall be at least 1,3 calculated
using the method in the NCB. Bearing pressure on pins shall be less than 42 MPa.
The safety factor for rope glands and lowering shackles shall be 6:1 based on the rated static
load carrying capacity.
4.3.4 Prohibited design features: The following design features shall not be used.
• Threads shall not be used to transmit the suspended load (e.g. threaded King bars are
not approved).
• Link pins shall not be drilled other than for cotter pins to secure the nut.
• Welding shall not be used.
4.3.5 Pin and hole sizes: Tolerances on pin diameters shall be h9. Holes for link pins shall be 0.5
mm larger than the pin nominal size with tolerances to D10.
4.3.6 Pins: Nuts shall be used for securing of link pins and shall be locked by means of split cotter
pins.
4.3.7 Drawings and design calculations: These shall be submitted to the Engineer for approval
prior to issue of the drawings for manufacture.
4.3.8 Approval of Drawings and Calculations: All conveyance suspension gear drawings and
calculations shall be reviewed and approved by a registered Professional Engineer, to comply
with the requirements of the MA Regulations 16.16.
4.3.9 Proof load test: In order to physically verify that the design of components or assemblies is
serviceable, all newly manufactured and refurbished assembled suspension gear and single
items, with the exception of deadeyes and conveyance installation slinging lugs, shall be
subjected to a proof load equal to 2.5 times the maximum static load. (See Clause 2.1). No
permanent distortion should be evident after the test. Test certificates are required.
AA_SPEC_28100500.DOC APPROVED 12 February 2008 Page 5 of 7
4.3.10 Type test (Detaching Hooks only): In order to physically verify that the design safety factor
of 10 used in the design process to size components or assemblies is actually achieved, a
load test on a selected size within the range of each type of equipment shall be carried out.
The component or assembly shall be statically loaded in the manner that it would be loaded
in practice. The load shall be recorded and increased slowly until failure of the test item
causes the load to be released.
The following types of Detaching Hooks have been type tested in accordance with this
specification:
• Stephen Humble
• King
• Reliance Barker Davies
• Bellambie Rocket
• Ormrod
Unless otherwise specified the latest issue of the following documents shall be deemed to form part of
